Rumor Doctor on Hollywood and the military

| November 3, 2011

Our buddy, Jeff Schogol, the Stars & Stripes Rumor Doctor got fed up like the rest of us with Hollywood not doing thier homework on military uniforms in the moveies they want us to watch, so he went looking for answers;

The pervasive urban legend I have heard is it is because it is against the law to impersonate military or police, but I have a hard time believing this,” the reader wrote in an email.

Actually, the Supreme Court has ruled on this matter. Originally, actors were allowed to wear military uniforms as long as they did not “discredit the armed force.”

Go read the rest.

IIRC, one of the Stargate SG-1 episodes had some scenes that were supposed to be at the USAF Academy. One scene was supposed to be an outside shot, but for some reason the director didn’t want the “cadets” to be wearing their covers. The Air Force nixed that, and said if it was outside, the cadets had to wear the proper headgear.

I like hearing about stuff like that.

if he had cathrine Bell’s number I’d LOVE to talk to him.

There are so many movies that are written in such a way that the military doesn’t come off looking food in the first place. to that there is not much you can do. Its a culture in hollywood, which will cause every soldier to shudder violently at the bass ackward Berets.

Well, my thoughts on Hollywood and not doing it right just got turned on their head, so much so I may ask Jonn to let me do a guest post. Actofvalor.com is well worth checking out. They showed an extended clip at Blog World (http://blogworldexpo.com) yesterday, and I arranged for JD Johannes to be the interviewer/moderator for that special showing. To say we were blown away is an understatement. Real operators, real gear, real tactics and situations — and real ammo used. There wasn’t a vet there that wasn’t rocked by it, and JD was even telling people that what they saw and heard was what he saw and heard out on missions with various SF units.

What I really love, is that this is going to make all the other typical crap done by Hollywood look even worse than it already does. FYI, the movie opens in February nationwide on 3,000 screens. Interestingly, they are saying that this is effectively a new genre of real action film — not documentary, as the plot is fictional; but, real operators are the leads and everything is based on the reality of SEAL life including the family stuff.
