Weekend Open Thread
As many commenters here and on other websites have pointed out, CNN and MSNBC viewers may find themselves seeing programing showing Liz Cheney. One aftermath to her defeat involves the Senate Minority Leader reportedly talking about how the Senate races are a different ball of wax from the House races. Enjoy your weekend!

YES! “First” twice now.
I hope that this is all being recorded in the TAH WOT Book of Firsts for posterior…..errrr……posterity. Yeah. That’s it……posterity.
It was. Been maintaining the TAH WOT Book of Firsts since 01 January 2015.
You know what they say:
Our lives are chronicled by two dates and a dash.
Myself, I plan on cramming as much fun and games into that dash as possible and keeping the handwritten copy of the WOT Book of Firsts is part of that fun./s
And I thank you for it. Twice now.
By milliseconds! Have a great weekend Tox, et all!
TY, TY very much.
I will, once again, endeavor to be a benevolent and munificent ruler (12″) for the week.
If it was anybody else, besides Roh-Dog, I would be demanding a recount! Nano seconds between the FIRST 3 Contenders. And ALL of them (GO) Army! Kinda makes ya proud don’t it!
The Crown, Sceptur, and the keys to the Throne Room, Good Sire. You Humble Knave awaits by your Command.

DID YOU KNOW…?
What was the first cartoon series made specifically for television?
By Commissioner Wretched
didyouknowcolumn@gmail.com
Okay, some of you are starting to get a little silly out there. (I don’t feel so alone any more.)
Last week, I pointed out that actor James Doohan as Mr. Scott was the only “redshirt” who survived the entire series of Star Trek. I immediately began getting e-mail from folks who said, “Well, what about Lt. Uhura? She survived the entire series too!”
Yes, she did, and in all except the first episode she was in, Nichelle Nichols wore a red uniform, too, in the role. But it was a skirt, not a shirt.
See, I can be pedantic, too.
Anyway, unless you’re a Star Trek fan, none of this matters to you in any case, so let’s move on to this week’s trivia!
At least that matters.
Did you know …
… only one English word has double letters four times in a row? The word is subbookkeeper. (And that’s probably the reason you don’t see that word very often, too.)
… green was once considered an unlucky color in Ireland? Before the association with the Emerald Isle, green was associated with fairies who stole children and brides. (I’m assuming that has to do with one’s definition of “unlucky,” myself.)
… a gravestone in Salt Lake City, Utah, bears a strange enigma? The grave of Lilly E. Gray (1881-1958) can be found in the Salt Lake Cemetery. Nothing unusual about that – the gravestone lists her name, and the dates of birth and death. The enigma is found in what is inscribed beneath that – “Victim of the Beast 666.” Nobody knows why that was put on Gray’s resting place, or what it was supposed to mean. (And that’s probably a good thing, I imagine.)
I couldn’t resist, did a bit of google-fu. Seems like she was perfectly normal, though a bit unlucky in the husband department having been widowed twice. But, her twin sister was committed to the Traverse City State Hospital in 1898, make of that what you will. This fact may explain her choice in her last husband.
Elmer, her last husband, was a bit of a character though now it is known he had Parkinson’s and probably – evidenced by his life – suffered delusions. He was the one who wrote her headstone.
Lilly Gray: Victim of The Beast 666 — The Dead History
Fascinating stuff! Thank you, OAM … I’ll update the entry in a future column. Glad I could tickle your google-fu!
Lillie Gray’s Death Certificate.
Please note that her name on her Baptismal Certificate is “Edith Lily Gray”, but her Death Certificate reads “Lillie Edith Gray.”
https://axaemarchives.utah.gov/cgi-bin/indexesresults.cgi?RUNWHAT=IDXFILES&KEYPATH=IDX208420274927
And yet, her headstone has “Lilly E. Gray”.
Check this out. Her and Elmer were married in ELKO, NEVADA!!! Home of Lester Kent Brown (remember HIM???) 😄
https://archivesnews.utah.gov/2017/10/31/lilly-e-gray/
Not that odd. Dad was named for his father… and had a different name. Interesting story.
… an Ohio teenager found out the hard way about karma? In September of 2010, Tylier Myers (1991-2010) was killed in an auto accident after a semi truck ran a stop sign in Norwalk, Ohio. At the time of his death, Myers was said by police to be in the process of stealing stop signs.
… you may be an ailurophobe? If you are, you hate cats. An ailurophile, on the other hand, is someone who loves cats. (If you’re just ambivalent about cats, you must be an ailurowhatever.)
… the balsamic vinegar you find in grocery stores may not be the real thing? Traditional balsamic vinegar takes a long time to make. It’s aged between 12 and 25 years, in a battery of seven barrels of successively smaller sizes. The cost at the end is more than $100 per fluid ounce. What you find in the grocery store labeled as “balsamic vinegar” is most likely a regular wine vinegar, with flavoring, thickeners, and coloring agents added. (And cheaper, too.)
In about 1996 some Teenagers got convicted of Manslaughter after a fatal wreck occurred at an intersection where they had stolen stop signs!
… the first cartoons produced specifically for television were made in the 1940s and 1950s? Crusader Rabbit was the first cartoon program made for the then-new market of television. Created in 1948, the series was produced by Jay Ward (1920-1989), who used what he learned on the show to make the wildly popular Rocky and Bullwinkle program in the early 1960s. Crusader Rabbit was a black-and-white production, because all television sets except for some experimental models were in monochrome as well. A later series of the cartoons was produced in color, but Ward had no involvement with that series. The first color cartoon created specifically for TV was Colonel Bleep, a bizarre science-fiction-themed program, in 1957. Those cartoons lasted only one season, and are very difficult to find today. (And if you find a Colonel Bleep episode, you’ll realize how bizarre they really were.)
I remember watching Crusader Rabbit (& Tiger Rags). IIRC, it was on the Captain Kangaroo program.
It was a simple two-step cartoon, but entertaining enough (at & for the times) to keep me entertained.
(mimes left arm forward, right arm back – then – right arm forward, left arm back – two step)
Q: if Crusader Rabbit was the first cartoon made for TV, then what about Betty Boop? I remember also watching her a lot back-in-the-day. IIRC, Betty was from the 20s? What media was she in before TV cartoons? Movie theaters? Newspapers?
I know that Popeye was in Thimble Theater cartoons, and was (possibly? probably?) in theaters as a cartoon filler?
(yes, on some things, impressions are deep in a young child, and last a lifetime – early TV cartoons were mine)
(the cartoons I could name that I watched as a young’un…..)
Betty Boop cartoons were made for theatres, as were Popeye, Tom & Jerry, Merrie Melodies and Looney Tunes. Once the studios stopped producing cartoons for theatres, they moved them over to TV – but Crusader Rabbit was the first made specifically for television.
I remember watching those old toons in the early 1950’s and a handful of WW2 Vets that came over to our house to watch the movie on our small screen TV “A walk In The Sun” about the fighting in Italy
According to one trivia source I read, Felix the Cat was THE FIRST image ever transmitted over a TV wavelength, so wouldn’t that make that the first cartoon character ever transmitted via video?
It would indeed! And I highlighted that fact in a column a few years back.
The item in this week’s column concerned the first cartoon series created specifically for television. Felix was a movie cartoon even when his image was transmitted over the first successful TV wavelength.
Good catch, API!
… being cheap can come back to haunt a business? Take, for instance, the case of the famous movie and TV collie, Lassie. In 1951, MGM Studios owed Lassie’s owner and trainer, Rudd Weatherwax (1907-1985), about $40,000 in back pay for the services of the dog. The studio was not planning any more movies featuring the heroic collie, so instead of giving Weatherwax the money they owed him, they gave him the rights to the Lassie trademark. Weatherwax turned that into a television show that ran, under various names, for 19 total seasons between 1954 and 1999 and made him (and the collie and successors) millions of dollars. Additional trivia note: the character of Lassie was a girl in the movies and on television, but was always played by a male collie. (I never understood how Lassie’s owners could interpret her barking to mean “Timmy’s fallen in the well,” but that’s just me. I don’t speak collie, I guess.)
Speak collie? Sheeeeet, I have it on good authority if one drinks enough mezcal one can, and will, talk to anything with a pulse, and somethings that don’t.
That reminds me, a street sign out there owes me an apology for saying those things about my momma and dulling my knife.
“What’s that Lassie, Timmys stranded in a mine field, lead the way girl.”
“What’s that Lassie? Timmy’s joined the Democrat Party?”
“Fuck it.”
That Timmy’s pretty much a textbook dumbass.
If you can’t figure out who “Timmy” is in your Basic Training platoon, then you are the Timmy. 😆
… a baby llama is called a cria? That’s also the term for a baby alpaca.
… in the state of Washington, it is against the law to sleep in someone’s outhouse without their permission? (Why you would want to sleep in an outhouse is another matter entirely.)
… a chef’s hat has 100 pleats? Called a toque, the 100 folds or pleats in it are said to represent the 100 different ways an egg can be cooked. (One hundred ways, eh? List ‘em.)
Speaking of toques, it was 39 years ago today that Bob & Doug McKenzie made their theatrical debut, bringing Shakespeare’s Hamlet a new generation of hosers, to include Hack Stone. So take off, eh?

The Joint Andrews Convenience Store had no Molson’s, nor any other Canadian Brew. Looks like the Kirin’s will have to suffice for the viewing.
I almost downvoted you before remembering that I don’t care about votes.
As a die-hard Habs fan, I will always love the Molson family – but the go-to Canadien bier should be Labatt Bleu.
I’m not surprised you couldn’t find either on Andrews, but I’m shocked there were no Unibroue labels (a brilliant Belgian-style brewery out of Chambly).
La Fin Du Monde is probably their most common beer, but I personally recommend the Blanche de Chambly. I’m willing to bet you can find some Unibroue at the Class-6.
There are many more than a hundred. By Escoffier’s time, I believe the known French catalogue was somewhere around 139… probably more if you consider auxiliary kitchen uses of eggs (such as an egg raft for clarifying consommé) but folk origins are a colorful bit of history that should be encouraged.
And I do encourage ’em, every week! (The cool thing is … I get paid to do it!)
The word “FARTSDUMPER” is Norwegian for Speed Bumps, now y’all know!!! 😋
… you may suffer from cenosillicaphobia? If you do, you’re not alone. Cenosillicaphobia is the fear of an empty alcoholic drink, especially the empty drink left behind after you’ve consumed it. (Oh, the jokes I could do right here …)
… humans cannot taste water? Many animals – among them, dogs and pigs – can taste water. But humans can’t. What we do taste are the chemicals and impurities in water. Pure, distilled water usually “tastes” terrible, because it has no taste at all – and even if it did, we couldn’t tell.
… America’s best-selling ice cream flavor is vanilla? (But of course!)
Now … you know!
I keep a bottle of whiskey handy in case I see a snake…which I also keep handy!🥃🐍
Speakin-‘a snakes, some Dude told me that when a Rattlesnake rattles at you and coils back like it’s threatening to strike, you just calmly grab the rattle, tell B’rer Snake to mellow out and all is good. I called him a few times since to confirm his advice and alas, NO ANSWER for at least two weeks!
Why public sector unions are a bad idea… cops try inform school for two years that their counselor was a convicted sex offender but the e-mails bounced back (no one could send a real letter, pick up the phone or go over there in person):

Anyone here have a Dog as a Fur Baby?
If so, give them extra treats and belly rubs, because today, 26 August 2022, is their Special Day!

I’ll have to remember that for my mini Schnauzer when I get home.
The cats could care less.
Not A Joke Or Sarcasm.
To All The Gentlemen of TAH:
This is an updated version of “In The Navy”.
Same song by the Village People, BUT NOT the Village People video in nature.
We think you all will be pleasantly surprised.
3 minutes. Enjoy!
I would jump overboard. One week a month they’d be drawing straws on who’d get the right to castrate you.
Besides, could you imagine the hair nests in those drains?!!!! And would you really have time to …. after opening all the jars for the galley?
Hmmm. This kind of reminds me of this:
Seems like someone’s been at sea too long!
Now, about those Ray-Ban Aviators… she gets a pass. 😎
As we used to say in Navy boot Camp- Gee I Beans Gee I gravy gee I wished I joined the Navy hippo hoppo ring out the moppo . Anyone in Great Lakes Boot Camp remember that
Sad to say that was gone by the time I was at Great Mistakes in 1980.
That reminds me of the story of a young man who was shipwrecked on an Island with SIX pretty Women. The Women quickly decided who would get him which day of the week and he had one day off. He dove into his duties like any red-blooded hetero Man, but after some time, he began to look forwards to his day off. One day he saw a raft drifting shoreward and he swam out to it. To his surprise, there was a solo Man on board to who he said “HEY Buddy, am I damned glad to see you!” to which the raft’s occupant said “FAAABULOUTH, I’m tho happy to thee another man!” to which the Dude said “OH SHIT, there go my Sundays!
See now if they had used a Marine that boat would be coming back to port with thousands of new dependents on the way. The Navy guy will be hiding under his rack.
Have fun , be safe!
Yep. That about sums it up…Essayons!
Had to look this up – found out “Essayons” means “Let us try”. This is in contrast to the Brandon Administration, whose motto is “Let us fuck up everything we can touch”
P.S.
Fuck Joe Biden
A thief he’s ever been
And seeing how he governs
I think Karl Marx is his twin
Signal can be found in the bar.
Oh, we don’t need to go to the bar. We’re resourceful and have been known to keep libations handy everywhere we go. Besides, we have plumbers…one still, coming right up!
ENGINEERS! If it moves, you shoot it and if it doesn’t move, you load it with C4 and blow it to fuckin’ bits!
Had a great “Ride to remember”, yes bikes and vests.
Roh-Dog:
Remember yesterday’s discussion about Kenneth Harbaugh?
In researching, it looks as if his brother, Kent Harbaugh, Jr. is the one who may own a business in Texas.
Kenneth’s full name is Kenneth Ehlers Harbaugh.
His Brother’s name is Kent Erwin Harbaugh, Jr.
Kenneth’s and Kent’s Mom’s maiden name is Ehlers.
Hope that helps with your research!
Thanks ninj, have the data. May approach this again over the weekend.
Lots of smoke, no fire yet. If you’ve got anything burning maybe solicit Ed to co-conspire?
Whelp, top 50 set of losers again.
Not much rain this week at the GB Compound, but still some in the AO.
The heat can still wipe me out – but hitting the gym to try to recoup strength and endurance. Odd that I can swim an hour in the sun no problem, but work 15 minutes in the sun and I’m toast. Overheating, I suppose.
All is well in this corner of TAH-dom. Hope you all have a great weekend.
Since this is an open thread, I offer the following:
Q: What is the difference between Melania Trump’s panties and J. Edgar Hoover?
A: The FBI kept Hoover in the closet.
First Top Gun found!
H/T to Ex-PH2 for the stick and rudder.
On this day two years ago, 26 August 2021, 13 of our finest warriors perished in Afghanistan.
Read their names, look at their faces and never forget!
They were not drafted or forced to join the military, they instead volunteered to serve this country honorably like many before them.
They answered a higher calling, a sense of duty that many civilians will never understand.
The operation, crammed into the span of a few weeks, was unnecessarily rushed and poorly planned.
Biden asserted he ordered the withdrawal from Afghanistan based on the advice of senior U.S. military advisers. Top Pentagon officials testified under oath that they advised the President to keep 2,500 troops on the ground and were not asked for advice on the withdrawal until August 26 th, directly contradicting the President’s claim.
During the dignified transfer ceremony at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, Biden disrespected these fallen service members & their families by constantly checking his watch.
Biden owns this. He did this. He is alone responsible for these fellow brothers & sisters deaths.
Myself and many other veterans & active duty members not only despise him but are also totally disgusted with Biden for his inept actions in causing this debacle and his disrespect towards those who fell while in the line of duty.
We will always remember……..
Until Valhalla.
(Along with the thirteen killed, forty-five more service members were wounded)
AW1Ed,
I apologize if this post doesn’t fit in with the WOT, but I just needed to post it today.
Skyjumper
Until Valhalla!
Anyone that complains will have to go through me in a challenge of fisticuffs first.
Thank you for doing the rightest of things, SKYJUMPER.
Until The Great AA In The Sky!
Roh,
you can have them after I’m through.
Losing a child because they chose to serve is hard.
Having that child’s death be the direct result of inept politicians playing politics with war brings a level of rage that can destroy the already shattered heart.
SKYJUMPER, and all of you, know this rage. Find a way to channel it so you can stand strong for the families, until they can stand on their own. Pray they find a way.
And we all should never forget the incompetent bastard and his puppet masters responsible for that debacle.
No harm no foul, Sky.
You are 100% correct, SKYJUMPER. The blood of these Warriors is on the hands of biden and him alone. May these Warriors be biden’s escort to the Gates of Hell and throw him upon the fires for his treacherous, murderous soul to burn for all Eternity.
Say Their Names…Be Their Witness.
PRESENT and I award myself Honorary First once again.
((((OVER))))
Watching NBC Today Saturday edition, and the anchors all have their panties twisted over Donald Trump having classified documents in his home, and how this is a threat to National Security. But no problem with passing classified documents over a non secured server that every foreign intelligence agency in the world got to take a look at.
Moreover, the Hildabeast had her minions strip off the classification headers and footers of highly classified documents, send them to her illegal server and email, whereupon her Guatemalan maid was instructed to download and print them. In addition, they were sent to Huma Abedin’s laptop, where they could be read by her MAP husband. But the DOJ was fine with all that, even though some of those classified materials could only be legally accessed and read in a SCIF.
They missed a page!
There is one TX Senator (cornyn of gun control fame) who is feeling a considerable amount of heat. Unfortunately he was re elected the last election so has several year to go in his term. He has already been censured by one GOP county and several more are looking at doing the same. He has had more than on call to resign, I know because I sent one of them.
So, after nine months, your relative went into labor? Was it a boy, girl, or will they be waiting for the child to turn 4 to decide on their gender?
Here’s an odd one – three Dutch commandoes were shot outside their hotel in Indiana. They were here for training.
https://www.reuters.com/world/us/dutch-commandos-wounded-shooting-outside-indiana-hotel-2022-08-27/
One or two is in critical condition; here’s to hoping they make a full and quick recovery, and whoever is responsible is caught.
Indianapolis, of course. Very sad and infuriating but hardly surprising.
Indianapolis is the 12th most dangerous city in the country
