USS Miami retired

USS Miami

Andy sends us a link to the story of the retirement ceremony for the submarine, USS Miami upon which Casey James Fury set some rags on fire on a bunk, back in 2012, so that he could get out of work early. The fire went on to do $3/4 billion damage to the vessel. The Navy decided to scrap the Los Angeles-class submarine instead of repairing it. From Associated Press;

Rear Adm. Ken Perry, commander of the submarine Group Two in Groton, Conn., where the sub was based, acknowledged the disappointment over its premature retirement but told the crowd they were there to celebrate Miami and its crew members for nearly 24 years of service.

“This is a tribute,” he said. “This is a celebration of the ship’s performance and the superb contributions to the nation’s defense and this is how we’re going to treat it. So I expect to see some smiles out there.”

Perry praised the ship’s performance over more than a dozen deployments that included clandestine undersea warfare missions and back-to-back deployments in which it fired cruise missiles in Iraq and in Serbia, earning the nickname “Big Gun.”

According to the article, the sub will be cut up for scrap.

Please tell me the lazy-ass turd responsible is being held liable for the cost. You break it, you bought it, right?

Andy

he was ordered to pay $40o million in restitution, but that’s going to be hard to do seeing as how he’s doing 17 yrs in a federal prison. http://valorguardians.com/blog/?p=34582

Pinto Nag

Take it out of his hide — literally. Take a pint of blood every six weeks for the next 17 years, while he’s in prison. At least we’ll recover something of value from the otherwise worthless t*rd.

Pinto Nag I was going to add something but you said it better. Here-Here! I hope he is getting butt plugged every day in prison.

Sad … Just said.

I have served on 3 ships. I know exactly where those ships are today. A Sailor becomes part of a ship and the ship apart of the Sailor … For life.

For the current and former crew … Sorry about the loos of this great peace-keeper.

And for the dirt bag who destroyed her … I hope you become a pass-a-round in prison!

He already is. Frankly, 20 years ain’t enough for what he did.

And seriously, I’d love to know how the government thought they’d ever get $400 million in restitution from him. Maybe if he hits the Powerball–TWICE.

Out of the two submarines and two tenders I served on, exactly one is still in commission–and it’s 30 years old and scheduled for decomm in 2016-17 timeframe.

Christ, I’m getting old.

I hear ya Sparky. My two boats are long gone. About the only redeeming thing is that the sail from the Tautog(SSN639) is down in Galveston Tx. I plan on visiting her one of these days. Spent a lot of time in that sail with the #*$^# floating wire, either rolling it out or in (when it wasn’t jammed). Standing on that ladder hanging on with one hand, pounding on the reel while we swayed back and forth at scope depth is something you never forget. lol

If it gives you any idea how long I’ve been around, I just missed the whole fiasco with the USS Swordfish almost being the third nuclear boat to go down.

And Tautog was still in Pearl when I was on Buffy. Still had that bent sail, too. (smile)
