Columbia, Maryland Mall shooting
Yesterday we wrote briefly about the Mall in Columbia shooting, and now the information about it is coming out in drips and drabs. The shooter’s name and his motives haven’t been released yet, but Fox News says that one of the two victims, 21-year-old Brianna Benlolo has connections to the military. Fox broadcast news says that the shooter used a shotgun, Joe Biden’s choice.
The Washington Times reports that five others were injured besides the two who were murdered, four were released from the hospital, while one remains for treatment of a foot wound. The Times also says that the shooter reportedly had a “large amount” of ammunition. Fox News says that he also had “two crude devices that appeared to be attempts at improvised explosives” which were disabled.
From the Washington Post;
Whatever the reason, the echoing shots provoked terror for those in the mall, igniting fears of yet another mass shooting in a public place that, until now, they considered safe.
They wouldn’t consider it safe if the read Tom Clancy, or watched the news. Unless of course, they believed their governor, Martin O’Malley, when he told Maryland residents that they were safe now because of the gun control legislation he rammed down their throats last year.
Category: Crime
Yeah, those new laws that O’Malley rammed through the
Supreme Soviet of the People’s Republic of MarylandMaryland legislature banning assault weapons and large-capacity magazines REALLY worked great in this case, didn’t they?Sheesh.
But the mall had a sign posted at the entrance that firearms were prohibited. Liberals believe signs solve all problems.
Stand by.
“See? it’s not just evil assault weapons, it’s large caliber killer shotguns, too! No none needs large caliber killer shotguns!”
Ted Kennedy has killed more people than my Mossy 500 12 gauge, but the aniti’s will dance in the blood of the innocents to further their agenda.
Press Conference at 0930.
@3 Ted Kennedy’s car has killed more people than all but one of weapons in my arsenal combined (exception being Grandpa’s souvenir rifle from Korea). Of course I could make the same comparison to business deals with Hillary Clinton…
Geez, the mindset on the libbyleft side of the fence is like watching some Betty Crocker housewife from the 1950s saying ‘Everything is fine. Everything is just fine.’ Meanwhile she’s got a piece of steak on that spot where her ‘just fine’ asshole 3-martini hubby whacked her when she argued with him.
Is that really the mindless, braindead state those idiots want to live in? Reality is a harsh mistress, but in all seriousness, those people are downright scarey.
The shooter was ID’d as 21 year old Darion Marcus Aquilar. “(Chief of Police) McMahon said he didn’t know if Aguilar had a criminal record.” Well, I’m gonna throw the BS flag on that comment, if the police identified him and released his name, they have his DOB, otherwise why release a name? They’d run the chance of releasing the name of someone who wasn’t there. With that, they would have run an NCIS background check, and would know if he had a record.
@7. Agreed EXCEPT that Maryland is a safehaven for illegals and the PD may have to go through the State Dept to request his Mexican rap sheet or something.
“Maryland Judiciary Case Search” website came up blank when I entered his name.
@9: Maybe he wasn’t a resident of Maryland?
@#9. NCIS would return his criminal record from anywhere in the U.S., not just Maryland. If it’s up to date, which is a real problem with NCIS.
The Baltimore Sun is now saying the shooter was 19 and living in College Park. That’s the home of the University of MD, by the way. Anyhow, at 19, his record, if any, as a juvenile would be sealed up tight, unless he had been waived to adult court. Shotguns are not regulated firearms under current MD law so the 21-year-old age minimum requirement does not apply. I would imagine that law makers will be running to MD’s Legislative Reference section tomorrow to draft bills prohibiting the sale or possession of shotguns to anyone under 21.
I’m somewhat amused that the five non-fatal injuries were from people scrambling to flee rather than from actual gunshot wounds.
ConcernedCitizen: accounts I’ve read indicate that one of the five was hit by what the news reports inaccurately referred to as a “bullet” (in reality, a shotgun pellet or buckshot) in the foot. The other 4 were indeed injured trying to flee.
Those reports could be wrong, but they’ve been consistent since mid-afternoon yesterday.
In #’s 7 & 11, that should have been NCIC, not NCIS. I can only plead not enough coffee yet today.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with Columbia, MD, it was a community designed and built by a fellow named Rouse for the express purpose of mixing races, ethnicities, and folks from all economic strata. It was to be liberal nirvana, with religious services, for instance, held for all faiths in the same ‘community center.’ Everything in Columbia is low key (except during soccer season) and heavily regulated. It is roughly smack dab between Baltimore and DC. I would guess that there are very few gun owners in Columbia, of the legal variety, anyway. It’s just not proper.
All of the sheep were thankful for the magical unicorn force field that those Gun Free Zone signs warned everyone about. However, they didn’t realize that those magical unicorn force fields only effect the sheepdogs. Wolves are immune from the magical unicorn force fields.
Just to clarify Brianna’s military connection.
Brianna is/was the daughter of a Ret USAF NCO. He retired out of my Squadron. But we take care of our own so, we are doing what we can.

@16. Few corrections from someone who lives in Columbia. It actually is a pretty interesting social engineering experiment and a lot of thought went into its creation. The ‘liberal nirvana’ moniker you give it is a bit of hyperbole – the intent was to build a community that didn’t favor one group over another, whether by race, religion or income level. Sounds good, but there are sometimes downsides – nice homes in close proximity to high rise lower income properties is the first that comes to mind. Not sure where you came up with the idea that we are “heavily regulated” – its no worse than any other community with a HOA. You can take this as fact because I build them. As far as the community center/religion comment, you can peddle your fairy tales anywhere as far as I’m concerned. But I digress.
To the last part of your comment, I am aware of a fair amount of very legal and very enthusiastic firearms owners in Columbia. I’ll grant you we aren’t the majority, but I would put it at a respectable percentage just from what I know about the people who live in my little corner of the neighborhood. You might be surprised.
@19. You object to my labeling Rouse’s social-engineering desoign liberal nirvana and then you allow that “the intent was to build a community that didn’t favor one group over another, whether by race, religion or income level.” That IS liberal nirvana. As for the heavy regulation being no worse than an HOA, I suppose you could be right but HOAs are usually confined to a particular neighborhood, not a whole damn city. And what are you talking about with respect to the “fairy tales” I told regarding the nondenominational faith/community center? It is precisely as I described it–or are you pretending knowledge of Columbia that you don’t possess?
“Columbia’s worship facilities are located in three Interfaith Centers. Within these Interfaith Centers are 16 worship communities, including Catholic, Jewish and Protestant.” That’s from the Columbia Association itself. I recall attending Mass in one of those one-size-fits-all places once. The floors were slanted downward and there were no kneelers. Consequently, Catholics were effectively prevented from kneeling during the Consecration and Communion. (If you knelt on the floor, you risked face planting.) Like I said, I attended Mass there ONCE.
