The folks at Military Phonies send us their work on this fellow Gary Erdman. Apparently, he did have four years in Marine Corps, but that wasn’t good enough for him. Here’s what he claims to have earned in his claimed ten years of service;
From a really sad copy of his DD214 that the NPRC sent, through all of the smudges, we can sort out what does and doesn’t track;
He spent four years on active duty, he was an ammunition storage specialist, not a sniper, not Recon, unless he reconned the snackbar for his fellow POGs.
He may be home from a lot of places, but Iraq isn’t one of those places. No scuba training, no airborne training, no combat action ribbon. No valor medals.

Sparks: It’s a requirement, found in chapter 6, page 33 of the ‘Scumbag Poser Manual’. A moustache is also a requirement. A motorcycle and leather jacket, while not mandatory, are highly recommended. Also, again while not mandatory, the jacket, if worn, should have NLT 22 patches, medals or decals. Not 21, but 22 or more. One of those patches MUST be the POW.

An actual personal total of eight CARs is a much more reasonable number for a Marine. A lot of Marines have eight CARs. A LOT OF THEM.
As we all know, accuracy regarding personal awards is very important to Marines, so I’m glad that we got the CAR count correct (as I’m sure your uncle remembers, ‘CAR count correct’ is also known as “The Big Three C’s” during uniform inspections out in the Fleet Marine Force).

Cape May County Sheriff Gary Schaffer announced that Corrections Officer Gary E. Erdmann, Jr. was named Cape May County Corrections Officer of the Year at the 15th Annual New Jersey County Jail Wardens Association’s Training Conference on October 3, 2012.
Officer Erdmann, who became a Cape May County Corrections Officer in 2005, also served in the United States Marine Corp for ten years. Was that something they did in 80s/90s and then stopped?
Or was it something the Marines never did?
Name tags are only worn by certain billets, typically instructors in military schools, drill instructors, maybe recruiters and MSG (Marine Security Guard – the Marines at the embassies).
They are NOT a part of the typical Marine’s uniform.

Dave I was on the Nassau. We started out on the Ponce, but the well-deck gate fell off so they transferred us to the Nassau. We probably bumped into each other. I don’t have face book but I’ll get you my email address somehow. I was too short for the next float. My first one was on the Inchon in 82. When I got back from the 84 cruise SSgt Russell got me hooked up with a job as a troop-handler for my last 4 months and I transferred over to 1/8. Semper Fi Dave. Mike
Dave, I had to pull my seabag out to check the order of the ships on the floats I made (I marked up my seabag with every place I went, as most of us did), but I never could keep that stuff straight over the years. I always forgot if we started on the Nassau and then switched over to the Ponce, or vice versa, but according to my seabag we started on the Ponce and switched to the Nassau before leaving Morehead City. We were actually all loaded up (personnel-wise), and you probably recall this I am sure, but they were loading up amtracs in the well-deck area when the Ponce’s tailgate fell off. My memory is a bit clouded here, but before we even started stowing our gear they transferred us to the Nassau.. We (3/8) were a Helo-Assault company so they were limited as to the type of ship we could be transported on I guess.
Ya, that was some funny shit. The whole back of the ship fell off. Some people were cross decked to the Nassau and the Saginaw.
The ones that were left missed out on freezing their ass off in Norway. Fun times for all bro.

In the end you will find the records posted are his official records. The information at militaryphony.com is accurate, and sadly, your uncle embellished his career when he had plenty to be proud of as it was.
If you or anyone else wants to order his records you can do so. They are public records. Simply Google how to order military records, fill out the form, they will send them free of charge.
My guess is her uncle is going to step up and admit he embellished a perfectly honorable career. He earned an EGA and I still have faith in what that means.

We have had them post as if they were someone that actually served with them and try to defend themselves.
I have seen cases when the wife/family believed what they had been told for decades. Honestly, it turns my stomach. After the shock and denial goes away, the truth is all thats left.
Your uncle earned an Eagle Globe and Anchor, very few people can say that. He holds the title Marine…I have faith that he will step up and act like it.
His service was completely honorable as best I can tell from his records. He has no reason to embellish anything…yet he obviously did.

You know I have to say if somebody would’ve approached me like this I would’ve been much calmer. I love my uncle more than anything and I have so much pride in the man he is. I am his niece and not him just to make that clear, he has protected this family, and loved me like his own daughter when I lost both my parents, both him and my aunt helped my grandparents raise me. I genuinely feel the need just like anybody if it was their family member to always have his back and defend him, if he was wrong I have faith in who he is as a man to step up and keep his honor because that’s truely the kind of man he is. He’s a wonderful human being, and of course it’s human nature when you see people bashing somebody you love to get hurt and anger and fire back and what I did was not ladylike nor was it smart. I deleted all my Facebook, linked in stuff for the simple fact after seeing multiple men commenting about “hitting it.” It’s very uncomfortable to think grown men are looking up my pictures and saying such vulgar things. He is a hard worker and a very good man and I will say it over and over, its just hard not to let some of the evil things people say about him get the best of me, because when somebody steps up and does so much good for your family and for the community and he’s a great father and husband and uncle, I don’t think he deserves it. Morgan made the choice to come in here and run around inside of our perimeter wire while loudly sounding off in a vain and useless attempt to defend her uncle’s blatant Stolen Valor. To do so was her decision; she is not a victim here in that sense.
That said, I will say that she is a victim of her uncle’s voluminous lies about his military service, and she has clearly been taken in by him. I would suggest that she turn inward and direct her anger and embarrassment at HIM, and compel HIM to apologize and to make things right.
This is a harsh reality for those who have been deceived by posers, but Stolen Valor is Stolen Valor, regardless of who perpetrates it, or how much that Stolen Valor may hurt friends and relatives who do not want to believe that they have been lied to by someone who is dear to them.
Once again, it has been proven here that Stolen Valor is not a “victimless crime”. Even if there is no financial or material loss involved, the emotional damage which inevitably results can be devastating.

From the photo above, it’s obvious that your uncle decided that he would throw some cool guy stuff on his uniform that he didn’t earn. From there, I’m guessing that it all took on a life of its own.
Now your uncle is at a crossroads. Somewhere along the line, his employer was told that he spent 10 years in the Marine Corps, which, according to the records here, is incorrect. His employer is now also going to look at his initial application and see what he claimed for awards and schools when he applied. They will compare that against his military records, and if they don’t match, he will be subject to dismissal. Additionally, he might be charged under the new NJ Stolen Valor law.
At this point, I suggest that he come clean, first with his employer, and then here. I can only imagine that it would help his case to do it now, voluntarily, than later when he is being fired or charged with a crime.
Crossroads? He’s in the middle of a long wooden railroad trestle and both ends are burning like the very fires of hell. Life as he knows it is going to change with a quickness!

Somewhere in his career, while he was still an E-3, he decided that his service was inadequate, and decided he was going to be a Force Recon guy without actually going to the schools and doing the hard work. Once that ball starts rolling and people think that you are what you aren’t, it’s hard to stop. Now it is going to stop, and not on his terms.
All of us who have worn the uniform had the opportunity to buy some things that would make us look cooler than we were. Most of us didn’t, hence our disdain for those who did. It was an easy choice, and Gary chose incorrectly.

Absolutely correct Dave. The fact that he willingly served puts him well ahead of 95+ percent of his peers. But that wasn’t enough. He had to crap all over his honorable service. Why do that? As others have asked before: why to some people do that? You should be proud that you served; happy to have contributed. But I guess that just isn’t enough.

A common mistake among Posers is to claim Force Recon.
It is a VERY small community, So small in fact I don’t think there is anyone who participates on this page or any othe SV pages that have actually served in Force Recon.
“Force” Recon is an asset that is under the direct control of the Commanding General of a Marine Expeditionary Force. It is a company sized unit that can deploy platoons and sections with Units subordinate to the MEF.
Its members go through extreme screening proceedures and they are usually very Senior E-4s (Corporals) with 3 to 4 years in before they get into The Company.
In 20 years of Service I met/served with only 20 or so Force Recon Marines. On “Floats” they didnt really play with the Battalion Landing Team. They were opconned to the MEU commander and we rarely saw them.
They are NOT part of the Recon Battalions, nor are they part of the Battalion STA platoons, although Force Recon Marines usually start from there.
Someone a bit more up to speed may Correct me but I believe Force Recon is the smallest of all the Services Special Operations Groups.

MARSOC kept the MARSOC official Title but also uses Raiders. The Verbage changes a lot. The big difference now is that the Raiders/ MARSOC are getting a bigger piece of the Joint Service pie and Missions.
There was a concerted effort from the 70s to the 90s by the Corps to keep our pipeswinging badasses under our control. As a result MARSOC got left out of a lot of the Special operations. The Navy even horned in and had SEALS doing a lot of things that MARSOC units could have been tasked with.
The Marine Corps has always had good operators, theyt just didnt have the interservice smarts to get them the missions they need.
Well stated. Unfortunately, Recon also suffered from a lot of infighting as well. Additionally, a lack of General Officer representation possessed by other SOF communities was a hinderance.
NAVSPECWAR was a big help in bringing the SARC community up to speed. They pretty much took us under their wing.

I served in both BN/Force, as the majority of SARCs do if they do the job very long. I can’t even think of a SARC that stayed in for more than one enlistment that didn’t serve in both.

Any male with back pain, abdominal pain, difficulty in bowel and bladder habits, abnormal labs, significant trauma, or penta-annual physical gets a prostate exam.
A pelvic is similaly indicated with such signs/symptoms in a female.
Only reasons for not doing it: The operator has no fingers, or the patient doesn’t have an asshole.
