Quantico’s Iwo Jima Memorial defaced
Tuesday night, some vandals took it upon themselves to deface the Iwo Jima Memorial at Quantico Marine Base by painting a pink stripe around it. Of course, I’d blame juvenile delinquents, but the juveniles might be those wretched hags of Code Pink – you know, the pink stripe. Not that they’re not juveniles, but they are rather long in the tooth.
Military officials say the vandalism, a bright pink paint line around about half of the memorial’s base, happened Tuesday evening. Military police along with Prince William County police searched the area but did not find any suspects.
Of course, the Code Pinkers are upset that their latest cause, Breanna Manning, was reportedly abused while he was a prisoner at Quantico, and his treatment has been in the news this week, so it stands to reason that little cretins would do something like this and then giggle about their “action”.

Naturally the men immortalized in that memorial are to blame for the “mistreatment” of a homosexual press whore.
It’s so difficult to articulate my actual reaction to this. Aaaaaarrrrgahaaahhhhgrrrr!!!!! Is about as close as I can get.
If/when the perps are located and convicted – I propose they be sent to Quantico for incarceration.
Said incarceration to be served in stocks, located on the main parade field on base.

There is a world of difference between a good ole ass whoppin’ and abuse! We were a much more civil society when ass whoppin’s followed by public shame took care of these situations.

Six months doing janitorial duty, plus two years standing guard over any/all military memorials 24 hrs a day, no time off to pee, no allowance for bad weather, and no umbrellas or warm socks and gloves.
Just add another reason to my list of why this country is no longer worth fighting for.

am no Brother Jarhead, my cousins all are. But this pisses me off like no other. The desire to put a .17 HMR in each of the moving joints for the perps comes to mind.

No this country is no longer worth fighting for. Period. I wasted 32 years of my life in uniform and what do I have to show for it? My personal property is stolen on a monthly basis, the police dept has no interest in catching the thugs who did it, the PARASITE class thinks everything I own is theirs, so please tell me just exactly what is worth fighting for anymore? All I want is to be left alone in my retirement, but I don’t even get that anymore.
Dragoon, you spent 32 years in uniform and it was a waste because you we’re robbed? Move to neverland then, where robbery doesn’t exist. People steal everywhere on this planet. Your inability to protect your property from some dirtbag has nothing to do with your geographic location. The spray paint on that memorial will be cleaned off, but the stain your attitude is leaving on your life is most likely permanent.
When was this country “worth it,” in your opinion? Was there a time when larceny was a campfire story we scared kids with? Your self-pity in this forum is inappropriate.
This bugs me. My great-uncle, Harry, was my primary military influence in my life, and he was a Marine that fought at Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima. He came home with the Purple Heart and lived a life of humility and productivity.
This country is worth fighting, especially when it’s clear a selfish sense of entitlement comes in a variety of forms.

i too thought this country was not worth fighting for. I always fought for myself. But fate, freind and a army recruiter interviened. I still doubted my alligeance untill I walked into the Alamo. The past made me see this is were i need to be. I was ready to throw my history, my past, my citizenship- and join the leigon. I know how you feel, but we fight for HER and our brothers. Is this memorial actually on Quantico, or it is at the intersection of Route 1 (Jeff Davis Highway) and the road into the base, in Triangle?
On base: juvenile dependents of Marines getting in an eff-you at his/her/their Marine parent.
Off base: someone pissed off at a Marine – theft of boyfriend (hey, it is a new era), or girlfriend.
Code Pink would have taken pictures and had write-ups in several blogs and publications. They are about visibility.
@17, I agree. Talked about this earlier today with friends who are Marines. Another possibility, a disgruntled reject who didn’t make it through boot camp.
I understand Dragoon45’s disappointment at putting in a near-lifetime of service and then retiring and finding things aren’t what you had thought they would be.
But I knew if I stayed IN Chicago after I retired, I would see a rising crime rate and experience loss through theft, etc., so I moved ahead of retiring to a place less likely to support the criminal element and I’m better off. (No, NOT a 55++ community. Gag!) So while I sometimes have to pinch pennies because things like gas have nearly tripled since 2005, other things have made up for that. But since my time is my own now, all the things I never had time for while I was working are on my agenda now.
At the same time, while I didn’t spend a long career in uniform, I never have considered any of my time in the Navy a waste.

I can understand how Dragoon feels.
I spent the majority of my career as a cold warrior pushing back against the communists, only to have them make great strides in taking over our country from within.
Makes me think all those flight hours punching holes in the sky and deployments on subs and skimmers keeping tabs on the Russians was a big mistake.
It’s understandable, Dragoon. It hits we in the older set particularly hard because we know how it once was. And we also know that it is unlikely that we will live long enough to see the necessary corrections made.
But, no, our service was not a waste. We did what needed to be done because it was the right thing to do. Others have dropped the ball. That does not diminish our service at all.

I imagine that your situation is pretty bad for you to make such a statement. I really don’t think you mean those words. You’re just pissed off, disgusted, and looking at the USA through a very personalized lens. I’m not going to pull the Pollyanna act and talk about the freedoms we still enjoy because of your service and that of the millions of us who have served over the past 200+ years. I’ll say just this: Get the hell out of where you are. Unless you are on a heart-lung machine or some such thing, you can—and should—get out of your present situation and location. It’s a pain in the ass but if you want some peace and quiet in your retirement, you’ve got to do something about it. Turning your place into a fortress or expecting criminals to stop targeting you if they’ve had past success isn’t a good plan. You really do need to bug out.
I wish you well and hope your situation allows you to go where you can get some peace soon.
The country is worth fighting for, because the country is an ideal. It’s something to strive for, even when it falls short and disappointes (eg. Election 2012). The country is the concept of what’s best in all of us.
While the country is worth fighting for, some of the people in it most certainly are not.
