Singlaub=Ayers? I don’t think so.

| October 7, 2008

I picked up the story over at Sith by Sithwest that the Democrats are trying to attack McCain by attaching him to General John Singlaub’s U.S. Council for World Freedom. MSNBC characterizes the organization thusly;

McCain’s ties are facing renewed scrutiny after his campaign criticized Barack Obama for his link to a former radical who engaged in violent acts 40 years ago.

The U.S. Council for World Freedom was part of an international organization linked to former Nazi collaborators and ultra-right-wing death squads in Central America. The group was dedicated to stamping out communism around the globe.

Who writes their material? Who are these “Nazi collaborators” they’re talking about?

The Council for World Freedom’s big crime in the 80’s was providing humanitarian support to right-wing Latin American groups, although MSNBC tries to make it sound more nefarious by throwing in sentences about arms shipments that are unrelated to the U.S. Council for World Freedom;

Covert arms shipments to the rebels called Contras, financed in part by secret arms sales to Iran, became known as the Iran-Contra affair. They proved to be the undoing of Singlaub’s council.

In 1987, the Internal Revenue Service withdrew the tax-exempt status of Singlaub’s group because of its activities on behalf of the Contras.

Politico writes that Paul Begala, former clintonista and media hatchetman, was the person who took it upon himself to leak the story about McCain;

Begala told Politico that he raised McCain’s connection to the U.S. Council because he wanted to prove that “it’s really unwise for the McCain campaign to begin a campaign of guilt by association. And I was trying to demonstrate the way I think that Democrats ought to run their campaign. I could have just gone on and said ‘Democrats need to counterattack.’ Instead, I thought: why don’t I just do it?”

The only people who will be outraged that McCain belonged to this group which had no committed no provable crime are the commie-loving Leftists. McCain claims he resigned from the organization in 1984, but because the 87-year-old Singlaub (who admits he never met McCain) claims to not remember if McCain resigned in 1984, MSNBC figures McCain is lying.

As Jason points out, SInglaub is a real American hero who parachuted behind enemy lines and freed 400 US prisoners off the coast of China. Bill Ayers is a slimy POS who bombed his own country and still wishes he’d bombed more.

The Council for World Freedom wanted to end communism and free people, the Weather Underground wanted to kill their parents. Maybe to the commie-loving Left like Paul Begala there’s some sort of equal comparison. Maybe if they want to find out what the Council for World Freedom really did in Latin America, they should talk to someone who knows, instead of relying on tired Leftist dogma.

Thanks for the link John.

To even draw that sort of comparison if far more telling of the character of Obama’s supporters than of McCain’s.

Singlaub also received a medal for piloting a C-130 on a mission to drop troops where the overwing compartment opened and a life raft wrapped itself around the tail.

That part about Nazis is in the AP story on the MSNBC website.

So, I admire General Singlaub even mroe.
Back in those days I contributed funds for the Contras. And when the Demoncrat congress went after Colonel North I wrote a letter to Senator In-the-way, telling him that I had done my best to violate the Boland Ammendment, and demanded that they persecute me, and others like me, alongside Ollie North. I received only a snarky reply form a secretary.

During my first hitch in the Army (76-79) I remember when Jimmeh (abject failure) Carter had General Singlaub fired for daring to confront him on his insane proposed withdrawal of US troops from South Korea. We all thought Carter was nuts. It was just a preview of comming attractions.
