Let’s See What our Liberal Brethren Say About This One
Seems as if even the MSM must be closet racists.
Apparently NBC is in a bit of hot water. Recently, they ran an ad featuring a monkey performing gymnastics. They ran it four times.
Usually, that would be perceived as just an attempt at humor in a TV ad. However, in this case NBC rant the ad in question for the 4th time immediately after Gabby Douglas won the Olympic Gold Medal in women’s all-around gymnastics.
Gabby Douglas is of African-American decent. Oops.
NBC has since apologized, saying that “no offense was intended” and stating the timing was a mere unfortunate coincidence. Frankly, IMO that’s probably exactly the truth.
But I’m curious as to whether our liberal readers here at TAH are going to buy that. After all they seem to have castigated some of the authors here for doing the same – if not for far less.
What about it, insipid? Joe? Knees2TheBreeze? Does this prove that NBC is a racist organization? Or was this just an unfortunate coincidence – e.g., and unfortunate choice of ads at precisely the wrong time – that should be ignored?
And if you’re going to say the latter – the explain why authors here don’t get the same consideration from you. It wouldn’t be because you’re being hypocritical, would it?

Hondo,damn it!
It wouldn’t be because you’re being hypocritical, would it?
Needed a spew warning! Luckily it was only water.
I think it just proves monkeys can do a lot of shit.
Yeah, I don’t think I’ll hold my breath waiting for the righteous indignation protests of our liberal “friends” on this one.
I’m a middle of the road guy but lean more liberal on many issues…I think it’s funny
I think all the things they think are racist they’d have to be pretty racist to “see.”
I agree with BooRadley. I rarely if ever see any of this “racist innuendo” until someone starts screaming about it.
You tell’em Hondo!!
Hondo, you are putting them on the line. That will get them all butthurt. They can’t say what they want to when you put it this way.
Dayum! That truth slap across their faces hurts……
I think that insipid is over at NBC boards posting his anger right now!
Personally, having seen the Trunk Monkey add too many times, I find the use of animals just a tad bit overused. That being said, this was as racist as using a Chihuahua to hock tacos… in other words, it isn’t. It is an animal in a commercial to promote an animal program.
I was under the impression that Insipid WAS a trained monkey…
Well, no surprise here, the Liberal man has been keeping us down for years and in the Ghetto Plantation and they won’t let us out.
I give that commercial 4 bananas.
Why would liberals defend NBC in the first place?
CI: be serious. Like most of the mainstream media, NBC has a history of pandering to/cheerleading for the liberal side of the political house. See the edited Martin “transcript” originally released by NBC for proof. And that’s only one example.
Hondo – The problem with presuming that Liberals will defend NBC is that much like Conservatives don’t find the news media to be Conservative…Liberals don’t find it to be Liberal.
Saw that there was a flap about the commercial. Which I had happened to see. For the umpteenth time. Was scratching my head over it, wondering what I had missed.
But then, I’m not looking for something to gripe about.
Ever notice that invariably it is white people telling everyone what is supposed to offend them? That offends me. Do these white people really think they are so superior that only they can define what is and what is not racism?
It is also very insulting for those same people to pretend that blacks are any more monolithic in their behavior than are whites in spite of their decades at attempts to train us all to bend to their will.
The word hypocrite only begins to describe the depths of depravity of these people.
CI: if you re-read my article, I don’t believe I ever indicated that our liberal “brethren” would defend NBC. My prediction was that they’d give NBC a pass and accept their apology at face value – a courtesy they do not routinely extend to conservatives in general, and to authors here in particular.
Personally, I think NBC just got bit by bad timing that someone didn’t catch, that the brouhaha over the commercial is hugely overblown, and that their statement is 100% correct – and that they deserve a pass on charges of “racist intent”. I just want to see whether our liberal commenters here (1) agree with me, and (2) if so, I really want to know why they treat the MSM differently than authors here in similar situations.
@Hondo – Point taken, I erroneously presumed that defending was implied based on the NBC medium and not TAH, and I shouldn’t have.
Yeah, no big deal. It would only be “racist” if a network like FOX did it. Duh!
And for the record, our liberal brethren here at TAH (for the most part) seem to be more reasonable than liberals elsewhere.
@ 13 Devtun!!! You done shit the stick man!!! I did a word play with obama and ‘banana’ and was crucified by our resident “libtards”! An educated explanation of my comment fell on deaf, also considered STUPID, ears!!! Now it’s their own libtard press so let’s see what will, or won’t, say. Guess where I’m putting my money.
Yat Yas 1833: I wonder how insipid et al will take it when someone points out that there is indeed a reasonable, race-neutral rationale for calling Obama “Comrade Banana”. Obama was (1) strongly influenced by Socialism/Marxism growing up, hence the “Comrade” part; and (2) he hails from the only US state where bananas are commercially grown (Hawaii). (Comrade Pineapple would actually be less apropos, as pineapples were first commercially grown in the US in Florida.)
Perhaps you put those two facts together subconsciously to come up with that expression.
Hondo compadre! LMAO! Again, I will accept your counsel and use the ‘pineapple’ reference!? Ya know, it’s sad that I went to the AFEES station, 35+ years ago, to sign on the line and raised my right hand and now there are 4-F faggots trying to tell me what I can and can’t say?!? Ooops, if faggots a non PC word I can’t use???
Some people will see anything, anywhere, at any time. . . even if it’s not there.
I’m still waiting for an apology for a Lucky Charms commercial back in 60s or 70s that aired during the Jimmy Cagney/Pat O’Brien movie,”The Fighting 69th.” I’m willing to wait a little longer.
Be careful with “pineapple” too, Yat Yas 1833. I’ve heard some claim that is an ethnic slur directed against Hawaiian-Americans. Seriously.
Got it! Today being Sunday, I eventually got to this; Matthew 7: 3-5
3: And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? . . . . .
But then again, the Libturds don’t generally follow Christ or Christianity, they have their own statist-sponsored religion = Big Gubbment
Isaiah 41-13(NIV) comes to mind: “For I am the Lord your God
who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear;
I will help you.”
I see no reason NOT to accuse the Ogabe Steno Pool (MSM) of being racist – in their world it’s perfectly fine to make an accusation and demand the accused prove otherwise, ala Harry Reid’s accusations re: Mittens’ taxes.
@YatYas, actually, a faggot is defined as a bundle of sticks.
Do what you will with that definition. 🙂
Some of us are so old that we remember when a fag was a cigarette. Given how out of favor they now are you’d think that it would be OK with the pc police to still call them that?
I was saddened when I saw a picture of Gabby standing proudly wearing her gold medal, beaming ear to ear, and the caption was “1st African American All Around Gold Medalist”.
Huh…. All I saw was a proud American girl. I guess I have to work harder to see and judge people by the color of their skin and not the content of their character.
As for the monkey commercial, people who are constantly seeking something to express faux outrage at will always be able to find it. We watched that program live and NEVER made any connection.
OWB: No wonder that expression isn’t still around. Jeez.
There is something quite unappealing about taking a pull on a fag.
Bubblehead ray: I actually was offended when I saw the same thing for gabby’s medal ceremony too. All I saw was a damn proud AMERICAN. Real racists are those who go searching for it.
@32 Cigs are still fags with the brits. Their coffee and cigs are brews and fags. It took some getting used to. Cultural thing is all.
Well… I wasn’t going to go for the bait, but after today’s horrific attack I’m getting pretty tired the meme that recognizing racism is the new racism.
What Poetrooper wrote in his column and the NBC commercial are not analogous. Poetrooper actually called the first elected black President an “affirmative action President” and Jonn referred to the 2008 election as an affirmative action program. It wasn’t a mistake or an accident it’s not like you had an article about the ineffectiveness of affirmative action and then poetrooper wrote an article about Obama afterwards and i put the two together and screamed racism. If Bob Costas had actually CALLED the Gymnast a monkey, that would be analogous and it would be clearly racist.
That being said, what is the point of that fucking commercial anyway? I haven’t watched TV in years and that commercial completely validates my choice.
@23- Though not necessarily racist, “Comrade Banana” is certainly not reasonable. I confess to never having read President Obama’s biography so I’ll take your word for him being “strongly influenced” by marxism as a youth. However he’s NOT strongly influenced by it now. He is a moderate in fact i can direct you to more than a few lefty sites that will tell you he’s a right wing conservative!
I don’t think it’s anymore fair then calling Bush or Obama “Comrade Coke-spoon”.
Of course, the purpose of insults is not to be fair.
insipid: that explanation ain’t gonna cut it, fella. Elsewhere, you castigated one commenter here severely for a “Comrade Banana” remark directed towards the POTUS. You outright accused him of using a racial slur. You outright rejected his explanation that there was no racist intent in the remark. You now admit that the remark is “not necessarily racist”. Yet I haven’t seen you apologize to him for accusing him of propagating a racial slur. In contrast, you accept NBC’s explanation of “no racist intent” for the commercial fiasco at face value. You refuse to criticize them for running an ad featuring a monkey as gymnast immediately after an African-American female had just won a gold medal in the sport. To you, that’s “no big deal”. The only rational explanation for your behavior here is that the commenter here was an avowed conservative – and you don’t like conservatives. In contrast, NBC is part of the liberally-biased mainstream media, and thus an ally. So you’ll refrain from criticism of someone you perceive as an ally while criticizing someone you perceive as an opponent under virtually identical circumstances – to wit, an unintentional use of what could be wrongly perceived as racially insensitive imagery or language. Your criticism of Poetrooper’s article similarly rings hollow. Yes, a couple of his articles here IMO pushed the envelope; I probably wouldn’t have gone there. But intentionally pushing the envelope to make a point (or make others think) doesn’t equate to proof of racism. And I also haven’t noticed you commenting on any examples of the use of intentionally provocative language or imagery denigrating whites – and please, spare me the “that doesn’t happen” BS argument. Only a fool could possibly believes that racism and bigotry is limited to whites. Obviously, you are willing to give those with whom you agree a pass for doing exactly the same thing you castigate those with which you disagree. And you do so even when you fully admit that you might be wrong, and there might be no nefarious intent involved on the part of those with which you disagree.… Read more »
Hondo – this thread and what you wrote here really forced me to look hard at this — as a rapidly disenchanted liberal. I only wince when I read these terms because you know the liberal mind will singularly focus on them. So I don’t assume “untrained ape” or “Comrade Obama” = racism. Unfortunately, over-sensitivity has definitely put us beyond the realm where the only useful for metric–deed–has been suborned by worries over what someone might think but not express. There *is* a certain component of social science at work here. Studies show that people who view black male faces prior to vocabulary tests will show a sort of “stereotype activation” in their lexical decision tasks, vs. what they would viewing white faces first. So we’re more likely to go to a term like “ape” for a black person than we would if we were talking about a white person. My problem with these studies is that we are completely able to override these triggers with cognitive thought, and there’s nothing within those studies that says such lexical decision tasks are rooted in anything but social/cultural conditioning, certainly not any racist intent, i.e. “hate.” My experience with black males growing up was largely negative. Is my subsequent subconscious reaction to them my fault or theirs? And I think that’s a question people here have legitimately asked time and again, without a sensible answer provided. I mean, I’m conditioned to salivate over sizzling bacon; it doesn’t mean I’m going to defy the traditions of my ancestors and choke it down. Maybe it’s just my own growing disdain for “liberalism,” as it’s certainly nothing like what John Locke would conceive to be liberal, but I’m personally tired of the selective outrage routine. There are better examples than the one offered here, too, of the kind of hypocrisy you all are talking about. I’m more concerned that the supposed “rational” quadrant can’t get that even if you can put your finger on racial connections between Obama and banana or ape based on those LDTs I mentioned above, it hardly matters, as they definitely… Read more »
I’m willing to bet that it wouldn’t be “no big deal” to Liberals if this happened on Fox. I’d also be willing to bet that this would be front page news on the Huffington Post and the NY times if it were Fox. It would be reported on over and over again at MSNBC and CNN. I do believe that NBC made an honest mistake and it was not their intent to insult this American gymnist.
#40, oversensitivity, see #42. This dude’s a pro. You can’t criticize the fraud in cheif without this guy screaming bloody murder and accusing you of racism. Of course, there’s not a single person here that takes him seriously, so his pointless rants only make for good entertainment.
insipid–so what exactly CAN we criticize Obama for, and how shall we do it so that your delicate buttflower does not get hurt and irritated?
Well, damn.
Looks like I owe you an apology, insipid. Faulty memory on my part – the guy posting as Anonymous on this thread ( http://valorguardians.com/blog/?p=30759 ) sounded enough like you that I conflated the two of you in memory. My error.
Of course, you’re getting even more ridiculous in your latest comment above. Do you really need to be reminded which party was in favor of legalized segregation in 1954? Ditto during the race riots of the 1960s? And why the term “Solid South” existed – and where legal segregation was endemic, and which party ruled most Southern States as virtual one-party monopolies? And to which party George C. Wallace belonged? Here’s a clue for ya: it wasn’t the GOP. Without GOP members who actually paid more than lip service to racial equality, the Civil Rights Act would never have passed and segregation might still be the law in many places today.
And don’t give me that high and mighty “I’ll speak out if I see it” bullshit. Because you’ve already proven you won’t. You had a chance to come down on the NBPP on this thread ( http://valorguardians.com/blog/?p=29338 ) when they were inciting murder on racial grounds. You didn’t. In fact, you defended them.
@43- How exactly is President Obama a “Fraud”. As far as i can see he was elected with the biggest mandate since Reagan and is trying to accomplish his agenda with no help from the Republicans. If there is a “fraud” it’s George W. Bush who was appointed by 5 members of the Supreme court and then lied about having a “humble” foreign policy instead getting us into a war based on false pretenses. I won’t even get into his vast increase in the size of government.
I didn’t like Reagan’s or Bush Senior’s policies but they won fair and square. For me to say otherwise and call them “frauds” would be absurd.
Again, what will your excuse be when Obama wins in November? Obviously you don’t have the class to just accept your loss and recognize he is the legitimate President. I’m guessing you’re going to go with voter fraud. It’s almost too bad Acorn isn’t around anymore to be your boogeyman.
Gee, it looks like someone’s still butt-hurt nearly 12 years later that the “let’s have selective recounts until we get the answer we want” fraud scheme was stopped by the Courts before it could steal a Presidential election. Pity the courts didn’t do the same 8 years later in MN before the same scheme was successfully used to steal a US Senate seat.
Insipid, You are a complete moron and racist. Anyone who throws the “N” word around in a flirting fashion certainly is. In addition to being a moron and racist, you are neither intelligent or informed. Here some news that is over one year old. Read below: The Spectacle Blog Surprise! Obama’s ACORN Thugs Are Alive And Preparing for 2012 By Matthew Vadum on 5.16.11 @ 8:45AM ACORN is far, far worse than everything you’ve heard. It celebrates and promotes the worst pathologies in society in an effort to kill the American experiment in self-governance. And the rumors of ACORN’s death have been greatly exaggerated. The radical group declared bankruptcy at the end of 2010, but its leaders acknowledge that they are building a new network of activist groups to continue ACORN’s work undermining America’s free institutions. As predicted in my new book Subversion Inc.: How Obama’s ACORN Red Shirts are Still Terrorizing and Ripping Off American Taxpayers, ACORN is restructuring in time to help re-elect President Obama in 2012. Obama used to work for ACORN and represented the group in court as its lawyer. ACORN chief organizer Bertha Lewis has created a group called the Black Institute whose agenda is essentially identical to ACORN’s. ACORN founder Wade Rathke is spreading the gospel of Marxist social justice around the world through his offshoot group ACORN International (also known as Community Organizations International). State chapters have incorporated themselves under new names. New York became New York Communities for Change. California became Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment. Texas became Texas Organizing Project. ACORN’s vote manufacturing division, Project Vote, still operates under the same name and small-c communist Frances Fox Piven still sits on its board. ACORN’s housing bubble generator, ACORN Housing, changed its name to Affordable Housing Centers of America. It’s the same people in the same offices and it just goes on and on. ACORN insiders have admitted that the “new” groups will re-federate under a new name soon. ACORN is a “boiler room” operation. Once the authorities get wind of it, it moves and assumes a new name while it… Read more »
So predictable…Waaarglblarglegeorgebushblargleblah. Give it a rest dude, you’re toast.
I had a comment for the “b-b-b-but bush!” crowd, but halfway through typing it realized that words on a screen wont affect anyone, let alone someone still blaming a man and his policies from over 4 years ago.
Sigh.
Is it drinking time yet?
@45- Hondo- Now if i don’t make an argument AGAINST something (love it if someone tells me how to italicize here) that automatically means i’m FOR something? Yes, i am against what the NBPP did. I cannot argue everything all the time. I just don’t want to spend my whole day at this. And believe me, i could. The one thing i do admire about Conservatives is that you guys are persistent. I only wish that Liberals had your perseverence. That being said, Fuck the NBPP! Happy?
I also think that you’re elevating them in terms of importance in order to misdirect. The NBPP is no more representative of today’s civil rights movement than Tim McVeigh is representative of gun enthusiasts. Although there’s been a few folks on this site giving the Tim McViegh second amendment argument against federal intrusion. Of course YOU didn’t condemn THEM.
So it seems like it is somehow incumbent upon ME to condemn anyone on the left that says something crazy ANYWHERE. But it’s quite alright when you ignore someone on the right saying something crazy- not just out in the ether- but on this very site. Because when one guy invoked Social Darwinism you were quiet as a church mouse till i brought it up. And when someone else invokes “second amendment remedies”, again, you’re pretty quiet about it.
