North Korea says it will expel Travis King, the US soldier who crossed into the country in July

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea said Wednesday that it would expel a U.S. soldier who crossed into the country two months ago through the heavily armed border separating the Koreas.
The announcement of Pvt. Travis King’s release came relatively quickly and surprised some observers who had expected the North to drag out his detention in the hopes of squeezing concessions from Washington at a time of high tensions between the rivals.
The North’s official Korean Central News Agency reported that authorities have finished their questioning of King but did not say when officials plan to expel him or where.
King, who had served in South Korea, sprinted into North Korea while on a civilian tour of a border village on July 18, becoming the first American confirmed to be detained in the North in nearly five years.
At the time he crossed the border, King was supposed to be heading to Fort Bliss, Texas, following his release from prison in South Korea on an assault conviction.

Reminds me of 2002 when they started sending us soldiers back to their original company who had gone AWOL any time in the last five years. It was so we could; “address leadership concerns that the previous chain of command had not addressed and possibly led to the soldier going AWOL”.
I was in company command and got one who had been gone for four years. Dude appeared to be a homeless meth head. I told him it was battalion policy that AWOL soldiers had to take a urinalysis upon return and that if he were hot he would face a special court marital by a field grade officer (current Brigade policy at the time) if he came up hot. I put a guard on him for 24 hours until he could/ would pee. Dude literally shit and pissed himself rather than go in a cup.
This short lived experiment was a nightmare. Most fled as soon as possible. Some were awaiting prosecution for other crimes. None could carry a security clearance.

I was hoping he’d have been expelled across the northern border. China could find some use for him, I’m sure. Instead, he’s back in the hands of the Army, albeit now internationally known (and not in a good way), facing much more serious charges than he was two months ago, and most likely on his way to a life of poverty and further poor decision making.
The Army isn’t for everybody, but in today’s volunteer force, I don’t get why someone would let their conscious decision to enlist for 3-4 years destroy the rest of their lives. If you get in and don’t like it, suck it up; you volunteered knowing that it wasn’t going to be a walk in the park. Do your time and get out with an Honorable discharge. If you’re really unfit you might see an early exit, but don’t make it worse. Even some of the “worst” Soldiers I knew were still good Soldiers at heart. They’d screw up, consistently fail the APFT, get a DUI or two, or pop hot on a urinalysis, but when told to do something, they’d execute without question, even if it was for their pending chapter or ART-15. They could see the light and, if anything, it made them remember their Army Values and basic courtesy and respect.
King should receive a Dishonorable discharge and serve some amount of time at Leavenworth, but as other commenters have noted, it would not surprise me if this Administration places him on a pedestal and makes him the victim.

Over run, manhandled, and trussed up I was carted off to the brig where I was the only soul brother there. Weeks of torture followed in that there was no fried chicken, no rap music, ribs, watermelon, just rice and fish heads. It wasn’t even Uncle Ben’s Rice.
