It’s called “Don’t Tell” for a reason

| May 15, 2010

Sparky and Jerry920 both sent an article to us about some poor victimized Military Science student who may end up owing the Army $80,000 for her four years of out-of-state tuition at UNC because she suddenly became a lesbian after the Army paid for her education (from The Chronicle of Higher Education);

Ms. Isaacson, who identified as a straight woman when she started college, says she acknowledged to herself last November that she was lesbian. After consulting with trusted friends and advisers on the campus, she revealed her orientation in a formal memorandum to Lt. Col. Monte Yoder, head of the university’s Army ROTC program. That put her in violation of Defense Directive 1304.26, better known as Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, the 1993 Clinton administration compromise that allows gay people to serve in the military as long as they do not divulge their sexual orientation.

She was notified in March that she was being discharged and told that a recommendation had been made that she repay $79,265.14 to the government.

I guess that’s why you shouldn’t tell since no one is asking. Should straight ROTC cadets confess their sexual habits to their MS advisers, too? From Fox News;

“I didn’t feel like I could be a good officer if I didn’t have integrity,” she told the Chronicle of Higher Education.

Lt. Col. Monte Yoder, head of the university’s Army ROTC program, said Ms. Isaacson would never have had to talk about her sexual orientation at all.

“I was very clear with Miss Isaacson about that,” he told the Chronicle. “I told her I won’t ask.”

See how “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” works? Did she think the Army would just go ahead let her skate on 80 grand tax payer dollars? You owe us, Ms. Isaacson – will that be cash or a cashier’s check?

There it is!

There is quite simply no/zero/nil reason that DADT can’t work.

I didn’t feel like I could be a good officer if I didn’t have integrity… Just where did her integrity kick in?

She should embrace repaying the money. Hell, a bunch of folks should embrace assisting in the repayment?

Actions have consequences, and we should be glad that her integrity was shown to be missing BEFORE she got her commission.

Cortillaen

I don’t give a rip if she likes screwing men, women, or cacti, it’s pretty obvious that she just wants the free education without fulfilling her end of the contract. Time to pay up.

NHSparky

And if she tries using the, “But I didn’t know I’d have to pay…” route, the reply, as Jonn and I both know from ROTC experience, is BULLSHIT. After the first year on scholarship, aka, “One and run,” you either owe the government money or time on active duty if you do not complete your degree or accept your commission when you do receive your degree. Since she wouldn’t be able to serve on active duty as enlisted, ergo, she better be scratching a check.

Case and point…I have said it before- dumbass attacks about not knowing regs or what have you…pay it back, sister, with interest like I did. That is the way integrity works.

Gimme *cash* baby! *cash*! Checks can be phonied….And so? Your now saying you are gay, right? HM….highly doubtful!

Drop! Give me twenty! two, three four…

What the Hell do you call that MS Isaccason? ? Get your tail down!

I would simply add, IF (emphasis on IF) the law is repealed, how do ROTC departments implement the repeal.

Today Cadet X “feels” she is a lesbian – coincidentally she’s concurrently taking women’s studies courses and learning how men destroyed the world…

Tomorrow Cadet X “feels” she is straight – because she discovered that men are in fact awesome…

Does she get to change her sexual orientation? How often? Does the army, as I saw in another post somewhere else, get to label herself “questioning” and get her own latrine, barracks, etc?

anon

Last para should have been “does she get to label herself questioning…

palolojo

Only discovered she was gay right after her education is paid for what a crock. It’ll be interesting to see what her orientation will be a few years down the road. They better make her pay.

UpNorth

Her orientation won’t take years to “come out”. She’ll be as hetero as can be, out of the service, and Obama will pay her bills.

Tim

Sounds like she needs to start scheduling payments. Maybe someone should direct her to Dave Ramsey, as she has plenty of hard lessons to learn about life, and paying debt is going to be the first one.

Gary

She believes in integrity until she learns that it is going to cost her some cash. If she truly had integrity, then she would willingly repay the money.

It wasn’t until I graduated from UNC with my Masters did I realize I’d been a life long lesbian. I get it! Must be something about Chapel Hill. You go girl…ahh, guy, ahh girl. Well…you go.

It rather sounds to me like she was probably recruited (or at least encouraged) from within the gay rights circles to come out like that at a time that the whole DADT issue is coming to the forefront, thereby forcing the military to move to boot her out, which, of course, only serves to bring further attention to the cause. I can’t imagine that she would have had any illusions that the military would not require her to pay back the money if they make good on booting her out. I don’t think most people in ROTC are really that stupid, quite frankly. I don’t think her interest is the money – she would just owe in student loans like everybody else if she had not gone ROTC and didn’t have scholarships and a daddy to take care of her. I think her interest is in advancing the cause of opening up the military to allow gays and lesbians to serve openly…not a free ride.

OldTrooper

I think she was just looking for someone to pay her college tuition and found the perfect (in her mind) plan to get that done. Unfortunately, for her, the millitary wasn’t buying the crap she was selling. If DADT would have gotten repealed before now, I know she would have found another excuse to be excused from serving.

USMC Steve

You know, I would tell them bootlickers that the only way they were getting out of my military is if they plop their “girlfriend” on my desk and munch away. Then and only then could they pack their shit and get off my base. After making repayment arrangements for the cash they owe the govt.

CRaissi

Everyone knows that this policy is about to change. In a year or two she would probably have no trouble serving as a lesbian. Instead of doing what is in her own self interest and simply riding this thing out for that time period, she decided to jump on a grenade that she dropped at her own feet. No one does such a thing unless they were coached/recruited (as Debra mentioned) or unless they are simply attention whores trying to become a martyr for their cause.

Oh, and Steve… I think you’re full of shit. Ordering someone to perform a sex act in front of you is sexual harassment. You’d probably like to think you’d say such a thing to an allegedly lesbian WM, but I doubt you ever actually did say such a thing.

HM2 FMF-SW Ret

Having read the article, I see no where where she says that she doesn’t think that she should repay it. From thea rticle it sounds like her problem is that she doesn’t want to hide who she is and would still serve if she could do so openly. I don’t really care. The tragedy here is that we are throwing away someone who could be a good soldier based on thigs that have nothing to do with her performance as a soldier or an officer.

UpNorth

Sorry, HM2, she threw herself away, and it’s no tragedy. And yeah, it does have a lot to do with what her performance may have been as an officer. She apparently couldn’t follow the simple direction of “Don’t Tell”. Wouldn’t want her leading a convoy somewhere where people were shooting things at her.

D’oh! (Integrity? She didn’t have to lie and say she was straight! She didn’t have to say she was gay or anything else either! Identity… ah, I get it. Have fun paying.)

This sounds a lot like the story about the factory Supervisor who had to choose one worker to lay off. He pulled 3 people into his office and told them his problem and that he had to choose between them.

The first employee was a 61 year old white man. He said “If you lay me off I’ll sue the company for age discrimination.”

The second employee was an African American woman. She looked at the supervisor and said “Don’t even THINK about it.”

The third employee was a 24 year old white man. He looked around the room and saw everyone was now looking at him. He bowed his head and thought a moment, then a light bulb went off in his head and he looked up quickly and said “I think I might be Gay.”

Debra

LOL…
