Joe Biden approves Ukraine’s using US rounds to strike Russian territory

| June 1, 2024

US aid to Ukraine came with an important requirement. None of the weapons that the U.S. provided to Ukraine were to be used to strike targets on Russian Federation territory. However, Russia’s push towards Kharkiv left the Ukrainians with the inability to deal with this threat without using western rounds to strike targets within Russia. After initial hesitance, Joe Biden agreed to let the Ukrainian Army to strike targets within the Russian Federation. However, they could only use these rounds to strike in Russian areas near Kharkiv. The ban remains in effect for other Russian areas. Before Biden’s approval, other NATO countries authorized Ukraine to use their rounds against targets on Russian territory near Kharkiv.

From Associated Press:

Biden’s directive allows for U.S.-supplied weapons to be used for “counterfire purposes in the Kharkiv region so Ukraine can hit back against Russian forces that are attacking them or preparing to attack them,” one official said.

Ukrainian officials have stepped up calls on the U.S. administration to allow their forces to defend themselves against attacks originating from Russian territory. Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, is just 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the Russian border.

Biden’s decision was first reported by Politico.

Ukrainian officials, most notably Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, have been increasingly vocal in arguing that the restriction was putting Ukrainian forces in an untenable situation as Russia intensified attacks around the northeast Kharkiv region.

The advances came with Russia exploiting a lengthy delay in replenishment of U.S. military aid and as Western Europe’s inadequate military production has slowed crucial deliveries to the battlefield for Ukraine.

Talks about changing the policy intensified inside the Biden administration more than two weeks ago, after Russia stepped up its offensive around Kharkiv, according to one of the officials familiar with the White House deliberations.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan and Gen. CQ Brown, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, held a secure video conference with their Ukrainian counterparts in which the Ukrainian side pressed for permission to use U.S. weaponry to hit Russian positions across the border that were being used to attack the Kharkiv region, according to a U.S. official familiar with the White House deliberation.

Following that May 13 meeting with the Ukrainians, Sullivan, Austin and Brown huddled and agree to make a recommendation to Biden to alter the policy.

Sullivan presented the recommendation to Biden two days later, making the case that it was common-sense for the Ukrainians to be able to strike back to counter the attacks on their land that were originating from Russian territory. Biden agreed.

Later on May 15, Biden had a follow-up conversation with Gen. Christopher Cavoli, who leads U.S. European command, Austin and Sullivan and asked them to move forward on finalizing the details to the change in policy.

Meanwhile, during Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit to Kyiv two weeks ago, Zelenskyy made his case for using American weapons to strike back at positions in Russia that were launching attacks into north and northeast Ukraine.

And still:

Not a single peace march in Europe…

Not a single “give peace a chance” concert in America…

Not a single Cindy Sheehan on the nightly evening news…

Not even a potential death count on the front page of the NYT…

Okay, yes, but beside that (Orban isn’t a transnational progressive eat-ze-bugs type) Europe thinks it’s cool.

RCAF-CHAIRBORNE

Remember when the Left was
the Anti-War side protesting the GWOT??
Now they are A OK with funding a proxy war with Russia ( whilst backing a very UNdemocratic dictator ) and backing terrorists like HAMAS and committing antisemitic acts on a scale not seen since 1945.
Kinda makes you wonder

Like the Free Speech Movement at Berkeley, it was only ever about freedom of THEIR speech. Whatever they want is right, because they want it; their way or the highway.

…while the UK, liked many other undersized European militaries today, may not be able to beat the quanitity involved in modern war with its forces’ quality:

Germany’s gotten woken up by Russia being Russia again without Adolf and co. being involved, though… seem to be channeling World War 2 and conventional aspects of Cold War/WW3 they never wanted to face back then and then some now:

Zelensky’s five year term ended May 20th. He has no legitimate claim to power.

In addition:

He has canceled elections.

He jails anyone who dissent.

He bans opposition parties.

He arrests opposition party leaders.

He has seized all media.

He tortures and murders American citizens.

He has closed and seized hundreds of churches.

Hell of a “democracy” and freedom to die for…

Could you make up any more excuses for a tyrant?

And you think it’s OK to send 100s of billions and the lives of the US military to defend that?

You really can’t fix your level of stupid.

Well, it has been the way the US operates for decades. We supported the Shaw. We supported Saddam against Iran. We supported the Mujahideen against the Soviets. We supported the highly corrupt South Vietnamese against Ho. We supported Syngman Rhee in South Korea. We are doing it today supporting the Suadis against Iran. Its the old “The ememy of my enemy is my friend.” Yeah, it’s a sucky policy, and I don’t like it. But I’m not going to get all outraged over playing that game again against Russia. And we haven’t lost a single US Soldier in Ukraine. For that reason, I’m ok with shelling out hundreds of billions of $$$ for Ukrainians to kill Russians.

Oh, so kinda like here in the USA, hunh???

Nah bro, Russian ain’t mad.

Russia warns of nuclear war with NATO after Ukraine’s ATACMS strikes: ‘We’re not bluffing’ (msn.com)

Medvedev suggested Russia could strike hostile countries with strategic weapons, saying: “This is, alas, neither intimidation nor bluffing.

“The current military conflict with the West is developing according to the worst possible scenario. There is a constant escalation when it comes to the firepower of NATO weapons being used. Therefore, nobody today can rule out the conflict’s transition to its final stage.”

The former Russian president then referred to the chilling remark made by Putin earlier this week, when he warned of the “serious consequences” if Western weapons are allowed in attacks on Russian soil.

Math problem:
WWI + WWII = ?

Remember, I said to build the bunker last year? That is only if you want to survive it. Not sure everyone will want to do that. Mostly they will bomb the useless parts of the US like all the big cities full of formerly great stuff but now teeming with liberal voters and people asking for handouts. Nuking them will also solve the immigration problem.

All the petro resources and agro is out in the countryside. Even much of the once great US industry is either in smaller cities or moved to the South.

No problem, Democrats be like:

I back fighting the Russians. Putin is an evil man trying to reinvent the Soviet Union. Seeings as how Putin attacked Ukraine, it gives many democracies a chance to fight back against the encroachment of the Dictator Putin. Ukraine just happens to be a useful tool at this time to do the dirty work. This is like Vietnam being supplied with Russian weapons and advisors. I would prefer peace. Putin does not want peace, he wants the Soviet Union back.

There was peace until a western backed 2014 coup and eight years of shelling the Donbas.

Jimbo

Crimea being annexed by Putin kinda got things kick started

Great, great, just great.

So ole pedo Joe will listen to his advisors about Ukraine but not about the Afghan pullout. Clowns advising a clown.

Poking the bear? A sound Military decision? Getting closer to WWIII? Should we be doing more? Should we be doing anything? GTFO? “The war is not to be won…the war is meant to be endless.” And so it has been since Cain picked up that rock.

Again…my sympathies lay only with the innocents caught up in this mindless madness. Glad the we managed to get some of our own out very early…and proud that I helped in some small way.

No incumbent US President has failed to win re-election while there was an ongoing shooting war.

I imagine this is Brandon’s reasoning – who cares if Russia nukes Phoenix or Des Moines, as long as it happens before November? Hell, he might even get lucky and they nuke Florida.

5JC

It’s been quite a year for a lot of firsts. No president has won reelection being this unpopular this close to the election.

Hate_me

A lot of firsts, wrapped up in an old blanket.

Corruption adapts and evolves to fit a changing political landscape, but it’s still corruption. The leopard, given enough pressure and multiple generations, eventually WILL change its spots; it may even become unrecognizable as the leopard we know – but it will still be a predator.

I support the Washington Doctrine of Unstable Alliances, and it should be applied here.

Hack Stone

It’s a good thing that Joe Biden won the White House in 2020, otherwise Trump would have dragged us into WWIII. No joke. 🙄

Jimbo

I think Putin was waiting for a weak President and FJB fit the bill. Trump kept the lid on Russian expansion. As Putin knew Trump would be someone he would have to deal with. Peace through strength. A strong America is good for the world.

Prior Service (Ret)

I’m all for using thuggy Ukraine to hammer thuggier Russia, but I can’t say I’m for giving Russia the continued opportunity to learn how to fight our key weapons systems. Russia has learned more in the last 2.5 years about how to fight the next war than we have in the last decade.

Hate_me

Are you suggesting that a US military with the discipline and fashion sense of Mad Max extras won’t win the next war?

rgr769

Are you questioning the fighting spirit of our Woke military with its alphabet people gender confusion? C’mon man, we have some pretty tough looking bull dikes in uniform. And who says you can’t deploy a pregnant “man.”

Indeed.

Just An Old Dog

Fuck Russia and Fuck Putin right in the goat ass. Ukraine is far from a beacon of Democracy but they are certainly a much lesser evil than the POS who has been fucking over his own country and trying to recreate the Soviet Union.
Putin is literally the richest man on the planet while most of the Russian people in the rural parts of the Federation live in the 1930s.
