State senator proposes to rename Ft Bragg…to…Ft Bragg

General Bragg – The other guy, this one was a good general

Poe sends in this message of brilliance. We need leadership like this in Washington.

The Daily Caller reports;

A state senator from Wisconsin proposed that “Fort Bragg” should be renamed “Fort Bragg.”

Republican Wisconsin state Sen. Dale Kooyenga announced in a press release Tuesday his resolution to rename Fort Bragg – originally named after Confederate Army General Braxton Bragg – after Braxton’s cousin, Union General Edward Bragg, according to the Army Times.

Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act in December, one part of which requires the removal of Confederate names from buildings, forts and schools within three years from the start of the 2021 fiscal year. This act reportedly stipulates that a “renaming commission” will look into costs and seek input from stakeholders and communities. It was originally introduced by Democratic Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

“I knew about the looking to change (Fort Bragg’s) name and did some research and thought this was perfect. I think American history is full of ironies, and I thought it was appropriate for a Wisconsin state senator to bring it up,” Kooyenga told the Army Times during an interview.

Kooyenga said in a news release that Bragg fought against the country he pledged allegiance to and it resulted in the needless death of many men.

“In contrast to the man it currently honors, Fort Bragg creates some of America’s greatest leaders, men and women who dedicate themselves to principles that stand in sharp contrast to Braxton Bragg’s principles … In fact, Fort Bragg better resembles the ideals of Wisconsin Gen. Edward S. Bragg, not his cousin,” the news release stated.

Kooyenga hopes this resolution will gain bipartisan support.

The Biden administration is reportedly trying to rename several military forts that are named after Confederate generals. A commission was created to rename all forts that commemorate the Confederacy in February, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Defense.

“I also thank the Congress for establishing this process, and I continue to pledge my personal commitment – and that of the department – to making sure it succeeds. I look forward to seeing the results of the commission’s work in the months ahead,” said Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III.

For those who don’t study Civil War history, Braxton Bragg (the current namesake of the fort to bear the name) was a decorated hero of the Mexican-American War. When the south seceded, he joined the Confederate States Army, and his previous wartime successes were not repeated. He is regarded as one of the South’s worst generals.

Edward Bragg (the proposed namesake of the fort to bear the name) was a Union man through and through. He raised a company of three-year enlistees (the norm was considerably shorter than that) and was elected their captain. “Bragg’s Rifles” were Company E of the 6th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Along with other Wisconsin, Indiana, and Michigan infantry regiments, they would form the “Iron Brigade”. The Iron Brigade would be so named for its strong discipline, its unique uniform appearance, and its tenacious fighting ability. During the war, the Iron Brigade suffered the highest percentage of casualties of any brigade in the war.

Within a year of organizing his company, Edward Bragg was a lieutenant colonel. He saw significant combat action and before the war ended he was promoted substantively (that is to say not a brevet or honorary promotion) to brigadier general and command of the Iron Brigade.

I’ve done some preliminary research and we can play the same renaming trick with Forts Gordon and Rucker. Instead of being named after Confederate John Brown Gordon, Ft Gordon should instead be named for Union General George Henry Gordon. Fort Rucker can be named for General Daniel Henry Rucker instead of Confederate Edmund Rucker.

Nicely done! However, we shouldn’t be wasting our time on pointless, trivial, feel-good bullshit like renaming bases and ships to accommodate the hand-wringing, perpetually offended woketard, anyway.

KoB

Spot on ‘Rod. Agree wholeheartedly on the pointlessness of all of this renaming BS. And not to take anything at all away from the works of the “other” Gnrl Bragg, or the Iron Brigade (FIRST (ht 2 Roh-Dog) Rate troops, all of them (Google Foo Rufus Dawes for an example) but in the grand scheme of things the POS Braxton Bragg was actually one of the best Generals the Union Army had. He did more, by doing nothing, to help the Union win that war than anyone else. I bring attention to his actions (or lack of) on many Battlefields where he snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, ie; Chattanooga, Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain, and Fort Fisher. The South had its share of political Generals, just as the North did. The same political BS that was being used to divide the people of this Country then is being used to divide the people now.

Yes I agree AW1 Rod, but we will not be able to move forward until the idiots are appeased. Who knows, next they may take offense at the Red Light and its connotations to slang term for Natives. I think the esteemed Congressman from the northern state of Wisconsin is on to something… we simply play their game and imply we are changing things while making no effort to actually do anything.

The less effort we expend for these trivial fights, the more we will have for the real ones!

I was at Ft Bliss when they renamed Forrest Rd years ago. You could see the writing on the wall then. It has been a long time coming.

I think changing the namesake without changing the names is a fine way to save money and appease the unappeasable.

Don’t sell the SJW’s short, if they want to be offended, even when what you said is not offensive, they will still want your head on a pike.

Next they’ll be demanding that NO renamed Military Facility have a White Male namesake, snowflake mobs never stop screeching.

So, it wasn’t named after Gump? (Well, you know kids today… )

The Stranger

Well, Mr. Gump WAS named after said General, so there is that.

Great idea but nothing to bragg about.

Slow Joe

This idea will create a big rucker among the woke class.

Their aim is to cause the worst possible damage to our country, and will try their whining best to stop this initiative of renaming forts with Union namesakes.

How about Fort Bergdahl? Word on the street is that he served in Afghanistan with honor and distinction.

KoB

Or as Bergdahl would say, “I leave no man’s behind…”

UpNorth

Poor Bergdahl, must be hard for him on Man-Love Thursday. See what I did there. I’ll be around all week.

MarineDad61

Hack Stone,
Speaking of the real life Fort Bergdahl,
the webpage for the Elko POW*MIA Awareness Ass.
is back from the dead.

Someone paid the internet bill,
but not the interwebby page editor.
No changes on the board page.

Was Sgt At Arms Adams really an E-7?
Was Vice Director Tom Wulf really an O-5 Lt.Col/ Commander?
Is the same well known Ass. Commander from 2019-2020
still the Director, too?
Hmmmm.

The town of Fort Bragg in the PRoC are under pressure to rename as well.

Steeleyi

We should just save ourselves a lot of trouble and number them like New York public schools. Fort 1,2, etc. Camps can be lettered (Camp A, B, C…).

That said in jest, most Army officers and NCOs will go on at least a few staff rides in their time, and it is surreal to travel from Ft Bragg to hear about what a terrible job Gen Bragg did at Ft Fisher, etc.

It’s especially strange since most of the units at Bragg have no Civil War heritage, so most of the streets and buildings are named after WWI and beyond heroes and battles (with the exception of Longstreet Rd, which I thought to my eternal shame was so named because it is a really long street).

xyzzy

Fort 1 can be the Pentagon.

11B-Mailclerk

Nope.

Fort Number Two.

Am I the only one who finds it more than a little ironic that Fauxcahontas is/was the sponsor of the bill?

Poetrooper

See below…

Poetrooper

Ol’ Poe’s been wondering–since the rationale behind this renaming asininity is supposedly that these bases/ships/streets, whatever, are named after racists and supposedly all white people are now considered inherently and irredeemably racist, does this mean nothing in the military can remain named after any white person?

Poetrooper

Oh, and since most American Indian tribes practiced slavery centuries before the arrival of European colonists, then engaged in slave raiding and trading with European slave traders, it would only make sense to rename everything in the military which currently bears a Native-American reference.

Right?

A Proud Infidel®™

Chief Seattle owned Slaves, thus according to the leftards THAT City needs to be renamed as well!

inbredredneck

Now, now, all y’all know that there ain’t no rules for this game. They word “lynch” is hurtful, offensive, mean-spiritied and just downright icky-poo and can never be used again.
Unless, of course, one refers to Loretta Lynch. Somehow, it sounds the same to me.

James R. N.

I previously suggested looking at the Vietnam Wall memorial for honorably serving servicemen/servicewomen with identical surnames as the Confederate leaders who have had forts (etc.) named after them.

So “Provo’s Privvy” is safe?

Thunderstixx

Just when you think it’s safe to go back in the water, someone floats a Baby Ruth…..

Well, at least they wouldn’t have to change the “Fort Bragg” signs at the gates.

Skyjumper

When I was stationed with the 82nd at Bragg many, many years ago as a young buck SGT., it was affectionately know as “Home of the Jumping Junkies”.

Now that has a nice ring to it. (grin)

Skyjumper

For those who want to know the official re-naming commissions name…..well here it is.

“Commission on the Naming of Items of the Department of Defense That Commemorate the Confederate States of America or Any Person Who Served Voluntarily with the Confederate States of America.”

Say that all in one breath. 😉

Well, good for them…
