The #1 song 45 years ago today

| April 8, 2011

I remember when it was #1 – I was ten. The staff at Camp Mackall played it on a loop over the loudspeaker every night until lights out.

I’ll be off the net this weekend, but I’ve been assured by the eleven other people who have posting privileges here that they’ll keep you entertained. Have a happy government shut down.

Interestingly, I was discussing Barry Sadler just Wednesday night, as he went on to write a series of books about “Casca Longinus” who in the books was the centurion who stabbed Jesus. He was cursed to remain a soldier until Christ returned, and the books detail how he fought in every battle from then to now. I particularly liked the one where he rode with Genghis Khan and the one in Vietnam.

Frankly Opinionated

Thanks for the reminder. Time flies……..

I think I still have the LP record of Sadler’s songs. I don’t have a record player anymore, however. Have a nice weekend, Jonn. I’m looking forward to a long weekend, and hopefully will not be declared “essential.”

509th Bob

Crap, I was deemed “essential.”

AW1 Tim

God I suddenly feel old. Sigh.

PintoNag

I grew up with that song, and I still turn in up when it comes on the radio (the “golden oldies” stations anymore, lol!)

NHSparky

If by “entertained” you mean hearing me bitch and whine about having to work 12’s until I drop, then yeah, I guess that’s entertaining.

And Tim, that’s because you ARE old…(runs and hides)

One of the things that inspired me to go into the service was this song. We all loved it in High School.

His “Casca” series is one of my favorites. It was sad he passed before completing them. (I think)

RIP SSGT Sadler.

Jacobite

Same here AC, this song played a part in my decision to join as well.

Sadler was shot in the head in Guatemala City sometime in the 1980s, he died about a year later in Tennessee.

AW1 Tim

Much love to you too, Sparky… 🙂

PintoNag

No, no, you guys have it all wrong!

You’re NOT old; you’re “distinguished.” Big difference! 😉

DaveO

I disagree with PN: they’re old as hell. You can smell the lavoris and liniment every time they type.

Of course, the theme song for my class was “Danger Zone.” It ought to have been “Click, Click, BOOM!”

PintoNag

For myself, I prefer Scope and Icy Hot.

And yes, DaveO, that squishy sound is what you just stepped in…

(I’m teasing you, of course… 🙂 )

PintoNag

…and the answer to the unasked question is “48.”

melony

Love this song! I remember it well…

Naked Patriot

Awesomeness! 🙂 We have this on our Ipods.

Think you young pups are dating yourselves here….*cough*
Heard Lilyea always stood loud n proud at “attenhuh”, hearing this song, LOL.

RIP SSGT Sadler!
Hooah!

Smorgasbord

I am listening to the song as I am writing this. The first time I heard the song was on a cassette tape while I was driving my semi down the highway. I cried that time and several times after that when I listened to it. Sometimes I still cry when I listen to it, especially the second verse. I’m glad I bought the whole album. There are other good songs on it.

Would somebody ask Merle Haggard to remake his “The Fightin’ Side of Me” song for today, or would someone else please do it? We need more of these songs.

I didn’t realize it until just now, but all of our wars have had patriotic songs until Iraq and Afghanistan. I ain’t surprised, since the entertainment industry is so much anti-American.
