Syria threatens Israel with declaration of war

| May 6, 2013

The Washington Post reports that Syria has threatened Israel with a declaration of war after Israel struck a military and a research facility ostensibly to prevent missiles from falling into the hands of Hezbollah;

The airstrikes targeted Fateh-110 missiles, which have precision guidance systems and may have been destined for the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, the official said.

Although it was unclear whether Assad’s government would pursue direct military retaliation, the Syrian Foreign Ministry said the attack proved that Israel is collaborating with Syrian rebels.

“The Israeli attack on military sites in Syria is proof that there is communication between Israel and the terrorist groups who take their orders from al-Qaeda,” the ministry said in a statement broadcast on state television. The government uses the blanket term “terrorists” to refer to its opponents, who range from secular activists to militants linked to al-Qaeda.

I think at this point that the Assad regime can ill-afford opening another front in their war to survive.

Reuters reports that Iran is calling for a regional response to Israel’s airstrikes on Syria;

Tehran on Sunday denied the attack was aimed at “its missiles destined for Hezbollah resistance fighters in Lebanon,” according to the Islamic state’s English-language Press TV.

Iran has supported its ally Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in his efforts to suppress a rebellion that has raged for more than two years and which Tehran and Damascus say is being waged by Western-backed “terrorists”.

Well, Iran has been poking the Iraeli bear long enough that they should figure they might be the next target of the Israeli air force. They should sit down and sit up.

“They should sit down and sit up.”

Next, they should roll over and beg the IAF not to bomb them, now that there’s a HUGE hole in their Forward Air-Defense Screen, i.e. Syria…….

I am guessing Assad the younger is forgetting what happened to the Syrian Army the last time they got into a tussle with the IDF.

Spoiler alert: It did not go well……

Does this mean I have to cancel my planned archaeological expedition to the 15,000 year-old tower foundations in southwestern Syria?

Durn! I just got a deal on goat and camel rental, too.

So the Israelis took out several facilities where weapons were being developed and built — that one explosion was MASSIVE! even at a distance — and cranked up Iron Dome. Iran is complaining about it all, and some of the Syrian stuff that got ‘blowed up’ was going to be shipped to Hezbollah’s place in Lebanon, if I understand it correctly.

Anyone want to speculate on what happens next?

Nik

How DARE you blow up those weapons we were quite possibly going to use against you? You keep blowing up our weapons and this might mean war.

Kasia

It’s really odd they threat with a new war as they haven’t even came to terms with themselves in Syria.

Jim

So preemptive strikes against another country are legal? And Syria could not “delare War” on Isreal. At least they are open and honest about it. But I love(?) it that WE are standing up for isreal, attacking another country, that the that the CIA has instigated warefare in. What is it about the CIA, war, and the arabian penusela, are we standing in place of the british…Or are we stil vassel to them?

NHSparky

Jim, first point, spell-checker is your friend. Second point, yes, preemptive strikes ARE legal if the target of the strike would have been used against your country, particularly civilian targets, which Hezbollah is notorious for targeting.

Syria could in fact declare war if they wanted, but as has been noted, just because you CAN do something, doesn’t mean you SHOULD. Doing so would pretty much assure Assad’s lifespan would grow considerably shorter.

And as far as your CIA drivel, your tinfoil is slipping, sonny.

And further, Syria has used them against Isreal in recent history. I remember those news stories recently showing off the ability of the Iron Dome defense. What? Those don’t count?

Jim you just dont get it do you?

Last I checked, Syria declared war against Israel in 1948. Syria’s stated desire is to push the Jews into the sea. Although there has been relative quiet since 1973 on that front, Syria remains at war with Israel and now engages in a proxy war by working with Iran, Hezbollah, and until recently housed Hamas, another group chartered with the goal of murdering the entire Jewish population. So technically, this is just a flare-up in a technical war.

USMCE8Ret

I agree with JAGC, however, I doubt Syria and Iran have the balls to really do anything in response.

Ex-PH2

@11, I agree. I think Iran, especially, will shake its fists and complain a lot.

I find it interesting that Obama and the joint Chiefs
have been saying that Syria have a good air defence system,
yet the IRF had no trouble going in twice.

Heard tale Pelosi is auctioning off her Syrian hijab, autographed by Assad himself.
