One of Jonn Lilyea’s favorite songs.
RIP John. You served your country well.
Sigh.
Thanks for this.
RIP SFC Lilyea
Thank you Dave. We miss you, Jonn
Thank you for putting this up here for us.
Rest in Peace Jonn.
There is no greater honor than being interred at Arlington National Cemetery…
Rest in Peace, SFC Lilyea…
RIP, Jonn.
I didn’t know Jonn but here I sit in tears. RIP Sir!
Thank you, Mr. Sharkman, I love this song.
I once did have a comrade,
No one better you would find.
Then the drum called us to battle,
And He had marched there, at my side ,
(In perfect pace and stride.) 2x
A bullet came a-flying,
Is it meant for me or you?
Then it had swept his, life away,
Now he lies here at my feet, As
(If it was a part of me.) 2x
Yet he reached out his hand to me,
As I strive now to reload.
“I cannot give you my hand, right now
May you rest there, in eternal life
( My good comrade.”) 2x
Although we never met, I will miss him.
Fair winds, following seas my friend.
regards to Jonn –
he is in good company now
Thank you, Dave.
Indeed – thanks, Dave. From myself – and I daresay from all of us who could not be there today.
Thanks, Dave. Damn, it got dusty in here. Rest in Peace, Jonn.
Rest in Peace
Infantry weather for a career Infantryman’s funeral. That’s kinda apropos, actually.
Family obligations made it impossible for me to be there today to say goodbye. But you were definitely in my thoughts, Jonn.
It was my honor to have known you. I wish I’d have had time to get to know you better.
Hope to see you again after God deems my time here is also done. Until then: rest easy my friend. Rest easy.
I too wish I could have been there today to say goodbye.
But we will all meet again.
Likewise. I tried hard to be there, but I couldn’t make it work.
We’ll meet again, for sure, and we’ll then have so many stories to share, and laughs.
May the Angels of His Mercy bring solace to all his family and friends.
Thanks for posting this. Enjoy your well earned rewards in the hereafter.
Rest in Peace, Jonn Lilyea.
(Thanks for the video, Dave.)
I thank God for creating you John and I am so grateful for your service to the world. You will never be forgotten and your good works shall be carried forward. May the angels guard and comfort your family forever.
Fair winds and following seas, Jonn.
Rest in Peace Jonn. I’ll pay a visit in Oct. Thank you for sharing the video Dave.
Rest easy warrior! Thank you for your service and for ‘This ain’t hell’.
Rain on Jonn’s funnel day as is most any day in the Infantry (so I’ve been told) seem apropos.
Just my thought, two things:
It’s tears of joy from Heaven knowing that Jonn is with everyone there.
And tears of sorrow from Heaven, for all of us, down here, that will miss him.
RIP Jonn
Until Valhalla…
Rest in Peace my friend. You are missed.

New Zealand Infantry Haka
I think Jonn would approve.
God saw him getting tired, a cure was not to be.
He wrapped him in his loving arms and whispered ‘Come with me.’
He suffered much in silence,
his spirit did not bend.
He faced his pain with courage, until the very end.
He tried so hard to stay with us, but his fight was not in vain,
God took him to His loving home and freed him from the pain.

Jonn: Husband, Father, Grandfather, Son, Friend, Soldier.
Rest In Peace, Warrior.
Thank You so much, Dave, for sharing this with the TAH family.
Jonn provided all of us with something, even if, for some, it was just a place to occasionally visit and maybe have a laugh. For many of us, TAH has been much more than that. Of the handful of Jonn’s many memorable posts, there are two that stand out for me. The first (“No Man Left Behind”) he put up in 2008 and republished annually on October 3rd. The link is below, and what follows is a single paragraph from it:
“I stop and visit with Tim at Arlington at least twice every year on Veterans’ Day and Memorial Day and every Christmas when I make my rounds there. And every day I give thanks for men like Tim Martin who are willing to put everything on the line for the rest of us. But today, especially, I save for Tim. And for Linda and their girls who sacrificed everything for us as well.”

The second of Jonn’s many great posts that I want to mention is also about loss. It is also about anger. Regulars will recognize it immediately:

Catch you later on Sicily North
RIP Jonn, and sorry I missed this. I was only a couple miles away, pressing my Blues after ensuring my marchers were good for the Full Honors missions they filled in for. Had a copy of the MA Final on my desk but didn’t look over it like I used to. Sure enough, Charlie Company laid SFC Jonn Lilyea to rest this morning in Section 57. I’ll be walking in tomorrow to pay my respects. Rest well, you deserve it.
And they did fine job. Perfect and professional. Zero discrepancies.
BZ to entire Arlington Team.
Very impressive.
MCPO OUT.
God Speed and Fare Well SFC Jonn Lilyea. Peace be to your Family. For who you were and what you meant to all of us, we Salute. Thanks for this Dave. Don’t tell anybody but we all appreciate you. And no it’s not the dust in here. jc nsnr
Tip a few with all the warriors in Valhalla. You earned it.
Tears were in my eyes when taps were being played, but I have to admit a smile came to my lips when Dave posted about Marine One flying over.
Rest in peace, SFC Jonn Lilyea…you were one helluva a guy.
Thanks for sharing the video Dave, you’re one helluva a guy also.
Rest In Peace, John. One of my earliest blogging friends. The world is a bit poorer today.
Bang the drum slowly.

You rest in peace now Jonn, you have completed your duty. First volley got me. Thanks Dave
Rest in peace, John.
I live in Quantico and had hoped to get to meet him at the restaurant before I retired, but I missed the chance. Although I never did meet him, I got to know him through the website and a few emails we shared. I do feel the loss as others have said. I pray for the family and all those who are affected by his passing.
rest well deserved warrior. The second soldier I knew who was buried this week. Heavy heart

Rest in Peace Jonn Lilyea.
You were one of a kind. The world will be a little less interesting without you in it.
Farewell, Jonn – with the best among us gone, when the less of us gather, as we can, we’ll hoist a tankard, saying “there was a man.”
