Lindsey Stone’s father “appalled”

| November 21, 2012

The Boston Herald, without giving TAH credit for breaking the photo of Lindsey Stone’s visit to Arlington National Cemetery last month, interviews her father, Peter, who claims he’s “appalled” by her behavior, while making excuses for her;

“She’s totally apologetic. She apologizes to anybody she’s offended,” her father, Peter Stone, told me last night. “She was reacting, I guess, to the sign instead of the place and didn’t intend it to be what it turned out to be.

“She had a lack of judgment,” added her father, who learned of the controversy yesterday. “I think they were just being funny, which is sad. It’s not how she or the family feels by any means.”

“Reacting…to the sign” isn’t an appropriate excuse. The sign was there to remind her to be respectful of the dead heroes who surrounded her. there’s a sign at the entrance to remind her, and signs all along the way to the Tombs of the Unknown. In her own words, she was “challenging authority in general”, but the authority, in this case was adherence to adult behavior. No one was asking her to kiss our collective ass, just to act like an adult, and she couldn’t do it.

“It’s not how she or the family feels…” That’s difficult to believe. I took my kids to the US Cemetery in Luxembourg when they were preteens and before we went inside, I lectured them about how they should behave and why. That’s what parents do. But apparently, not in the Stone household.

The thing that gets me is a month before we saw the photo, her friends told her that was wrong, but she left the photograph on her Facebook page – it was that important to her that she make her statement. Does she deserve the threats and being fired? Nope. And she probably won’t be fired. The company will wait until the whole thing blows over and then allow her and her co-worker return to work quietly.

Here’s a joint apology from Lindsey Stone and Jamie Schuh on Boston Herald.

Anyway, here’s the video of the interview with her father;

Thanks to TSO for the links.

The Dead Man

Of course she’s apologetic. Where is it? No no, not from him, I want to see her apology. It’s… not listed anywhere yet?

Reminds me of my little cousins when they do something stupid. I just ask them what they learned rather than going out of my way to prevent it unless it’s truly threatening.

What’s the over and under that this bimbo doesn’t actually learn anything and instead compartmentalizes it as our fault for getting upset?

NR Pax

I’ll disagree with you sligtly on this, Jonn. She certainly doesn’t deserve the threats but I don’t think the firing is out of line. If I recall correctly, she was on a work-related trip with patients. So she’s representing the company when she pulled her idiotic stunt. However, she might quietly come back in a few weeks once the storm has blown over.

The Dead Man

I stand corrected, she did apologize, I must’ve skimmed over it while looking to see if it had happened yet. Still, I don’t think she’ll actually learn much from this.

Twist

I took my daughter to the Arizona memorial when she was 7. She showed more maturity and respect than this 30 something “woman”.

Old Trooper

Her “judgement” makes me concerned for those she is charged with caring for, because if she had this big of a lapse in “judgement” and her overall attitude, then I wonder what lapses of “judgement” she has with those she cares for that we don’t hear about. With that in mind; if she and her cohort are not fired, then it calls into question the “judgement” of the employer, also.

Make_Mine_Moxie

Her father is appalled? Well, that makes it all better, then.

Hondo

Let me attempt to translate the Twit Twins’ apology:

“Oh geez, we stirred up a hornet’s nest and ended up in really deep shit. Maybe we better whip up some contrite-sounding bullshit and get it out there to save our freaking jobs. Then, after we keep a low profile for a while, we can go back to being douchebags who like ‘pushing the envelope’.”

I ain’t buying it, Twit Twins. That so-called apology just doesn’t ring true.

Nik

“The thing that gets me is a month before we saw the photo, her friends told her that was wrong, but she left the photograph on her Facebook page”

This.

It’s one thing for a dumbass person to take a dumbass picture. But to leave it up after being told it’s disrespectful conveys an intent to disrespect.

From the “apology” on the Boston Herald.

“We realize it was in incredibly poor taste, and are deeply sorry for the offense we have caused.”

I think what they meant to write was “We realize now that being a douchebag won’t defend us from the results of our stupidity, and are deeply sorry we got caught”.

NHSparky

IOW, when little Lindsey finds herself in the deep dark shits for what SHE’S done, run to daddy who’ll be covering her ass.

Nope, until she apologizes HERSELF, not accepted.

Islandofmisfittoys

This to me and anything she says rings hallow and in sincere at best. This is more a reaction to people being upset and someone getting caught with their hand in the cookie jar. Anyone with any sense, sel respect, respect for others, and that was brought up right would never have even thought to do this. The location alone should be humbling from the moment you step on the grounds.

Hondo

NHSparky: she did – technically, and after a fashion. See the second Boston Herald link in Jonn’s article (the one just before the video.)

Whether you buy it as a real apology or see it as a cynical attempt at damage control is another story. It sounds more like the latter to me, but I’ve been wrong before.

TSO

I’m with you Hondo. I’d call off the dogs, but I’m a softie. I think she thought she was being funny. She wasn’t of course, but I don’t think she stopped to consider the ramifications. At this point, she knows the ramifications. Is she sorry she got caught, of course. But, I think it was bad judgement, not some malign intent.

Ex-PH2

Uh, in re: the video, I see raw footage AP from the Tel Aviv are (impressive targeting, by the way).

My resopnse to Mr. Stone is: Sorry, fella, your little snot daughter screwed herself three ways to Sunday. That photo is going to follow her forever. The internet does not go away. Maybe you should have smacked her backside occasionally and been less coddling when she was growing up. I’ll bet she never told you and Mommy Stone about her little escapades while the two of you left her home alone and you went on a trip. Did you check the liquor cabinet after you came back from that weekend at Sandals in the Bahamas?

Sparky, it doesn’t matter what her apology is. The image and story are all over the internet. Apologizing is not going to persuade any future employer to hire her, unless she works at a strip joint — a REALLY CHEAP strip joint.

NHSparky

Saw it Hondo. Sorry, still not buying it. She’s as jacked up as a soup sandwich.

And not considering the ramifications, TSO? She had people TELLING her it was a bad idea and kept it up anyway.

< 2.5 Level of Knowledge (LOK.) Does not recognize correct answer when given. FAIL. Drop from program and reassign based on unsuitability and her being a total dumbass.

Twist

“Peter Stone said his daughter feels “terrible” about jeopardizing her job.”

That statement right there from her father tells me why she really said her appology.

Hondo

TSO: I’ll agree with calling off the dogs. But I still think Ms. Stone becoming acquainted with the joys of searching for new employment is completely apropos.

NHSparky: I didn’t say I was buying her apology, amigo – just that what she and the other Twit Twin wrote technically qualifies as such.

RunPatRun

Now we have her right where we want her. I think it’s time for physical assault, blow up her car, or burn down her house. DON”T LET UP! /sarc

She was dead wrong, but I don’t think there is anything further that can be gained here. If she hasn’t learned what she did is wrong, nothing is going to teach her. If international humiliation and loss of wages didn’t create a change in attitude, nothing likely will.

Frankly Opinionated

Far too many people in today’s society think that an apology will allow them to commit dumbassed things.
Long ago there used to be a one frame cartoon titled “Love Is”. The best one ever:
“Love Is, not having to say that you’re sorry.”
In other words, Don’t do stupid shit that one must apologize for.

JA

Ok, I get it. What she did was really awful. It was stupid and offensive.

She has expressed remorse, accepted responsibility, and provided an explanation for the action. That explanation is necessarily lame because the action was so asinine.

What more do we want?

The whole mission of society is to correct and fix bad behavior. I get your anger and think your rage is righteous but if you are going to indulge in this sort of anger, it really is probably best to at least have some idea of a path to forgiveness.

What path to forgiveness do you propose for this particular malefactor? I often hear in this forum statements that apologies are not good enough. What is good enough?

Ex-PH2

Sorry about the “strip joint” remark.

I’m still annoyed by all of this.

Someone who is 30 years old has no business acting like a 10-year-old who just found out what the middle finger means and hasn’t been stopped by parental authority. She has no business doing that on a company-sponsored/paid trip. She’s irresponsible and untrustworthy.

I did stupid things when I was 10. I didn’t do those stupid things when I was 30.

You’re supposed to grow some common sense when you hit that age. I guess it doesn’t happen any more. 30 must be the new 10. She’s still living with mommy and daddy.

It is never gonna die.

Hondo

JA: the public exposure and the Twit Twins losing their jobs is probably enough in the way of consequences. IMO that both punishes the behavior and serves as a deterrent example for others considering similar asininity.

As for correcting the behavior and/or learning from the mistake? That is up to the Twit Twins. Some are capable of learning and adapting; some are not. And it is absolutely impossible to make anyone learn or adapt if they are either incapable or simply don’t want to do so.

In short: society has done its part – sanctioned the guilty, provided deterrent example for others, and provided feedback regarding future acceptable conduct. Whether these two miscreants learn from the above is up to them.

Forgiveness comes after demonstration of both contrition and change.

MCPO NYC USN (Ret.)

My son recited the “Pledge of Allegiance” during “Let’s Go Vets” Rock and Roll Veteran’s weekend on WPDH radio when he was 3 years old, he salutes at the sound of “Taps”, stands each and every time our “National Anthem” is played, is almost ready to go prime time with his rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner”, and he tears up at stories of kids who lost a parent due to war … and other like circumstances.

It is strange to think, that a six year old and/or like Twist put it in # 4 above, a seven year old acts more mature and respectful than a beer drinking, cig smoking, foul mouthed hag like Lindsey Stone.

Apology written by a PR firm … not accepted by my family.

Nik

@20

I dunno, Ex-. Look at the Octo-Mom. Last I heard, she was stripping somewhere. Probably getting paid above average for it.

“Heeeeeerrrrrreeeee she is, boys. The Screamer of Arlington. The Middle Finger of Disrespect. Lindseey…Stooonnnneeee….”

Three points occur to me regarding this mess.

1. If she wants this to stop, if people want this to stop, I suspect not apologizing for, and excusing, her actions to those who don’t want to hear it will go a long way. Make a “real” apology, not some written drivel that someone else likely put together. I don’t believe she and Jamie wrote that apology for one second. Try something live, on video. No prepared notes, no teleprompters, just speak from the gut. No need to take questions. I wouldn’t sentence many people to having to take on the Press, they can be truly vicious.

2. The photog is getting off way light in this. Ms Stone is the face of it, she’s the one bearing the brunt of the wrath. That doesn’t seem quite fair.

3. The company’s actions from this point speak only for them, not the miscreants involved. If the Twit Twins aren’t fired for this, it speaks to the character of the company, not the idiots who started this bru-ha-ha.

Twist

Nik, I might be in the minority on this one, but I think the photographer is guilty to a lesser degree. She is guilty of taking the jacked up photo, but she did not post it on facebook and leave it up even though her friends told her it was disrespectfull.

Ex-PH2

@Nik, you could be on to something there. Maybe a list of jobs that require no skills or trust could be created for both of those dumbos to consider.

Stripper (I’d say pole dancer, but that requires skill and rhythm)
Trash sorter at the garbage depot
Dishwasher – metal trays only
Powdered detergent box packer
Celery/lettuce/tomato picker (requires use of a sharp knife)
Busboy at greasy spoon diner
Movie ticket taker (does not require handling money)
Dog kibble sorter
Pigs ear dog treat packer
Hog rind sorter for pork rind production
Hoof collector for gelatin production
Used tire recycling center guard
Junk yard guard
Pork rinds carton packer
Ashtray cleaner in large office buildings
Packing box assembler
Handrolled cigarette cutter in Malaysia

That’s all I have for now.

I think I’m getting over being annoyed now.

Thunderstixx

Does anybody other than I wonder who she voted for ???

I doubt it was Romney or Paul or anyone other than the messiah…

I would imagine that she was leading protests against soldiers, spitting on them, screaming all kinds of nasty shit about them for years and her father sat there with his thumb in his ass applauding her for being so outspoken and faithful to her beliefs.

Having had front row seats to the Scott Walker recall last year in Wisconsin I saw how so many or kids like her (and she isn’t a kid), or should I say punks, I know how reprehensible their behavior is.

They used the Veteran’s Memorial in the capitol dome of Wisconsin as a place to tape pictures and signs denouncing Walker and all of us that served.

It took a general uprising of the public to get them to take it down.

This generation has no shame, none whatsoever.

But it is what mommy and daddy want…

I hope she gets fired and cannot find work for years.

OWB

Twist: I agree with you to the extent that I simply do not have enough info to make a determination on it. The accomplice may or may not have had knowledge of what was about to happen. If she was part of setting it up and such, than she is equally guilty. If Lindsey only handed her a camera and asked her to snap a pic, then she may not be guilty of much of anything beyond being at the wrong place at the time.

While I suspect that she knew what to expect, I do not know that. We know that Lindsey intended to disrespect and stuck with that program long after it was pointed out to her that what she did was wrong. For all we know, her accomplice may have been one of the voices suggesting that she take the pic down.

If their employer has similar questions, that may be exactly what is being investigated. This may or may not warrant a twofer firing. Probably does, but there remains a remote possibility that the accomplice got caught up in something in which she was not really a willing participant.

(Pardon me if this is already settled. Been away from the computer for a bit and may be behind the power curve on this.)

Nik

@24, 27

Fair enough. I can see where you’d could feel that way. From my viewpoint, I see it as more of a case of very bad judgment. She (the photog) should know that the internet is forever. Digital is damn near forever. But if she didn’t have control over it staying up, yes, that alleviates some of her level of complicity.

I doubt this “ruins” her life as I’ve heard suggested. Yes, she may well get fired. Yes, she’ll doubtless find it easy to get similar level work in the near future. Yes, she might well have to take a lesser paying/lesser trust position in the future.

But, a future of keeping herself out of trouble and out of the limelight in a negative sense will allow her to crawl out of this shithole she dug herself into.

No, it shouldn’t be easy to do so.

And I’m with you, Ex-PH2. This calling her a “kid” crap has to go. She’s not a kid. She’s an adult who knew, or should have known, much better. She’s an adult that needs to be held accountable for her actions.

Just an Old Dog

I’m pretty much done with this jackass. You act stupid you win stupid prizes. She’s rightly caught hell and will be forever enshrined in internet infamy for her ignorance. I would hope she learned respect and even takes the time to learn about what it means, and perhaps does some anonymous service at a cemetery. The perfect punishment for her would be making her watch recorded funerals of the servicemen buried at Arlington for about 8 hours straight. By the way, although I think she should be allowed to earn a living, the company she is with has every right and should terminate her for being a dumb ass on the clock.

Flagwaver

See, I can understand a minor lapse in judgement for taking that picture in the first place, but that is about it. Her apology is crap.

A true apology comes after realize that you did something wrong, which she never did. Her friend told her it was in poor taste, and she didn’t care.

Then, just as any young child with no sense, she was caught and threatened with punishment. After that, she whispered “I’m sorry,” as if that would make everything better.

She’s not apologizing for taking the picture, that would only have happened if she was truly sorry for the picture. No, she is apologizing for being caught. Just like a small child.

Well, in this day and age, small children are told that it is okay as long as you apologize. Well, that didn’t cut it in my day. Back in my day, you got an asswhoppin’. Maybe if her father had actually whooped her more, she would realize what respect is.

More ass whoppin’s and less participation trophies, or we will be seeing a lot more of this shit happening.

malclave

@7

“We are sincerely sorry that we got caught, and deeply regret that we were called out on our actions.”

NHSparky

I hope she gets fired and cannot find work for years.

I don’t. While she might be let go, I certainly don’t want to be paying for her dumbassery when she can’t find a job and ends up as another of the permanent dole class.

malclave

@24
but I think the photographer is guilty to a lesser degree.

Didn’t someone in the first thread post that the photographer was on the organization’s “management team”?

If so, then IMO her offense is greater, since the trip was work-related.

Anonymous

It’s a BS apology. She’s apologizing for the picture, not the act. When she acknowledges that she shouldn’t have extended her middle finger I’ll be satisfied that she’s learned her lesson.

Hondo

malclave: Isn’t that what I said? (smile)

Nik

@33

Yah. I forgot the photog is Management. Seems like the company should go harsher on her. Greater expectations from leadership and all that.

Spade

If she wants to apologize she should go to Arlington and offer to clean the entire tomb complex with a toothbrush.

Twist

@33

I had forgoten aboout that. You are correct.

Twist

I am not Canadian.

Ex-PH2

“I hope she gets fired and cannot find work for years.” To whoever said that, I do not feel that way at all. I agree with Sparky; I don’t want to pay for her idiocy when she’s out of work.

There is plenty of worthwhile advice about how to get a job and keep it, especially in a very sluggish economy, which may not pick up any time soon. There are also articles about the dangers of social media like Facebook to your getting and/or keeping a job, and they are specific about what should not be posted there.

For the same reason that before digital photography made it so easy to shoot and distribute embarassing pictures at the Christmas party, you didn’t want those things turning up on your desk and handed around on the office grapevine and people knew it was a door closing in your face if you acted like a fool. Women in particular had to act like drones, unless they wanted to be remembered as “that chick with the moves”. It was easier then to bury that and go elsewhere.

The digital age makes it nearly impossible to bury it and go elsewhere. It doesn’t matter if those two dimwitted women apologize and crawl on their stomachs for forgiveness. Once something like this goes viral, there are copies of it all over the place even if the person who made the original post takes it down. It will never die. You can’t go to the local newsstand and buy all the copies and shred them.

My guess is that if those two women do get fired, they will have a difficult time finding work for a while. Employers do check the internet and social websites, when people apply for work. And it does not matter than Ms. Stone has removed the offensive photo from her Facebook page. The picture and article will still come up on an internet search of her name, as well as her friend’s.

What has been seen cannot be unseen.

Twist

Just Google her name and you will see how correct Ex-PH2 is. There are pages upon pages about this.

Nik

Look at this picture:

That belongs to this page:

https://www.facebook.com/HireLindseyStone

Look through it and tell me again how sorry she is, Dad. :p

2-17 Air Cav

@29. My sentiments exactly. And it’s nice to know that social stigma actually still applies to something in our otherwise anything-goes society.

malclave

@35
Yeah… I have a bad habit of not always reading the whole thread before commenting, and I hadn’t seen your comment.

Chuck

She shouldn’t be fired for the picture. She SHOULD be fired for actions that negatively impacted the image and operations of the non-profit company she works for. And if enough donors and potential donors contact them to say “we really can’t donate to an organization that employs foolish children”. Enough pressure and bad press, and she’ll be on the street in a heartbeat (along with her partner-in-idiocy). Justice will be served, and no one’s “First Amendment” rights will be offended, because there is no 1A right to embarrass your employer.

Nik

@45

And apparently, she was.

“We wish to announce that the two employees recently involved in the Arlington Cemetery incident are no longer employees of LIFE. Again, we deeply regret any disrespect to members of the military and their families. The incident and publicity has been very upsetting to the learning disabled population we serve. To protect our residents, any comments, however well-intentioned, will be deleted. We appreciate your concern and understanding as we focus on the care of our community.”

And Hire Lindsey Stone has an entire 51 likes !!!

Fire Lindsey Stone has over 2700 likes….

Hmmmmmm……..

Wazzup with that ???

She needs to not be working for a long time to serve as an example to idiots everywhere…

Mark

With all the attention this story has gotten, this will follow her forever. her best bet would be to change her name, change her hair style and move to a different state and start a new life hoping no one would realize it was her that was in the picture.

OWB

Will she actually be eligible for unemployment since she was fired for cause? Didn’t used to be, but a whole lotta things have changed.

OWB

Unemployment compensation, that is.
