You know who we really need to worry about? You right-wing veteran maniacs!

| April 13, 2009

UPDATE:  Looks like Ms. Malkin is none too pleased about the report either.

That, according to our own Department of Homeland Security.  You should start by reading this report from DHS, entitled  Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment.”

The essential premise of this document is straight forward enough:

The DHS/Office of Intelligence and Analysis (I&A) has no specific information that domestic rightwing  terrorists are currently planning acts of violence, but rightwing extremists may be gaining new recruits by playing on their fears about several emergent issues. The economic downturn and the election of the first African American president present unique drivers for rightwing radicalization and recruitment.

Now, one of the specific groups it is worried about is “Disgruntled Military Veterans.”

DHS/I&A assesses that rightwing extremists will attempt to recruit and radicalize returning veterans in order to exploit their skills and knowledge derived from military training and combat. These skills and knowledge have the potential to boost the capabilities of extremists—including lone wolves or small terrorist cells—to carry out violence. The willingness of a small percentage of military personnel to join extremist groups during the 1990s because they were disgruntled, disillusioned, or suffering from the psychological effects of war is being replicated today.

Now, just in case you question whether there sufficient numbers of these people to be considered an actual threat, DHS has kindly included some references to such people:

— (U) After Operation Desert Shield/Storm in 1990-1991, some returning military veterans—including Timothy McVeigh—joined or associated with rightwing extremist groups.

— (U) A prominent civil rights organization reported in 2006 that “large numbers of potentially violent neo-Nazis, skinheads, and other white supremacists are now learning the art of warfare in the [U.S.] armed forces.”

— (U//LES) The FBI noted in a 2008 report on the white supremacist movement that some returning military veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have joined extremist groups.

Ok, let’s start at the onset by admitting that there are some real asshats in the military.  No doubt about it.  McVeigh was clearly one of them.  It should be remembered too that he didn’t get into SF, because they correctly identified him as one of them.

What pisses me off about this whole document is two things.  First it once again settles into that pattern we see all the time of stereotyping veterans coming as the disgruntled types who could go sketchy on a brown person anytime.  Gee, I wonder how they get that impression?  Could be from all the liars over at IVAW telling everyone under the sun how they were trained to kill only brown people, how Drill Sergeants beat it into them that brown people were the enemy, etc etc etc.  Call it the Geoff Millard School of military science.  Mind you, if that stuff happened it was very limited in scope, but you wouldn’t know that from the panelists at Winter Soldier.

But Part Two of what pisses me off is the second bullet up there, to wit:

A prominent civil rights organization reported in 2006 that “large numbers of potentially violent neo-Nazis, skinheads, and other white supremacists are now learning the art of warfare in the [U.S.] armed forces.”

And what “prominent civil rights organization” are they citing to?  The Southern Poverty Legal Center, SPLC.  I’m not going to go too far into SPLC, but everything you need to know about them should be summed up by this: last year the SPLC listed The American Legion as a hate group because of its position on Immigration.  The American Legion even (GASP!) gave an award to Lou Dobbs.  You bastards!

To the SPLC anyone who doesn’t believe that our Southern Border should be manned by Walmart greeters handing out happy stickers and water while welcoming them to our country is a racist, a nativist, a white supremacist.  So, if The American Legion is a hate group, and the DHS agrees with the SPLC, seemingly enough to cite to them anyway, can we assume that we should root out all those bastards in the military who belong to The American Legion?

How big a problem is rightwing extremism in the military?  Well, the FBI report alluded to above shows the shocking (SHOCKING!) statistic that 203 members of white supremacist organizations claimed to have been veterans.  203.  CLAIMED they were veterans.

(U//FOUO) Figure 1 illustrates the distribution of the 203 individuals among major categories of white supremacist extremism. Although the count of 203 includes persons with unverified military backgrounds—some of whom may have inflated their resumes with fictional military experience to impress others within the movement—this number is helpful in identifying those groups which most attract and value military experience.

Even one lunatic in our military is one too many for me.  There is no place in our military for racism, particularly when you have to rely to the man (or woman) on your right and left to stay alive.  But, this seems just a bit more bark than bite, no?  203 people is barely enough to make up a plussed-up company, and I would be willing to bet that the vast majority of this 203 is either completely full of shit with regard to their service, or was some sort of REMF Pogue.

I find it interesting that SPLC hasn’t noted any of the other gangs which have been encouraging enlistment in the military, you know gangs like:

the Bloods, Crips, Black Disciples, Gangster Disciples, Hells Angels, Latin Kings, The 18th Street Gang, Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13), Mexican Mafia, Nortenos, Surenos, Vice Lords, and various white supremacist groups, have been documented on military installations both domestically and internationally.

Yeah, I wouldn’t worry about any of those groups, the ones to really look out for are the people who believe in law and order, and that immigration should be achieved in the traditional manner, rather than just coming across and waiting for the Senate to approve it retro-actively.

Morris Dees and his gang of short bus race-pimp morons called the United Daughters of the Confederacy a ‘hate group’. The UDC…a hate group…really…this is a bunch of 80 year old grannies who sit around in big ugly hats and hand out scholarships while drinking tea and eating tiny sandwiches that have cucumbers and other nasty shit on them. That’s some seriously insidious shit right there, man…of course the sandwiches ARE made on white bread and slathered in mayonaise…

Raoul

Wolverines….

Raoul

Because Morris like bowies and not Columbian ties he’ll keep Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) out of it.

Can’t spend that 501(3)c cash if you piss off the Bloods or Crips.

Raoul

There are 24 million veterans and they obssess about 203.

Claymore

…Dees also lumped in the Sons of Confederate Veterans with the UDC. Having spent some time in with the SCV (Robert E. Lee Camp 726, Alexandria VA) I can tell you that the biggest thing we attacked was a plate full of spaghetti once a month, followed up with the ritual burning of a few Conn shade wrapped cancer sticks. Our motto; meet…eat…and retreat. The most radical part of our meetings were voting on what restaurant in Old Town we were going to invade next month and making sure the bulk of the leadership were home before it got too dark to see the road.

Doesn’t this crap risk becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy of sorts?

Couple of aspects in support of my above question: I’ve seen with my own eyes (and experience) what can happen when these labels get picked up by the great unwashed – vets get treated differently.

As if real readjustment isn’t hard enough toss in the mild paranoia that come with the odd looks and distancing behaviors.

Only indirectly related (I think) could we not add the general anti-military bent of many? I suspect that there is already a genuine fear of combat vets. This is throwing fuel on the fire.

So while… can we assume that we should root out all those bastards in the military who belong to The American Legion? seems mildly silly, it may also be prescient.

Dave Thul

First off, I assume that there is a corresponding left wing extremist pamphlet as well that talks about left wing veterans and how dangerous they are.

Second, the phrase ‘includes persons with unverified military backgrounds—some of whom may have inflated their resumes with fictional military experience to impress others within the movement’, isn’ that a pretty good definition of the IVAW?

Dave Thul

And apparently DHS didn’t get the message that vets aren’t ‘suffering from the psychological effects of war”, they are suffering from the effects of overseas contingency operations.
If they are suffering bad enough, they could go to the extreme and initiate a man caused disaster.

Raoul

Dave Thul,

There are the “hit squads” Jesse MacBeth talked about in IVAW.

Dave Thul-

ROTFLMAO!! Have you been talking to Raoul? 🙂

I have no combat experience to claim ill affects only COW affects so, don’t push me, POTUS who needs TOTUS aka the COW the A2(appeaser/apologist) President!

Shit fellas…All of this talk of the military training the troops to kill the little Brown Skin people makes me just a teensy bit nervous because with my luck,I’ll run into some joker who mistakes RED for BROWN…

I’m jus gonna change my name to Airborne Albino, just to be safe!!! *snerk*

It’d be great if you had enough integrity to admit the following: The SPLC never listed, and does not list today, the American Legion as a hate group. Perhaps you should study up a little before launching your little attacks on us. We wrote about the legion because of its gross distortion of facts about immigrants. We did not list it as a hate group.

Jonn wrote: It’d be great if you had enough integrity to admit that you used the coded language that you normally reserve for the hate groups that you claim to investigate. From the SPLC’s specious refutation of the American Legion’s pamplet;

Yeah, we all know what you mean when you write “nativist” – the code of the disingenuous Left for racist. And then drag up something from frickken 1937 to prove your point, f’Pete’s sake.

But, you know what’s racist? Immediately interviewing members of the American Legion who happen to be of Latino extraction. How many Irish members did you interview? Do you know how many Irish illegal immigrants are in this country? According to the LA Times, 50,000 in 2007. But you didn’t think of that, did you? After all, if you found Irish illegal immigrants, you couldn’t cry “Racist!”, could you?

You need to add “racist tool” to your autobiography at Wikipedia.

“The SPLC never listed, and does not list today, the American Legion as a hate group.”

Sorry I was unable to respond earlier Mark, I was at a baseball game. Since you never listed The American Legion as a hate group, perhaps you could explain how the article I linked shows up on a page clearly listed as “Hate Watch.” Do groups that are not “hateful” in your opinion end up on the “Hate Watch”? How many times has The American Legion showed up on your “Love Watch”?

UpNorth

Imagine, the SPLC thinks the Minutemen are racists too. What exactly, are the Legion’s “gross distortion of facts”? That those who cross the southern border of this country are overwhelmingly non-white? I hate it when that happens, but it is a fact that very, very few blond-haired, blue-eyed Swedes enter the US, legally or illegally across the southern border.

Claymore

Billy Mays here…you’ve ordered the Big City Sliders in droves, and washed your stains out with Oxy Clean, now you too can keep track of all your brown-people kills with the Hate Watch! It records all your head shots, throat slashes and even reminds you of when to renew your American Legion dues, but best yet, it’s a precision time piece with 28 jewel movement! Made in Switzerland…you know those Swiss, they always make great stuff! So order now and we’ll throw in a lifetime membership to the NRA and a 12 month supply of ShamWows, FREE! Call now!

The Sniper

I remember when I was an albino black panther in the army SEALS we were indoctrinated into wanting to kill everyone who didn’t look like us… which in our case was jsut about everybody because we were all albinos of African descent. I actually had to stop one of our own members from killing himself when he looked in a mirror because he thought he saw a black guy or maybe a white guy or maybe just another albino.

It was hell, man.

I’d read it if one person can find an original government source link for the document. I can’t and I am seriously doubting the origins of the paper. It’s not classified and so it would or should be easy to provide a link. Sorry, but these things take many months to produce and I doubt it was commissioned in 2009 if at all. It actually looks like a fraud to me. The whole thing has too good of a specific timing to infuriate and scare the right wing. Isn’t anyone looking at the timing and the content. Perfect marketing. I doubt the origins.

Muffler

TSO:

I would like a link to the confirmation by DHS. Then I’ll go with it.

Muffler

So some unnamed source is providing support for an unclassified document that was sent to every police force in the country. I have looked at many DHS reports and this one isn’t exactly to spec in design, font, references and citings.

Sorry, but you probably wouldn’t just accept MSM references to unnamed sources and I don’t either. I haven’t seen a single references from any sources other that of a few and these are right leaning sources. I would expect this would hit the left wing sources pretty quick since it adds fuel to the fire. Sorry not buying it. I still reserve judgment.

In the last few days with the pirate thing we had many stating with FACT they they new what was going down and they were inaccurate or completely wrong.

@Muffler: I understand your scepticism. Mine stems from the fact that I’ve yet to see a denial of this document from the fedgov. As soon as someone from The 0!’s administration denies it, I’ll be 100% certain it’s solid gold. Until then we have only such “highly suspect” sites like The Washinton Times saying such shocking things as,

“A footnote attached to the report by the Homeland Security Office of Intelligence and Analysis defines ‘rightwing extremism in the United States’ as including not just racist or hate groups, but also groups that reject federal authority in favor of state or local authority.”

Shocking! That MUST include the legislatures of 30 or so states that either are considering or have already passed bills reaffirming the 10th Amendment! After all, they are “groups” and have stated (or discussed) limits on federal authority…

Vic

meanwhile, while the VFW are the new threat, Obama, DHS, CIA/FBI are aggressively hiring Muslims – who have proven to be a security threat and who’s very ideology requires them to fight the U.S., and allows them to lie in doing so

David

Hmmm, it just struck me that perhaps this is a sign that The 0! is more like Lincoln than I had thought. After all, the characterization of “groups that reject federal authority in favor of state or local authority” as right-wing extremists WOULD have to include state legislatures that have specifically rejected unconstitutional intrusion into State authority, and thus such “extremist groups” could concieveably be dealt with as Lincoln did to the Maryland legislature that failed to resoundingly support Lincoln’s desire to make war on the Southern states.

Is federal military arrest of State legislatures possible? Is the 10th Amendment deader than a doornail? Since Mr. Lincoln’s War the answers to those questions has been a firm “Yes!” That a reaffirmation of the 10th Amendment is seen as “right wing extremism” is really nothing new in the age of the rejection of the Constitution.

muffler

David:

I agree with you on the non-denial, but neither a non-denial or an unnamed source is good enough to make an accusation. I thought we learned this over the last 20 years or so that unnamed sources and hear say are usable by both sides to further agendas. Sorry, but nothing is proven.

I wait with eyes open for some substantiation.

Jonn wrote: Yeah, I’ve seen how open your eyes are since you’ve scrolled past the WashTimes link no less than three times. I wonder what kind of substantiation it would take to convince you. Muffler-
(nice name by the way, trying to keep the noise level down of all us soon to right-wing extremists)

I didn’t go all the way down to checking the font size, but you can read DHS Maritime Security Strategy on their website and see the same format.
http://www.dhs.gov/xlibrary/assets/HSPD13_MaritimeSecurityStrategy.pdf

Furthermore, had you paid attention to the details, you would have noticed that this report was an advisory from DHS to local law enforcement organizations. They customarily give the report to the police several days before releasing it to the public.

In fact, the funny thing here is that every time the Bush administration releases a security advisory like this, the MSM screamed that the White House was hyping the terror threat to take news coverage off something else.

Let’s see, what event might be happening this week that would involve a large number of right wing conservative activists that the White House might like to portray as not news worthy? Gosh, I know there was something. Well, I have to make some more Tea Party signs now, but if I think of anything I will let you know.

Well, during the Bush era and the warrantless wiretapping and violations of Constitutional protection against warrantless searches, the neo-coonservatives were fond of proclaiming “if you’ve done nothing wrong, then you’ve nothing to worry about”.

Shouldn’t that same mindset hold true today? Or has the morbidity of hypocrisy come home to the practitioners of that black craft?

So, what’s the problem? Take it like real men and quit whining.

Michael S.

Just love how people don’t understand the obvious … Unclassifed is not the same thing as Not classified. There is a subtle, but real difference. More importantly, this document is Classifed as U/FOUO (Unclassified/For Official Use Only), which, if you bothered to read the security footnote, states directly … NOT FOR RELEASE TO THE PUBLIC. If someone were to post this document on the DHS or any other official government website, it would be a major security violation and people would lose clearances and jobs. Is it real? IMHO it more than likely is and was probably intentionally leaked.

I take the Washington Times with the naming of a source as a confirmation. I did miss that reference.

In the meantime the name Muffler has to do with finding a name that wasn’t taken by the many registrations I have. It is related to the part of an automobile or a neck scarf and nothing more. Sorry to disappoint you. Another conspiracy it isn’t.
