Whenever the news reports some miscreant using a “long rifle”…..
“Dang. That would have been epic.”
True.
WWI had already come and gone, more than one hundred years ago.
Still love my 30.06
Deer camp (1978) old timers had the best toys, don’t know what happed to them.
My Ruger M77 dropped my first deer at 70 yards. It is a 30.06. My first one shot one kill.
Doing what Dad, or Officer Friendly, tells you to do, may and/or may not keep you from getting shot. Two (2) more cases that coulda been dual posting, here and/or the SPoTW Thread.
Had maternal and paternal Grand Pappies that fought at Kings Mountain against the Lobsterbacks. Some family lore has it the Long Rifle that one of them had was used again during the 1812 War, The Red Stick War, and finally at The Alamo.
My, my, my…of all the Sister Golden Haired Surprises that our Beloved AW1Ed uses to bring joy to us, THAT particular Sister Golden Haired Surprise is a favorite. Curves in places that many today don’t even have places, seems to be doing a fine job in the Over Watch position, and has “breastworks” worthy of a full frontal assault. I gots something I’d like to aim at that Miss….and it ain’t THAT small.

A patched .495 ball in front of 50g of Pyrodex may not produce impressive numbers compared to modern projectiles, but it will make quite an impression of a perp.
Had an acquaintance some half-century ago who’d spend his summer between college semesters working in a stop-and-rob type ‘convenience’ store. He had the midnight shift, when some fellow decided to do a little quick fundraising drive utilizing a more modern firearm. This was back before our 2nd Amendment rights had been restored, but by Texas law ‘antique’ type firearms did not qualify as a firearm for legal purposes. Acquaintance, therefore, had a cap-and-ball revolver under the counter.
He said the perp’s face showed some surprise just before he saw a flash and puff of smoke. It was his final surprise this side of the grave.
OUCH!
