Pentagon will pay military troops, Trump says, shifting $8B
The president said Saturday that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has funds available to pay troops on Wednesday.

President Donald Trump on Saturday announced that he will direct Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to “use all available funds to get our Troops PAID on October 15th” as the government shutdown nears its third week.
After the Senate failed to approve spending legislation this week, military members were preparing to go without their paychecks on Wednesday for the first time in U.S. history.
“We have identified funds to do this, and Secretary Hegseth will use them to PAY OUR TROOPS,” the president wrote in the social media post Saturday. “I will not allow the Democrats to hold our Military, and the entire Security of our Nation, HOSTAGE, with their dangerous Government Shutdown.”
To scrounge up enough money to pay the troops, the Pentagon is tapping into its research and development accounts to use funding Congress made available for two years, according to an OMB official. Specifically, about $8 billion is being shifted from accounts that fund military research, development, testing and evaluation efforts, according to two people familiar with the plan who were granted anonymity to discuss its details.

The only legal to pay the troops is for congress to pass a continuing resolution. Even just a narrow one focused only on paying troops.
But Trump does not want congress is session because they have the signatures to force a vote on releasing the Epstein files.
You’re selectively overlooking the fact Trump asked them to forego their August recess until they could get a ZCR passed. You’re omitting the fact dems wanted 1.3 trillion dollars to fund Healthcare for, say it with me, illegals, and funding restored for NPR among other things. Not as a stop gap spending plan but to be funded through 2029.
Go pound sand with those demands. If the government stays shut down, so be it. Dems aren’t looking out for you or me, only for themselves.

Show one single time between January 20th 2021 and January 19th 2025 that you demanded that the Epstein files be released. Hell, show a single Democrat member of Congress demanding that they be released in that same timeframe. Save us your selective outrage.
Serious here-aren’t the files sealed by a Democrat District Court Judge, who refuses to unseal them? If the administration releases the files, wouldn’t that be in direct violation of the judge’s order?
Honestly, it seems like a big trap being played out. Release the files and violate the standing court order. Or, refuse to release them, get Democrats riled up and Democrats demand they be released. For fun, keep saying there’s no there there to keep people blind to the trap and the danger.

Yes, but it is actually three judges. If their statements are true then the reasoning is well founded based on established law. By the Constitution, Congress is not allowed to challenge a court ruling so the entire point is moot theater.
They can change the law on Grand Juries if they want, but it would then apply to every Grand Jury, not just the Epstein files. A very narrowly worded law would likely get thrown out on constitutional grounds the first time they tried to apply it.

You all can make light of using RDT@E funding, but a lot of that was going to things that are also important on the battlefield. Agreed Joe should get paid (as well as all of the excepted civilians working for DOW) but using that money may be a bit short sighted.
Money is fungible. Once Congress persuades key Donks to end their Tantrum, the funding will be restored and money reallocated.
They do this all the time for myriad reasons. Trump is just -way- better than most at finding loopholes and driving Bradleys through them.

Edit: to be clear; I am not against the troops getting paid. Republicans rushed to end the session to protect Trump rather than voting on a resolution to pay the troops.
Trump ordered republicans not to negotiate knowing it would force the session to close without new business.
Because he knows they now have the signatures in the house to force a vote on releasing the Epstein files as soon as they swear in the new Congress member from New Mexico.
