HOUSTON — Houston police said a property owner shot and killed a man Tuesday night on the east side.

According to initial information, The Houston Police Department said the property owner shot a burglary suspect in the 7300 block of Canal Street, which is in Houston’s Greater East End.
HPD tweeted about the shooting at about 9 p.m.

In a follow-up tweet, HPD announced that the man was pronounced dead at an area hospital.
What happened

According to HPD, the owner was checking his property on Canal Street because it had been burglarized in the days prior. They said at least two of the three apartments at the location had been broken into.

When the property owner looked inside one of the buildings, he said he saw the burglary suspect. According to police, while the property owner was calling 911, the suspect pulled out a weapon so the property owner shot him in the abdomen.

Pierce County deputy in ‘grave condition’ after SWAT arrest shooting; suspect is dead

Peter Talbot, Craig Sailor, Stacia Glenn
A planned SWAT operation Tuesday at a mobile home park in Spanaway ended with two Pierce County deputies shot and seriously injured, and the 40-year-old man they were there to arrest killed.

The deputies were transported to St. Joseph’s Medical Center, where Pierce County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Sgt. Darren Moss said one deputy was undergoing surgery and was expected to survive. The other deputy was “gravely injured” and in critical condition.

“It’s very sad. It’s very scary for all of us,” Moss said. “We’re pulling for them and hoping they’ll be okay.”

The man killed during the arrest has not been identified. Tacoma police spokesperson Wendy Haddow said the South Sound Gang Task Force had requested the assistance of the SWAT team to serve an arrest warrant on the man for second-degree assault. The task force is comprised of multiple police agencies, the Department of Corrections and the FBI.

The man had previous felony convictions, Haddow said.

Gun control? It’s the best thing you can do for crooks and gangsters. I want you to have nothing. If I’m a bad guy, I’m always gonna have a gun. Safety locks? You will pull the trigger with a lock on, and I’ll pull the trigger. We’ll see who wins. — Sammy “The Bull” Gravano

Sending a SWAT team to serve a warrant, in a trailer park? You couldn’t wait for the perp to leave and catch him in a less volatile environment? Ah well, I don’t know anything about police work but I guess they do.

Old tanker

Define less volatile environment. Allowing the perp to leave the residence and be out in public able to flee either by vehicle or on foot would be far more hazardous to the public in general. Did you think letting him get to a store or place of work would be better?

Tallywhagger

Home delivery didn’t work out so well but they’re the guys on the scene. They mentioned that it was gang environment, could be that the trailer was the only place where they could catch up with him, alone.

Only 13 trailers in that park with a single street. All trailers on one side of the street (190th St Ct S). Industrial area on the north, vacant lot on the south and a former airport on the east with fencing on those 3 sides. The wooded area to the west across the Pacific Ave S/Hwy 7 is Joint Base Lewis McChord property.

Looks like the KHOU perp found himself up the creek, or in this case, up the canal. Gut shot…yep he suffered from that.

When you going after a known dirtbag, take the whole clan, never know when you might need the backup. Quick and complete recovery to the wounded deputies. Quick trip to Hell for the perp.

Wonder how much the taxpayers are gonna have to pay for the Med-evac? If the citizen had a little more range time, we’d of had another trifecta DRT.

Great that CZ listened to feedback about the features on the Scorpion EVO 3 S2, bad that you can buy new magazines and still use them but not still use your old magazines in the new gun. Wonder if Palmetto State will add the “window” to their AK-V magazines which are much cheaper. Wonder if that new grip is compatible with the older S2 “mini”? Really the only thing I don’t like about it…that and you can’t get a good silencer for it (CZs new reflex no one carries, and the Innovative arms replacement barrel is just not available.)

The one Pierce County Deputy died from his wounds.

Deputy Dominique “Dom” Calata, a member of the SWAT team, having been shot in the head, died at 2:34 p.m. at St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma surrounded by family members and fellow deputies and National Guard members.

Calata has been with the Sheriff’s Department for 6-1/2 years. He was a husband and a father to a 4-year-old child. Troyer said he was a man dedicated to public service.
“He is a big-hearted, great guy, got in his job for the right reasons,” Sheriff Troyer said Tuesday afternoon outside St. Joseph’s Medical Center. “He was well liked by everybody on the department.”

Calata was assigned to the Edgewood detachment and was in the National Guard. Before his time with the Sheriff’s Department, he served five years in the U.S. Army. Calata was a graduate of Pacific Lutheran University.
His body will not be escorted to a funeral home Wednesday because he is an organ donor, something Troyer called “one final selfless act.”
