Obama Administration outsources US jobs to Brazil

| January 21, 2012

I wrote about this issue back in May about the contract competition between a US company, Hawker Beechcraft, against Brazilian-owned and operated Embraer. It seems that the contract has been awarded to Embraer;

So 1200 US jobs went to Brazil. Obama promised to create jobs, I guess we didn’t understand that he meant the jobs were for Brazilians. Lucky for us, this is an election year and we can fix it.

The first batch of the “new” black berets the Army bought were all “Made in China.” Once this was found out, the Army turned them to surplus and put in an order with an American company.
the 2 9mm pistols the US military uses are from foreign companies. Most of the fed law enforcement agencies use pistol made outside the US. For a long time, the M16 we were using was made by FN, the M249 and M240 are sold by FN.
The quesiton shouldn’t be why the military is buying foreign guns, but why can’t gun companies in the US make better guns and a good price?

Brazil? How much of Embraer does Soros own?
Let’s see, 15K to maybe 35 or 40K jobs for the pipeline, now another 1200? Yeah, this administration is doing it’s best to create jobs, anywhere but here.

He did it so he can stand up in front of the Obamabots and honestly say “I just created Brazillian jobs” and the crowd will nudge one another and whisper “hey… How many in a Brazilian?”

I did a point paper on this issue recently that I will send you on Monday Jonn. Soros has no interest in Embraer directly that I could find. Also, the planes will be built in Jacksonville Florida, not in Brazil.

The problem I have here is that sure, we want everything done here, and I get that. But, how can we argue that our troops should have the best possible equipment, and that it should be at the lowest possible cost, and then we jump the AF when they bid the contract, and find that the plane built by Embraer is the best? Now, we can only go off what the AF says, because the results haven’t been submitted yet, but they uncategorically stated that the EMB aircraft was superior to the HB one.

Good question. First Billions of taxpayer dollars to Petrobas and now this.

Beretverde

It’s a better aircraft, period!

#1 A)”the 2 9mm pistols the US military uses are from foreign companies.” That is true but I could have sworn that Beretta, an Italian company, manufactures there pistol stateside. B)”For a long time, the M16 we were using was made by FN, the M249 and M240 are sold by FN.” Umm, I don’t know about the M-16, Colt had the contract but I’m not sure how long the exclusivity of such a patent lasts. I thought the M-249 was a creation of FN. So it is only natural we would buy it from it’s creator. The M240 like the M60 has its origion in the WWII Wehrmacht MG34 & 42. I remember reading in fact, that the M60’s rate of fire was purposely slowed down compared to them because it was not believed that it could be well controlled and would just waste ammunition. I can’t remember who or what entities this involved but there was some kind of legal dispute about the M60 and M240 about ten years ago. The two weapons are pretty close and the assertion was a new machine gun was not needed, just updated kits for the M60. C)”The quesiton shouldn’t be why the military is buying foreign guns, but why can’t gun companies in the US make better guns and a good price?” Its not that I don’t think they can’t(see Beretta comment above), its just they can’t at a high rate of speed. A few years ago there was a political dispute about buying small arms ammunition from Israel because of Arab “sensitivities”. We turned to them because the US didn’t have the industrial base any longer to produce that many rounds that quickly. Which says something about us, since we never really had that problem in the modern era before. I guess Jewish rounds to Arabs are what silver bullets are to Werewolves. Jonn wrote “So 1200 US jobs went to Brazil. Obama promised to create jobs…” there were also those giant deep oil riggs that were moved there, with thousands of jobs lost, after he effectively shut now offshore oil… Read more »

If you are talking about the EMB 314 aka A-29 Super Tucano they are going to be manufactured in Jacksonville, FL. R&D is done in Sparks, NV. Proven platform that has been up and running since 2003.

Hawker Beechcraft is now at least partly owned by the UK…as in Hawker Hurricane. The T-6 used by the USAF now was not an American design.

American airframe design and manfacture is going the way of the Dodo because of litigation and merger/takeover that poliferates in the areospace industry. If you want a US designed and built aircraft for military service you can get a Boeing, Lockheed/Martin or Northrup-Grumman that’s about it.

The helicopter industry is in even worse shape. Bell is hanging on by a thread, which would leave Sikorsky and Boeing if they go down. Eurocopter is kicking all their asses in the civil marketplace right now.

You want low prices, you need competition…which we really don’t have anymore guns or airplances.

FlyingCowOfDoom

@10 and if you get an aircraft from on of the big 3 American makers you mentioned it’ll probably be 5-10 years late and billion plus dollars over budget.

Outlaw13

@11 True…but the various armed services, their changing requirements and the budget process do have a hand in that as well.

8: FN has the M16 contract. Colt lost that years ago. They don’t own the patent on the M16. Hell, they don’t even have control over the AR-15 or the M4. Hence all the civilian copies. IIRC, DOD owns all that intellectual property. All of those M16s, as well as the M249s and M240s are made in South Carolina at a US factory. Also a requirement for the contract. And you’re right about Beretta. Almost ALL of the Beretta pistols sold in the US are made in Maryland, including the civilian ones.

Anyway, the Beechcraft offering isn’t really an American aircraft either. It’s basically Swiss. Second, the Super Taco represents a lot less risk for such a small contract that’s mostly going to go to foreign end users anyway.

A)”FN has the M16 contract. Colt lost that years ago.” Okay. Colt got Stoner’s design from Armalite years before.

B)”They don’t own the patent on the M16. Hell, they don’t even have control over the AR-15 or the M4. Hence all the civilian copies. IIRC, DOD owns all that intellectual property.” Alright, I knew that the patent had expired for Colt, thus all the copies, I’m not an expert on firearms patents or production though. Didn’t know know about DOD property rights.

C)”All of those M16s, as well as the M249s and M240s are made in South Carolina at a US factory. Also a requirement for the contract. And you’re right about Beretta. Almost ALL of the Beretta pistols sold in the US are made in Maryland, including the civilian ones.” Thought so.

#13 Thanks for the info.

Man, remember when he gave that real moving speach about bringing jobs home when he wanted to pass that jobs bill? Looks like creating jobs in the U.S. is a good talking point when it benefits his agenda…

XBradTC

Everyone I’ve heard talk about the contract says the Beech didn’t do worth a damn.

Further, if buying 20-40 Super Tacos from Brazil helps seal the deal to sell some SuperHornets to Brazil, that will more than offset the cashflow.
