Family of Brad Jones filing wrongful death lawsuit after July 10 shooting ruled as self-defense
No charges in Lavaca shooting death

Thomas Burnam
SEBASTIAN COUNTY, Ark. —
The Sebastian County special prosecuting attorney has ruled the shooting in Lavaca on July 10, 2025 was justified under Arkansas law, and no charges will be filed.

The family of Brad Jones, the man shot and killed on July 10, announced that they will pursue a civil wrongful death lawsuit.

The investigation by the Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office revealed the shooter acted in self-defense, as according to Arkansas law.

According to the review from the special prosecuting attorney, Richard Bradley Jones was fatally injured during a confrontation a Lavaca man. The review states the man reasonably perceived an imminent threat of serious physical injury or death, adding that this is supported by three witnesses interviewed by investigators.

Special Prosecuting Attorney David L. Ethredge wrote in his review, “Based on the totality of the evidence including witness testimony, physical evidence, and investigative findings. The State cannot disprove that Mr. Acosta’s actions were legally justified.”

The family of Brad Jones issued a statement in response to the prosecutions review, expressing disappointment at the decision not to file criminal charges.

“If the criminal system will not hold him accountable, then we will fight through the civil courts,” said Brad’s daughter in a statement. “Our father’s life mattered, and we will not rest until the truth is recognized.”

To initiate a civil suit all one needs is a lawer and funds for the filing fee, then its game on.

Just because you don’t get charged with a crime does not mean you are out of the legal woods.

Criminal prosecution must prove beyond a reasonable doubt. Civil cases leave out reasonable entirely and pretty much anything is eligible to claim.

Some of the folks doing “defense training” make sure to explain to their clients that every round fired has a lawyer attached to it.
