Fund Drive Time- Once Again Into the Breach

| May 9, 2025 | 34 Comments

Y’all knew it was coming. We held off as long as we could. Our beancounter is telling us the accounts are mighty thin and there are bills to pay. After some discussion, including finger jabs and not-so-veiled threats the decision was made for me to relinquish the fundraiser helm. The Twenty-Fifth Amendment was mentioned, so with good grace I agreed to step aside. I’m very happy to introduce our very own OAM, who is taking the cup-rattling duty.

Because we have no shame

Because we have no shame, we’re rattling the cup during Military Appreciation Month. “We” is not because of a mouse in my pocket. I’m referring to AW1Ed and I. And the rest of the TAH crew.

The sad realization that once again, the coffers are beginning to ring a bit hollow prompted a discussion on how best to rectify the situation, at least for now. Obviously, an appeal to the dedicated, loyal, denizens of this corner of the interwebs must occur. Not so obvious was who would make the appeal.

There is one camp that voluntold me to do it, to which I of course happily acquiesced. Then AW1Ed graciously offered to pull me from under the bus where I was thrown. Meanwhile, there was some discussion on who’s appeal was likely to be more effective. Given the personalities involved, this quickly took on the air of competition. So, both AW1Ed and I will be posting our best heartstring plucking attempts – cue Sarah McLauglin.

For the record, I’m leaving it up to AW1Ed and the others to figure out how to tally and track this ridiculousness. Yep, that is my preemptive excuse for coming in second best.

In all seriousness –

The simple truth is there is a lot that goes into providing this space for all the loyal TAH curmudgeons and deplorables to commiserate, find news of special relevance, and snipe and support one another in our united mission of viewing the news of the day through the military and veteran lens. Others have explained in the past some of those real-world costs like webhosting, as well as the sadly necessary expenses like legal representation.

The one cost that is not measured in dollars is the countless hours so many devote to providing content and attend to the behind-the-scenes details required to keep this site running. To be clear, it is a labor of love willingly given, and no remuneration is requested, nor would such be accepted. Each of us are here doing what we do because we believe in upholding Jonn’s vision as long as we have breath in our bodies.

Over the years, so many have come to form connections with each other, even when real-world names are not known. It’s fascinating to ponder how people who only know each other as a pseudonym offer sincere congratulations for accomplishments, heartfelt care and support in times of tribulation or genuinely grieve when a longtime commentator passes. There is truly something to be said about knowing there are people in the world who simultaneously could pass you in the street without recognizing your face and hold warm, positive thoughts for your well-being based on a connection you share in this virtual world. This is something worthy of saving, and cherishing. I do so without shame.

For me, it has been a most unexpected journey. As one of the few here who never raised the hand, never took the oath, I am deeply humbled and honored to be allowed to share my perspective. Granted, there are those who’d rather I went away and enjoyed my life elsewhere, particularly when I get all psychological. I could make a comment about that being something worth investigating professionally and probably diagnosable, but that would border on the unkind. It would also violate one of the most basic premises of Jonn’s. All views are welcome. If said views are … inelegantly … expressed or unsupported by some semblance of reality, all responses to those views are equally welcome.

So, my appeal is simple. If you can, throw a few (or a lot) of dollars this way. The Donate button sits in the top-right corner of every page. You can do so on a recurring, monthly basis, as a one-time gift, or if you come across some couch change you’re not sure what to do with, we’ll graciously accept it all.

Most of all, your continued presence, participation, and patronage is what is truly appreciated. Happy sniping and may the most honest, heartfelt, and deserving appeal win!

A reminder that none of the staff is paid. Service is our only reward. 100% of donations go to website-related upkeep.

AW1Ed

An aside, snail-mail address available on request.

Pains me that I’m not able to help right now. Got a few things in the works, a.d if this happens to be the path God leads me down, things will change and in a month or so I’ll be able to do my part.

Old tanker

Done.

Slow Joe

My 100 bucks are in.
I wish I could help more.
Thank you for everything you do.

Same here Slow Joe, I used to make a monthly donation but the price went up on my leased 2025 RAV 4 so I have to watch where the moola shmoola is going.

Leasing is where buying a 14 year old Camaro at 63% interest starts to look good.

Electrons are faster than stamps.⚡️

I think I donated after fighting with the on line security game.
Got a chuckle outta “any special instructions for the seller?”

Hope the rest of the miscreants can toss in a few bucks.
Keep a good thing going.

Commissioner Wretched

I just made what contribution I can. TAH must remain open!

Is this like the annual Navy Marine Corps Relief Drive? You don’t have to donate, but if you do, you will receive a 96, and if you don’t, you just might find yourself on the DNCO roster Memorial Day Weekend. Whether you donate or not, it will have no impact on your ability to score the highly coveted title of First Commenter on the Weekend Open Thread. Any ability to post or not post based on your donation is completely coincidental.

This reminds me of the local Memorial Day drive by the
American Legion lady handing out red poppys for donations.
I always get one to hang from the car mirror.

Where’s my TAH flower?

SFC D

She wrote the fundraising post.

Flowers, How about “Blue Flowers” by the Fort Greene Brooklyn NYC Strangers 1954 on the King Record label..Nice pop vocal group harmony ballad.

Contributors to this year’s fundraiser are eligible for some fabulous prizes to include:

A one year subscription to some outdated Red Hat Software

A weekend of skydiving with The Round Ranger and his best buddy Will Chamberlain

An evening of wine and Costco cheese with Heavy Chevy

An autographed copy of Weekend With Rita signed by the fourth most hygienically challenged man in the world

An evening with Phil Monkress, as he recounts his exploits as a US Navy SEAL.

Grunt

I thought about suggesting a scenic flight with Daniel Bernath but that idea crashed.

Hack Stone

You’ll remember that flight for the rest of your life.

Daisy Cutter

Give a man a ride in an airplane and you make him happy. Teach a man to fly without fuel, and you’ll give him a thrill that lasts for the rest of his life.

And you’ll give him grounds for lawsuits for the rest of his life.

” Because we have no shame…”

You gave it to a girl and our own lovely OAM. (no offense but jes pointing out facts.)

Gotdamn, you know us old fuckers are a soft touch and this is just making it worse. 🤣🖕😘

Well it happens to be payday Friday and I’ve done paid all the bills and sent family monies owed for Mother’s Day flowers procured remotely so now, being the PTSD/OCD/EIEIO dood that I am, I’m contributing a figure that I can afford and also makes a round number in my check book.
Cheers TAH, Happy Day and Many more….

My check is in the mail

Actually, my electrons are in the wires.

RGR 4-78

Spent all morning burning a brush pile while adding more to the pile.

Been drinking back ache meds for a while.

I will get to this soon, just like I always do.

RGR 4-78

It is done.

26Limabeans

There should be a contest to guess the amount of money in
the jar pictured above. Winner gets a free subscription to TAH.

I’m gonna start the bidding at $11.80

Green Thumb

Done.

Keep up the good work.

Green Thumb

Someone call down to All-Points Logistics and ask Phil Monkress to donate.

A Terminal Lance Coolie

A Terminal Lance Coolie

It’s an old code, but it checks out.

Suppose I should be glad I’m not young, dumb, and still in, or I’d be hauled over the barrel now.

Tallywhagger

Ponied up, worth every penny. Let me know if you need more. Jonn was always a good steward, I trust that you all are, as well.
