Open thread
Ex-PH2 asked that I start doing more open threads like I did a week or so ago. My two weeks vacation starts today, so, I’m amenable to the suggestion. I’ve got a new receiver for my AR coming today, so I have some other things I could be doing besides waiting for the next Denial of Service attack (which, by the way, is being reported to the FBI as we speak – another nail in Wickre’s legal coffin). It seems that with every DoS attack, it gets easier to find the perpetrator. But you guys go ahead do what you want with this thread – exchange recipes, post links, bloggers push your blog, whatever. You know how to get a hold of me.

Yes, Ex- I did. Stompy footed fool, would be a nice description of him.
Heard a bunch of blah-blah-blah. Much like yesterday. Something like, “I wanna, so you gotta.” Never imagined that a US President could use the phrase, “I want,” as much as this clown has.
@146:
Montpelier, eh? My folks used to take us up to Bear Lake every couple weeks during the summer. It was maybe a 40-mile drive from Hyrum, where I grew up, in Cache Valley. My dad still lives there.
Beautiful country, that’s for certain.
Myself, after I was discharged I went back home for a couple weeks, but there weren’t any jobs left at the time, so I came back to Maine and stayed. 🙂
Seeing that this is an open discussion panel, I think I’ll post up some links to a project I’ve been working on for some time. Do what you will with them.

Rainy, humid and about 85 here today, so I decided to trim bushes and cut brush – A great workout … Ask George W. My son Dylan decided to do something that most young boys do at some point in their demonic lives. So before he poured milk on to his bowl of Cocco Puffs, he decided to do the most obvious thing. Between both nostrils he skillfully jammed 7 Cocco Puffs staight up those little itzy bitzy air passages.
With horror in his eyes he asked, “U’m surry dud, cun yuu hulp mu?”
Without laughing, I jumped into action and said, “no problem, lay on the floor we have very little time.”
Dylan is great at following orders, he threw himself on the floor face down and I yelled, “no on your back, time is running out!”
He flipped over, I conducted a head tilt and neck lift and added a jaw thrust in for good measure.
Then I said to Dylan in a very calm yet authoritative tone, “time is almost gone, close your eyes and pray to sweet little baby Jesus and promise you will never do this again.”
Then I reached for the milk and filled his mouth up and splashed a fair amount in the obstructed nasal passages.
Dylan coughed those Cocco Puffs straight out and exclaimed, “dad are you crazy you could have killed me!”
A half hour later he is complaiming that he can’t get the taste of Cocco Puffs out of mouth.
I’d love to participate in this open thread but I fear that’s far too much freedom for me. Lord only knows what I might do with it.
Master Chief, you forgot to tell him that if he ever does that again, he’ll have to eat the Coco Puffs that he sneezed out of his nose, boogers and all.
AirCav, it’s open. Say what you will. No holds barred. It is, after all, National Bacon Day, which I have made into National Bacon Weekend, with pictures.

NH SPARKY and AW1 TIM:
Go to my web site (just click on my name) and watch my video of, “DRY VALLEY WALTZ”, which mentions Montpelier, Idaho in the very first verse!
Here are some questions to ask a guy who you suspect of pretending to be a Viet Nam veteran:
What is a “Pink Team”?
What is “QL-1”?
What is “Arc Light”?
What is the difference between “Chieu Hoi” and “Hoi Chanh”?
What is a “Kit Carson Scout”?
What is a “Duster”?
Where is the Hai Vanh Pass?
What was the price of heroin, and how was it packaged?
How many marijuana cigarettes were in a pack, and what was the price?
(No, I never used marijuana or heroin, but I know the answers because I was surrounded by it every day.)
If they claim to have been a Green Beret, ask them,
Where was the headquarters of Combat Control North?
What was “Operation White Star”?
Where was Lang Vei?
What was Nam Dong, and who was Roger Donlon?
Maybe I’ll think of more questions later on.
AW1 TIM:
Since you grew up in Hyrum, utah, there’s a SLIM chance you might know of my Great Aunt Edith Liljenquist, long since deceased.
She was my biological great aunt, for I was adopted when I was a baby.
I never met her (enroute there, I wrecked my car in a snowstorm), but I was told about her.
I was told her son (or nephew?) was a deputy sheriff, but I don’t know his name, and never met him.
I’ve been to the Hardware Ranch, riding on the sled in the snow to feed hay to the elk.
OWB:
What am I doing wrong?
I threaten the government all the time, but they just ignore me.
Remember Ruby Ridge.
Remember Waco.
If it weren’t for Waco, there would have been no bombing in Oklahoma City.
I reckon there’s a whole lot worse yet to come.
There is a guy who popped up on conservative cave forum named Michael David Rawlings. He claims to be a veteran and NCO who ‘put his ass on the line’ but won’t answer where he served, when, his MOS, or even what branch.
Obvious poser, I am sure. He runs a blog- very right wing, very fundamentalist christian in your face type. He’s on several other conservative forums as well.
There is very little about him on line other than his page- no Facebook, no photos, no profiles, etc.
We on CC are looking into this ass, and he is a huge ass, but I am putting the call out for anyone to dig in.
you can check it out here: http://www.conservativecave.com/index.php?action=forum
His screen name is Rawlings.
thanks.

John, my comment was about a federal agency investigating individuals who make threats via electronic media against another individual.
Well, dude has apparently moved on, so I won’t get another chance to chat with him, damnit. When I’d seen him before, we were always to dinner or something (we’re on vacation in Asheville), so I hadn’t wanted to derail all that, but I guess I should have. Last night here, so we’ll see if he does show up again.
Dude was actually missing his lower right leg, so the wheelchair part was legit. I was just suspicious because I know Vietnam vets as a whole did far better than their peers who didn’t serve, so a homeless/transient Vietnam vet seemed far less likely than a homeless/transient liar. No special bling on his hat, so nothing to analyze there…
Thanks to everyone for the suggested questions, though – I especially liked Combat Historian’s suggestion about which Corps he was in – I was planning to start with his dates of service, then ask him where he was stationed, and then “which Corps was that?” And then the whole open-ended, just let him talk thing…
If I get lucky and he’s there before we leave, I’ll let you know how it pans out…
SGT E – If you see him again, ask him if he was drafted, when he got his draft notice, and where he was inducted.
Just searched “bodaprez” on Yahoo… This Ain’t Hell was the first two listings!
Top–we are trendsetters in our own little dickweed way.
I looked up “BODAPREZ”, but I guess I don’t get the joke.
Are you all talking about Barry Soetoro, a.k.a., Barack Hussein Obama II, a.k.a., Bari Malik Shabazz, a.k.a., Steven Dunham (or whoever he is)?
I never watch those speeches on television.
With one exception – – – ,
I did watch the television broadcast of President George W. Bush addressing a joint session of Congress immediately after the attacks of Tuesday 11 September 2001.
I miss butterbeans and Bama-style mustard-vinegar based BBQ!
John, it’s something I cooked up a while back because I just don’t like Obama enough to use his name all the time. Here it is broken into its parts.
BO = Barack Obama
da = the
prez = president
It’s just my shorthand. I think he’s an idiot, and I don’t care who knows it.
@168,
John, was your aunt Liljenquist an elementary school teacher? If so I knew her and so did my sisters. There was a “Miss Liljenquist” who taught at Lincoln Elementary School in Hyrum. She lived across the street and a couple houses up from us on Maine St. Very lovely woman. Patience of a saint, too!
I was up to hardware Ranch once or twice a month, pretty much year round for various reasons. Mostly we didn’t go that far up the canyon, though, as we’d go fishing at a couple spots along the river a couple times a week.
Hyrum, and those years, were a great place/time to be a kid.
@170.
Is your book(s) in print?
Green Thumb: sounds very similar to what I’ve heard referred to as Carolina style (vinegar and pepper based sauce, no tomato or sugar/molasses). Only kind of BBQ I particularly care for.
Butterbeans (undried limas) are rather difficult to come by out of the Deep South – but dried limas cooked with smoked pork, onion, and a bit of garlic and black pepper come close. Takes a while, but one of the best (and easiest) dished to make anywhere you can get smoked pork hocks or neckbones.
Green Thumb, one is, the other I’m doing the formatting for print. Do you want the links? I’ll get the formatting completed this weekend on #2.
Bush Brothers carries baby butter beans, speckled butter beans and large butter beans.
Fresh, unshelled are hard to come by. You have to grow them. But you could get either white emergo beans or fava beans from North Bay Trading.

I consider Lima Beans “Butter Beans”.
I get the difference but old habits die hard.
EX-PH2 – I am a closet Bibliophile. I would love a book (and I will pay for it), but I would like an autograph.
Old habit.
My reading (recreational) habits vary, but I am game to give it a shot.
NC BBQ has no flavor.
Just an observation.
Reminds me of Hawaiian BBQ but with vinegar.
Ex-PH2:
You wrote a book?
What’s the name of it, and where can I get a copy?
How would I contact you so I could get an autographed copy?
My younger sister, Zanne Serig, wrote a children’s novel, “THROUGH THE SMALL DOOR”, and a sequel, “IN CHARM’S WAY”.
An Internet search will find them for you.
As for me, I’ve written some bad Czechs, which bounced, because those Czechoslovakian juvenile delinquents were using a trampoline in Prague.
Yep, I just now made up that joke all by myself!
Yuk! Yuk!
Hardee Har Har!
AW1 Tim:
I don’t know anything about my Great Aunt Edith Liljenquist, for I never met her.
I was told I should look her up, because she was a good Mormon (I’m a convert), and was an authority on our family’s history.
Green Thumb–when I’m too lazy to make my own rub and sauce, I get a decent dry to put on, smoke the ribs for about 5 hours, then put some Stubb’s Spicy BBQ sauce on for the last 20-30 minutes.
Turned out pretty well if I do say so myself. Everyone here certainly enjoyed them.
Stubbs?
Sell out.
Just kidding.
In the Navy…..!
Gt, you gotta read Ex- books dude come on they rock
GT: to each his own. I’m perfectly happy with just plain brazed pork ribs, or ribs seasoned with a good dry rub.
I simply don’t care for the combination of meat + sweet. As a result, I don’t much care for most BBQ, honey glazed ham, Hawaiian pineapple glazed ham, or sweet & sours (or many other oriental meat dishes that are doused in soy or teriyaki, which each have a sweet taste to me). I can tolerate bulgoki because the garlic and spice for me mostly cancels out the sugar – but I still generally prefer different Korean dishes.
Smoked, salted, or spicy? Different story.
I’m a spicy guy. My rub has no sugar in it. The sauce has only a little brown sugar, but more than a little cayenne.
Too much for the kids to handle. In fact, most of the time I take one of the racks (I make at least two full racks) and use something more generic/plain.
Throw in some mac and cheese, some BBQed ears of corn and onion, and you got yourself a pretty good meal.
None of you guys have tried a smokey mesquite rub for ribs?
Try marinating pork ribs in pineapple pulp overnight, not for seasoning, but because the pineapple tenderizes the meat, then sear and add your barbecue seasoning.
John Mallernee, I have two books out now, but only one is in print. The other will be in print by Monday. Then I’ll have Jonn send you the info.
Ditto, GT. Hang in there until Monday. And we’ll figure out how to get signed copies to you.
Enjoy the holiday, too.
Mustard-Vinegar is not sweet.
Its heat.
@186.
You too.
Standing by.
Ex-PH2:
Thanks!
I look forward to purchasing my own autographed copies.
They’ll be a real keepsake.
Shucks, I might even actually READ them.
(I haven’t the foggiest idea what your books are about, because, so far as I know, you’ve never mentioned them.)
A little note on weather in the western hemisphere of the world:
An unusual cold snap is in place in Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay Chile, and Argentina. There is a heavy snow again in the Atacama Desert in Peru, the driest place in the world. Pictures show at least 18 inches. 2 years ago, 30 inches of snow fell in the same area and in other places in South America, including snow on the beaches of Brazil.
This year’s bout of snow and cold in South America has resulted in the death of a lot of livestock including llamas, sheep, goats, chickens, and cattle, and people: in Peru, 33,000 impacted by loss of housing; deaths from cold exposure: 7 in Peru, 4 in Bolivia, 2 in Paraguay. The mines in Peru have been shut down, and supply traffic can’t get through because the roads aren’t plowed out. The temperatures have been as low as 17F. That’s bitterly cold, even where I live and I have a furnace.
And last year, on 7/21/12, I made a note: Syrian government may fall soon; if so, Russia loses a big arms market.
Hmmm…. who knew?
Ranger Appreciation golf tournament put on by Gallant Few took place Sat in Savannah, Had a blast. Great turn out…boocooo hero’s there. Had a big time at Kevin Barry’s Friday night on Riverstreet. Hear is the face book link to tournament with some pic’s

So today is Sunday and not because my guilt ridden Irish Catholic sensibilities forced me to go, my son is preparing for First Holy Communion and the experience will serve him well … so we went to mass. Mass went well, although Dylan monkeyed around way too much. After mass we lit candles for Grandpa Peter (my father) and Grandma Joyce (my wife’s mom who recently died). Dylan looked at the candles and with a long sigh he asked, “dad, do all Soldiers go to heaven?” Realizing had I only one shot at this memorable fatherly response, I took his hand and we started for the parking lot. As we cleared the crowd and we had more privacy I said, “most Soldiers do go to heaven, especially if they served with honor, they remained loyal, were professionals on the field and off, and they were courageous in thought and action. And if they died as warriors in the fight, Angels escort them directly to heaven to be greeted by St. Peter. I believe the US military is well represented in heaven because we fight for what is right. Dylan nodded and looked at me for more. I continued, “Dylan when fallen warriors, veterans, and their families go to heaven, they muster up again with their units and buddies. I can’t see it any other way … this is what I believe … but I am not certain only God knows. I believe the USMC guards the gates and perimeter of heaven and is the first to respond if evil tries to get in. The US Army organizes and operates heaven like a base because it will comfort the warriors, veterans, and families … and they deserve that. The USAF flies cover over Heaven, again protecting from evil. And the USCG and Navy roams the seas surrounding Heaven searching for good souls who may have lost their way. This is what I hope and this is what I believe … it only makes sense!” Dylan looked at my and said, “you are right dad and when I get to Heaven, I… Read more »
Well done!
@192 – I believe you hit that one out of the park.
Well done, Master Chief.
Bravo Zulu MCPO NYC USN (Ret.)
Very well put. For a Marine LOL
I went to the Auburn-Washington State football game yesterday, with Mrs. Insanity, my daughter, her husband, and my 3-year-old grandson. While the band played the National Anthem, I realized nobody had reminded the little dude what to do. I glanced out of the corner of my eye; he was standing straight and still with his hand over his heart.
I was overcome. Just wanted to hug him and his parents. They are doing a great job with him.
Just saw an ad for a DVD set for the TV series “China Beach” and was reminded that both it and “Tour of Duty” are among my all time favorite shows. They were very different, of course, but they signaled something we had needed for too long – the country was finally able to discuss Viet Nam openly.
On a historic note, Richard III of England, the last Plantagenet king whose remains were recently discovered buried under a parking lot where Greyfriaris’ Abbey once was located, was found by researchers to have been infested with roundworms.
Thus, as Hamlet said, a peasant may eat fish that ate of a king.
Hi all,
Figure this was a good place to ask- what Stolen Valor articles include in the comments the perp themselves or their family/friends, come to defend their “honor”?
I know of William Blake, and maybe one or two others. Those articles have always benn the funniest, IMHO. Maybe that could be an additional category to tag the article with, once they show up in the comments?
Anyways, thanks for your help, I need. Good laugh!
