Glen Coffee from the NFL to Fryar Drop Zone
Preston and Andy sent us links to the story of Glen Coffee, the former 49ers running back for whom the NFL didn’t give him thrills – so he joined the Army. He is slated to graduate from the Army’s Basic Airborne Course today on his way to Fort Bragg and Special Forces training;
“I’ve always considered myself a warrior, somebody who would fight for what he believed in,” Coffee told AL.com. “It hit me like, ‘What do you think the military does and what do you think the military is full of? Warriors. All of a sudden, I had this respect for the military and I just realized that there is no America without the men and women who serve this country.
“I figured that if I’m able, the Lord’s blessed me with an able body while I’m young, to get out there and get dirty.”
Welcome and good luck, Glen.

Sent this to my son who is at Bragg now.
Good for Glen Coffee!
So refreshing to have an athlete realize what is really important… what makes it important… and then go about BEING important. Glen… you are a TRUE role-model.
“Too easy…” 🙂
Way to go, Glen Coffee. Since I am not a big NFL fan, I hadn’t heard of the name. Let’s make contact with him and get him on here as a commenter. TAH always needs some young Warrior blood.
Good luck for SFAS!
What a fucking patriot!
Roll tide roll. Best of luck Glen.
Airborne!! Good luck and thanks for stepping up to the plate to serve!!
RIGHT ON, Glenn!
i hope he makes the cut. good inspiration right there
And the Black Hat is a ball buster, I predict. Hooah & Airborne to him also.
@6.
War Eagle!
But I have to give it up for Glenn.
Way to go.
Good for him. He’s a good example of his generation.
Good for him. He’s a good example for his generation to follow.
Pro Football Reference gives his place of birth as Eglin AFB, so I wonder if he comes from a military family.
Thanks for your service, Glen. Please always remember that there are a lot of people you’ve never met wanting nothing but your safety and success.
I’m with GT on the whole War Eagle/Roll Tide thing. My daughter is an Auburn grad, but she married a Bama grad….so, in this ONE case,
Roll Tide.
Sounds like he just might have the right stuff. And a class act to boot.
Carry on, Glen!
Here’s the other thing about this-NFL players are eligible for a pension after 3 years. From what I can tell he gave up a four year contract when he retired, so he probably would not have had any trouble making it to the required three year mark (barring injury).
He says his heart was not in it, which is fair enough, but the point I am trying to make is that he gave up both short term and longer term financial benefit in order to pursue this, so this is no small sacrifice on his part.
good luck brother
Hooah!!!
American Badass.
Though he did eff me in my FF team when Gore went down and I used the #2 waiver spot to pick up Coffee b/c I thought he would go off.
Turned out, Gore only missed 1 game, Coffee was awful (because I guess the heart wasn’t in it) and my team got its face kicked in.
That’s what I get for being a fantasy football LOOOSAH
I wonder if he’ll get a personal call from the Obamas they way the gay basketball player did.
ROLL TIDE!!!!!!!
Good on ya, Mr. Coffee, and welcome to a truly exclusive club of veterans.
Puttin’ his knees to the breeze. Good for him. AATW!
Good luck…especially on the swim test. One of many avenues that can lead to the “Duffel Bag Drag to Division.”
Best of luck to Glenn.
Thank you Glenn.
NOW PUT YOUR F**KING RIGHT HAND BACK OVER THAT RIPCORD GRIP BEFORE I HAVE YOU PUSHING LAWSON ARMY AIRFIELD INTO ALABAMA!
🙂
The Black Hat is Bravo Co’s 1SG, and a GREAT guy. Really funny, tough as nails, entirely focused on getting soldiers proficient at exiting an aircraft and landing safely. And with a first name starting with C, I’m guessing he’s from first platoon, and maybe was lucky enough to train under SSG Fisher…cannot say enough awesome things about SSG Fisher…best trainer I’ve had my entire Army career.
I think this would be the most fun use of the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Act ever. Play pro football, join Army, then the 49ers may have to bring him back on the team.
There is a great role model for our yutes to follow. Joe
@22, nor will Obama make a point of saying he looks like his son….
Way to go, refreshing to see a young man doing something unselfish and for his country with no guarantee he is going to make it through.
@30 “What did you say? Did you say yutes?”
He’s gonna have a hard time being the grey man at McCall lol
[…] Ain’t Hell has a bunch of great posts up today but I especially like this one by Jonn called “Glen Coffee from the NFL to Fryar Drop Zone.” It’s […]
Yeah, well count me out for giving this guy special thanks. He gets the same nod of appreciation that every other enlistee gets. No more, no less. I will say this, though. He played one year with Frisco and did well. There was nothing wrong with his game. But he told Mike Singletary that god wanted him to take a different path. It’s not every guy who could turn down potential BIG BUX for a rifle and boots.
The lower case g in God was unintended. Typo.
At #31 , Cousin Vinny was on last night. Yes I said YUTES.The term youths is reserved by me for ones that do not go gangas style. Joe
Keep pushing Glen! Just freakin awesome – a true Patriot. Wish ya much success!
I am so proud of this young man. To give up all he had to serve his country says volumes about his character and sense of patriotism. God bless and keep him safe.
That sack strapped to the front of him is *NOT a parachute, It’s military issued training athletic supporter to assist him in shoring up his giant balls.
/good on you son. I sincerely hope someone sends you this blog link and you get to read it. KUDOS
