Repeat domestic abuser stabbed, DMPD says it was self-defense

DES MOINES, Iowa – A Des Moines man is behind bars after police said he assaulted his wife Tuesday night, causing injuries that sent her to the hospital.Travis Jeffrey Barker, 37, is charged with domestic abuse assault – 3rd offense. Court records show Barker has prior convictions for domestic abuse assault in Boone and Guthrie counties.
The arrest stems from an incident at a northeast Des Moines apartment around 6:45 p.m. Officers from the Des Moines Police Department were called to the 3900 block of E. 23rd St. on a report of a stabbing. After arriving officers discovered it was a domestic fight and Barker was determined to be the primary aggressor, according to Sgt. Paul Parizek of the DMPD.
A criminal complaint filed against Barker said he assaulted his wife by pushing her into a wall, causing a lump on the back of her head. Sgt. Parizek said during the incident, Barker’s wife stabbed him in the shoulder in self-defense.

Armed citizen patrols start in Hartford amid violence concerns

A new controversial armed citizen patrol has launched in Hartford.Organizers say the people will be legally carrying as they walk around parts of the city where violence has taken a toll.
Though some – including the city’s mayor – are raising concerns about the effort.
In Hartford’s North End on Saturday, a group of people looked to patrol and clean up Garden Street.
“It was important to come out here because we believe that we have to keep the community safe, keep the community clean. And we’re doing this by being out here for a few hours, clean up the community, pick up the trash,” said Marcus Long, of Hartford.
Garden Street has seen its share of gun violence including a double homicide in February, which is what prompted the push for civilian armed patrols.
“We are legally armed and we are patrolling,” said Cornell Lewis, the founder of the Self-Defense Brigade. “The people on Garden Street came to us and asked us for help.”

Suuuuure……because he’s not in control, and there’s no tax money involved that he can skim.
But I can understand one concern, a bunch of armed yahoos roaming the streets, and the possibilities of innocent neighborhood citizens being shot.
I do hope that this group has a vetting and training process, and a few rules of conduct. Other then that, good on ya, and good luck. ‘Bout time to kick the “experts” out, and take charge of your own affairs.
A gang sent out scouts to my neighborhood to add it to their turf. It was peaceful enough, they were just showing their strength and letting us know who was in charge. My next door neighbor and I took up the challenge. We realized we hadn’t had a weapon cleaning session for some time and we decided that his front porch would be a good place to do it. The looks on the gang members’ faces when they saw me with a 12 gauge shot gun and my neighbor with a .30 caliber rifle were priceless. There was no gang graffiti in my neighborhood.

Sounds like its time for the ex-Mrs Barker to graduate from a knife to a gun (plus training and lots of practice) for self defense against ex-hubby.
A restraining order is just a piece of paper that you use for target practice.
But, her life, her choice.
Betcha Mr. Barker quit barking and started whimpering when his target of abuse went all stabby on his azz. Fight back, Ladies…the life you save will be your own.
