Marine in Mexico to be released today
I guess all of the talk about shutting down US tourism to Mexico and the various sanctions Americans have been planning resonated with the Mexican judge who decided that Jon Hammar should be released from his Mexican cell today says Fox;
Olivia Hammar said the judge hearing Hammar’s case issued a ruling in his favor and that her son is to be released at a time on Friday yet to be announced. No more details were available. Hammar, 27, who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, has been stuck in a notorious, drug cartel-controlled prison just 15 miles south of the U.S. border since Aug. 13, after he crossed into Mexico and declared an antique shotgun to Mexican customs officials.
News of his pending release came just a day after a letter surfaced from Mexico’s ambassador to the U.S. that insisted Hammar’s case would go to trial.
He probably shouldn’t have tried to get the gun into Mexico, but they shouldn’t have arrested him for being honest with the Mexicans and filling out their paperwork. We still should convince Western Union to shut their terminals down for a few days, though, anyway. After Hammar gets home.

I like Mexico. It’s the Mexicans I can do without. Did you know that the US is to blame for their murder by gun problem? Fast and Furious aside, they bl;ame us BECAUSE they have strict anti-gun laws. If that’s not a hoot, I don’t know what is. Just goes to show you that stoopid is an exportable product. Anyway, good for Hammar and his family.

IMO, the Mexican government still embraces the former president’s (Calderon’s) sentiments about the U.S., (as you may recall, cited about Arizona’s posture on illegal immigration: “….to intolerance, hate, discrimination and abuse in law enforcement.” The incumbent president, (Nieto), hasn’t done much to reach across the border to improve the relationship between the two countries – although he has plenty of problems to deal with, already – I guess.
They have the most corrupt government in the world. There isn’t a Mexican policeman not on the take. The drug lords rule the roost. Were it not for drugs the wealth of Mexico would be somewhere bewteen $5 and $7–American. I just wish we could push back the border about 50 miles, mine it, and make it a free-fire zone. No DMZ crap.

They are a third world nation masquerading as a civilized society. The government squeezes the proletariat from the top while the drug cartels squeeze from the bottom. I suppose the relentless coverage of Cpl Hammar’s plight by Bill O’ Reilly and FNC was proving to be unbearably embarrasing to WH/State Dept…another American abandoned. OK team, lets get off our duffs, something needs to be done to squelch the negativity from FNC…Yeah ,lets arm twist Mehico gov’t and threaten to cut off the $300M in economic aid if Hammar isn’t released in time for X-mas
Mehico probably also wised up and realized this controversy was scaring away tourists…same old same old corrupt Mehico.

The biggest missed opportunity ever happened when we chose not to annex Mexico after the Mexican-American War. We’d have a LOT smaller border to defend, plus a lot more great beaches.
Yat Yas 1833: no argument from me that the kid was foolish, amigo. You are correct, as anyone with half a brain who’s lived near the Mexican border knows. Mexico’s gun laws are absolutely Draconian; the police (and other) corruption there is legendary.
The kid was hugely naive, and consequently ended up getting hammered. He’s frankly lucky that his case made the news, or he might never have been released while still breathing.

Another slap in the face for veterans from the Obama administration. He sat in jail unjustly for months only until the people that truly cared for him stopped p-footing around relying on an administration that thinks he’s America’s #1 enemy. God damn war hero abandoned for months by his country. Makes me so angry as a marine, a citizens, and a decent human being.

It is complete and utter bullshit to lay one shred of blame on Hammar. He asked an official on this side if he could take the gun. Said official gave him paperwork. Hammar did NOTHING wrong. 98% of the blame rests squarely on the pieces of shit who comprise Mexican law enforcement and a corrupt judicial system. The other 2% can be divided between the misinformed Borden officials and Obama for not sending SEALs. No difference between Pakistani sovereignty and Mexican sovereignty.

Maggie: two issues with what you say above.
First, the US officials who allegedly told Hammar “that’s OK” and gave him the paperwork were not then and are not today Mexican government officials authorized to interpret Mexican law. Their advice was merely that – friendly advice.
What’s allowable and what’s not at international borders is often a matter of interpretation, and interpretation often varies depending on which side of the border you’re located. The nation’s officials where you are physically located do the interpreting, and US officials interpretation of Mexican law didn’t matter once Hammar crossed the border. Hammar found that out the hard way.
Second, the young man simply didn’t do his homework. If he had, he’d have known he was taking one helluva risk. He should have checked with Mexican authorities, then checked again – then checked yet again.
I see from your website address above you’re probably from the Boston area. I’d guess you’ve probably never have lived near the US-MX border. I have. It’s common knowledge in parts of the US near Mexico that you do NOT want to even THINK about taking a gun to Mexico; ditto ammo. That’s the quickest way in the world to end up rotting in a Mexican jail.
Mexico’s gun laws make Chicago’s or DC’s look liberal. They have no sense of humor about anything relating to guns and ammunition. When it comes to gun law violations, they don’t “cut breaks”. And the legendary corruption you hear about regarding Mexican law enforcement is generally the truth; get caught violating their laws, and you will get shaken down bigtime – and then probably still end up rotting in a Mexican jail.
Is that the way things should be? No. But it’s reality. And Hammar didn’t allow for that.
