US Special Forces in American embassy in Ukraine
There is a small U.S. Military presence in Ukraine at the American embassy. A leaked Pentagon document indicated that U.S. Special Forces are operating within Ukraine. However, John Kirby said that they were involved with material accountability. These service members are accounting for weapons and other types of support.

White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby has revealed to Fox News on Wednesday that there is a “small U.S. military presence” at the American embassy in Ukraine.
Kirby was asked about leaked Pentagon documents suggesting there are U.S. Special Forces operating inside the war-torn country.
“I won’t talk to the specifics of numbers and that kind of thing. But to get to your exact question, there is a small U.S. military presence at the embassy in conjunction with the Defense Attachés office to help us work on accountability of the material that is going in and out of Ukraine,” Kirby said, referencing the weapons and other support the U.S. has been sending to Kyiv. “So they’re attached to that embassy and to that the defense attache.”
Kirby, who was speaking on the sidelines of President Biden’s trip to Northern Ireland, added that those troops “are not fighting on the battlefield.”
“There has been no change to the president’s mandate that there will not be American troops in Ukraine fighting in this war,” he said.

That is so blatantly transparent a lie. The green beanies don’t do that stuff. That is a supply officer’s job.
It’s not uncommon to find a long-tabber or two working for the defense attaché’s office. Their language skills (which often aren’t worth much beyond the paper showing their score) and their operational experience with IPIs, NGOs, etc. (which is worth a lot) are often desirable candidates for many liaison positions. It’s a pretty cool job for those who can land it.
It’s more common among FAO/SF officers. To drop a whole team on would not be the same thing.
Sure, but the article only mentions unspecified “U.S. Special Forces” rather than suggesting anything like an ODA. Kirby is even more vague with “a small U.S. military presence at the embassy…”
Given that foreign military sales are a major element of our involvement there, there’s nothing here that doesn’t pass the sniff test.
*not that I wouldn’t be surprised if there is an ODA or three there, but a few guys working thru the embassy on materiel transfer is perfectly reasonable.

If they are going in as observers to see the reaping of the scunion on the ground that could make sense. But I don’t think anyone really believes that.
