More service members being investigated for Kirk-related posts

| September 26, 2025

The Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard are receiving more information regarding their service members’ comments regarding Charlie Kirk’s assassination. The Army said that over a dozen Soldiers have been relieved of their duties pending investigation of their posts. The numbers of service members being investigated for their Charlie Kirk comments is expected to rise as more service members are reported to their respective branches.

Military Times:

Some social media accounts appearing to belong to service members have been identified online by other accounts for comments, including “racists should get shot” and reposts saying, “MAKE NAZIS DEAD AGAIN,” according to a review of X posts by Military Times.

Other service members have been targeted online for calling Kirk or his comments “racist” and “sexist” while also explicitly stating that they do not condone his killing. It is not clear whether any of these service members are under investigation.

An Army spokeswoman told Military Times on Wednesday that “approximately a dozen Soldiers have been suspended pending review of their social media account activity.”

“These numbers are subject to change as commands review social media activity and take appropriate action,” she added.

The Marine Corps confirmed to Military Times this week that the service branch has relieved a Marine from recruiting duties after “a social media post that does not align with our core values.” The matter is currently under investigation.

The Air Force said it was in the process of taking “necessary administrative and disciplinary actions to hold service members accountable” for inappropriate actions, but declined to say how many airmen were currently under investigation.

Similarly, the Navy said it was actively reviewing reports of social media activity that is “misaligned with the Department’s current social media guidance.”

“Service members are subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice at all times, including behavior conducted in the digital space. Sailors are expected to uphold Navy core values on duty, off duty, and online,” a Navy spokesperson told Military Times.

The Coast Guard has also identified a Guard member who carried out “inappropriate personal social media activity” that a spokesperson said was contrary to Coast Guard values.

“With the support of DHS, we are actively investigating this activity and will take appropriate action to hold the individual accountable. We recognize the harm such behavior can cause and remain steadfast in ensuring that the conduct of our personnel reflects the trust and responsibility placed in us by the American people,” the spokesperson added.

It’s a breath of fresh air to see the other side being cancelled for once.
Who’s tippy toing now?

If “inappropriate social media behavior” is grounds for punishment make sure the last one out turns off the lights.

SFC D

Yup. It’s a very thin line on an extremely slippery slope. JAG is gonna be busy for a while.

Odie

How many in JAG were posting the exact same sentiments?

SFC D

That is a damn good question.

Pucker factor is at all-time high at the flag-rank level right about now. I’m investing in popcorn.

I would love to be a fly on the wall for that meeting.

Civilians often think the Generals are conservatives but in peace time those get weeded out.

With no read-head to prepare (or get leaked) sounds like a one-way conversation about something.

A come to Jesus moment?

Could be.

OR maybe….. Tailhook 2025!!!

I thought social media was paper plates and napkins.

Staunch conservative here. At the risk of sounding like Commissar, and not wanting to get chains of command into monitoring social media, I hope the military is as willing to go after conservative members for the junk they say about libs on public sites. Best thing this chain of command could do is hammer someone for posting some stuff even if they agree with it. Even-handed application of the regs/policy would go far to stop stupid people from posting stupid stuff.

I spent my pre-retirement career keeping my mouth shut about anything that smacked of violation of Article 88. And I largely continue to as a DA civilian now. (Except some imaginary conversations now and then.) It’s not hard.

I agree. It should be equal for both sides. Just keep your mouth shut and off social media while you are a member of a branch of the service. If you break that rule, then you pay the price. Question then becomes, was it worth it for that person to run their pie-hole when no one cares what they say anyway?

SFC D

Concur 100%. I doubt very much that conservative troops are spewing what liberals are, but that’s just my opinion. I have no empirical evidence. Closes I ever came to getting in trouble for political statements was a sticker on my pickup. It said “Defeat The Dope-Smoking Draft Dodger in ’96”. Battalion commander saw it in the parking lot, asks me “SGT D, is that your truck?” He’s laughing. “Yessir!” He says “I agree with that sticker, but ya know it’s gotta go.” I knew I was walking the line with it, so I just peeled it.

How about this one….

Had a coworker that hunted raccoons, and had a bumper sticker that said Coon Hunter. It was suggested that he either remove it or put a RAC on it. He asked what the hell is a COONRAC.

Then one day General Coon showed up for a visit, made it a point to stop by our shop to see this bumper sticker and asked who the Coon Hunter was. He joked about getting a long head start before the dogs were turned lose on him.

SFC D

Is it racist if I ask the skin color of General Coon?

Mike B

White, but he was funny about the bumper sticker. Said something along the lines of “I come for a visit and find out there’s a price on my head and a person who’s specialty is hunting me.”

My Command Master Chief advice to the Sailors was this:
You can think what you want, but think about it long and hard before you actually say it. Remember the consequences and repercussions thing.

Social media is the worst thing to ever happen. Now every moron has a platform/outlet to spout nonsense that they never would face to face.

Marine0331

The way I see it, if you are part of a workforce, be that the military or a civilian business/company and they have established rules for media and on-line behavior and you break those rules, then to me it’s simple. Your butt should be terminated if that is the established punishment. You break the rules, you pay the price.

ChipNASA

Imma make an observation…..kinda simple…..
If you’re at the Base/Post auditorium with 300-400 of your closest buddies at an all call (Commander’s Call as we used to say in the Chairforce) and you wouldn’t stand up and yell it at everyone….”Hey I have a Question, (2 minutes after the Commanser and First Sergeant already “behoved and piggybacked closing remarks”)……+…” why don’t we do MORE PT, maybe some more MOPP 4 exercises and have more layouts!!! It’ll be FUN!!…..

Then leave the same shit off social media and keep it to yourself.

SFC D

Talk about inflammatory speech! That’d create an epic and very public ass whoopin’!

ANCRN

The great thing about free speech, is that it allows you, without too much difficulty, to figure out who the morons are.
And if you can’t figure out who they are, then, unfortunately, you are one.

Best advice I received a long time ago (when handwritten letters were the only social media outlet when face to face wasn’t available) was to keep your mouth shut, your eyes and ears open, and really watch and listen…what you learn about your education, your career, and your life will all benefit from listening to learn as opposed to listening to respond…

That has served me well as I learned a great many new skill sets throughout my life.

I’ve done my best to try that on social media, but goddamnit some days it sure tries a person’s patience.

There seems to be an inordinate amount of fools with internet access.

I might be one of them, what the hell do I know?

Mike B

Years ago (Mid 90s) I was walking from the parking lot towards the BX, and I’m pulling up the rear behind this Black CMSgt. Then I see this black Airman a little ways ahead of us who sees some buddies and goes into a limp, shuffle, hop walk.

The Chief sees this and yells “Hey Airman why don’t you walk like a man or Airman (Can’t recall which anymore) and quit walking like a n****r.”

I did a 180 and high tailed it out of there, to hell with the haircut, wanted no part of that. Neither did a lot of other people as there were a lot that did a 180.

Rumor control stated the CMSgt got called on the carpet, but never heard what they did about it.
