Marine runs marathon in pro-mask
Yeah, I’ve been in a few marathons, and without a protective (gas mask for you civvies) mask was hard enough. Here’s the story of one Marine who ran 26 miles last weekend with his mask on;
…when Soles met Cpl. John Peck at Walter Reed Army Medical Center last month, the 33-year-old Marine had all the inspiration he needed for this year’s challenge.
Peck, 24, had lost his arms and legs to a roadside bomb in Afghanistan in May. But when he met with Soles, his attitude was buoyant, and Soles decided he’d run the 26.2-mile Marine Corps Marathon in his honor.
And he’d do it while wearing a gas mask. The difficulty, he said, served as a symbol of the suffering endured by Peck and hundreds of thousands of other veterans whose lives were forever altered by the trauma of war.
The record run landed Soles in the Guinness Book of World Records, but that’s not why he did it.
It took Soles more than 4 hours to complete the marathon with his pro-mask – it’s hard enough to lay in your fighting position for four hours let alone run 26 miles. That’s one studly dude.

The dude is a fine example of the type of men and women we have serving today. Not thinking of himself and an immense ego (not gonna mention any names *cough* John Soltz *cough*), but rather, a wounded brother in arms.
I would bestow Rock Star status on both of these young men! But, that’s just me.
Certified woodpecker lips…
Both of them.
We had some crazy commanders in the old days in West Berlin who would make us work an entire day wearing our Pro Mask…
Then for OIF training, we had an insane 1st Sgt who made us do PT in Pro Mask. He thought since I was the oldest dude in the company it would kill me—but I did better than many of the “kids” we had. Not being a smoker helps.
Wow…that is just awesome!!
Studly VonHardcore….
Holy Crap! That is one righteously hardcore dude!
Seriously, two hardcore dudes in that picture. Oooh-Rah!!!
Our BDE chem officer back in the 80’s routinely did the entire PT test (2mi run, situps, pushups) in MOPP-4. Just to show it could be done.
Of course, we were usually in upper Michigan (Camp Grayling) at the time and it was certainly NOT Benning or Jackson hot at the time…. far from it.
I doubt he’d be doing that in say, Kuwait at any time…

Ok, so I probably shouldn’t say this, and you guys are going to give me hell but…re Sgt. Soles – Yum!!
oh susan. thank you. I agree! I had to click over and look at some more pics of him…. yum definitely fits the bill.
“That’s one studly dude.”
#9 Susan and #10 Boo: I didn’t know what to say other than WOW, but YUM works so much better.
I greatly admire the guy who “lost his arms and legs to a roadside bomb” and is SMILING. It is very humbling indeed.
UpNorth:
I stand corrected. You’re right, two righteously hardcore dudes. Airborne!
you’re right about that too, Spockgirl #11. I noticed how happy he looked and that is just plain awesome!
wow…uh..wow….
