What will happen to volunteers who escorted students protesting ICE?

Story by Lynn La
After students walked out of school to protest ICE back in February, the Clovis and Los Angeles Police Department threatened to arrest adults who helped them leave. No charges have been filed yet, but Alfred Aldrete expects a call from the police any day.

On Feb. 10, students across California protested federal immigration enforcement after agents shot and killed ICU nurse Alex Pretti in Minneapolis. In Clovis, roughly 50 students from Buchanan High School walked out of school that day, escorted by a group of community members including Aldrete, one of the co-founders of the anti-ICE grassroots organizing group Fresno Resistance. Counterprotesters also descended on the school that day, including livestreamer Josh Fulfer, who was present during the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol.

The Clovis Police Department said that they are considering charging up to six adults for inducing students into truancy, and Aldrete thinks he’s on the list because police officers asked for his name, date of birth and phone number during the mile-long walk.

Aldrete: “And they weren’t stopping any of these (counterprotesters) who were driving by, smogging, throwing water or yelling s—. But they did stop me and two of the other adults.”

Let’s all hope Mr. Aldrete and friend aren’t disappointed by the Clovis PD. Perhaps the “counterprotesters” were not actively contributing to the delinquency of minors, sunshine.

Here’s an idea: keep the kids in school, focusing on learing (sic) and getting them that piece of paper that says they graduated high school. In the words of somebody, “ain’t nobody got time for that”, and there’s no benefit at all in allowing agitators to radicalize public school students. Let those kids spend their own money, or at least rack up substantial student loans, and protest stuff if/when they get to college. Hell, I hear that some colleges are giving credits to those who partake in anti-ICE activities.

For some strange reason when I was growing up, we didn’t do that. Oh yea, we were busy playing stick ball, punch ball, stoop ball, chinese asses up in chalked boxes , hide an seek, red light green light 123, Simon says, street roller skating, baseball and Davy Crockket card flipping, dodge ball in the school yard and mumbly peg with your pocket knife hit the penny on the top of the sidewalk expansion cracks with your spalding ball…Few others that someone around my age will contribute to..
