New ‘Tun Tavern’ to open in Philadelphia 250 years after Marine Corps was born

Jeff Schogol

Marines often boast that their beloved Corps was “born in a bar,” specifically, that it was born at Tun Tavern in Philadelphia, back when the very first would-be Marines decided to enlist on Nov. 10, 1775.

The original building that has long been celebrated as the birthplace of the United States Marine Corps was demolished in 1781, but soon a new Tun Tavern will open in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, just in time for the Corps’ 250th anniversary.

“We’re recreating history,” Dahm told Task & Purpose on Monday. “It’s about patriotism. It’s about the Marines that we lost.”

The restaurant, which is undergoing preliminary renovations, will have a “soft opening” on Friday and then its “Tun Tavern” sign will be unveiled on Nov. 10, Dahm said.

“Most importantly, we’re just trying to get it open for the Marine Corps birthday,” Dahm said. “It’s themed Marine inside for now.”

The new Tun Tavern will be a block away from the original site. A ceremony to mark the Marine Corps’ 250th anniversary will be held at the restaurant on Nov. 10 that will feature speakers and a fife and drum corps, Dahm said.

Skivvy Stacker

In 1775, on the day after the first Marines were signed in, there was a young man who entered the Tavern Known as the “TUN” to ask after this new group of hard fighting, hard charging, hard drinking, wench magnate, huge reproductive organ men who were being gathered at this particular location.
He was immediately signed into this exceedingly fine organization of amazing manhood, unbelievable group of war fighting Spartan like ass kickers, fearless and God damn merciless fucks who have ever spread their limbs across the width and breadth of the entire fucking world.
The young man was so proud to walk out of TUN to claim the title of Continental Marine!
As he walked out the door he passed a drunken Marine who had signed in the day before who was holding a flint lock rifle with an attched bayonet.
The young Marine looked down and said;
“Hail; I am a new Marine and brother, I have with me a rifle that carries not only a bayonet, but also the ability to mount a sword!”
And the drunken Marine laying in the gutter looked up with distain and said;
“Well…in the OLD CORPS…..”

He was there, but was declared medically unfit. Asthma…

Prior Service (Ret)

But Ye Old Towne Crier said he was the sharpest breather they’d ever seen. It was just hiccups. Stop attacking him.

A Proud Infidel®™

Mmmyeah, but he became a Lifeguard for his summer job despite claiming he had asthma, which is a BIG disqualifier for Military Service!

Fyrfighter

Awesome news! The original location is actually under the highway now, so this is about as good as can be done..

Glad to hear that there will be a new Tun Tavern, but me personally, “I was born on Parris Island, the land that God forgot. The sand is 18 inches deep the sun it is blazing hot, Parris I, I, Island………………”

We had a Retired postal worker semi driver that came to work for us to get a little more dough before retiring and was a Marine in Parris Island when the Marines drowned on that march

Ahhh yes, the Ribbon Creek incident back in the 1950’s with SSgt McKeon. Our DIs told us that story. I believe he got off with fairly light punishment. When I went thru in 1981 the DI’s weren’t pounding on us and beating the crap out of us like they did in the 50’s and 60’s but they got away with some physicality. And I’m so glad they did. I wouldn’t trade my training for anything. In fact, I would have felt cheated if it wasn’t what it was back in 1981.

Some little known trivia for those of you who did not serve in our beloved Marine Corps. The first Marines were recruited on 10 November, 1775, and 11 November 1775 the first documented use of the term “effing New Guy” was uttered.
