The Michael Yon story
Michael Yon is busy stirring up his minions to incite them to kill me (yes, at least one of them over there has been quoted as wanting to “kill him stop that gean pool”). I’ve been blocked for months from Yon’s Facebook page, so it’s been reported to me.
He’s upset because because he’s been picking on TSO again and I sent him the picture from his FOIA that I’ve had for months. There was nothing in there that was really earth-shattering, so I didn’t bother with it. But since he’s hinting that I broke into 10th Special Forces Group headquarters to get that picture which he claims was taken just prior to some secret mission he was going on, I figured I’d better show him how I do my business.
Here’s the FOIA form on him;
Here’s the photo that he says I broke into 10th SFG’s HQs to steal. Anyone in the military in the 80s would recognize it as a standard ID card photo;
Here’s his assignments for his whole 4 years and 11 months of service;
It looks like out of his 4 years and 11 months of service, he spent 2 years and 3 months as a student. Then he spent 14 months at 10th Group in Ft Devens, MA, then 17 months at 10th Group at Bad Toltz in Germany before he was discharged.
And his awards and schooling;
See? It’s all pretty boring. But there it is, it all came from the National Personnel Records Center in St Louis, not from one of my countless ninja assaults on a Special Forces Headquarters somewhere.
Yeah, I know, that’s pretty boring, too. I’m sorry. But it’s Sunday and I’m trying to watch reruns of Maggie Q in Nikita on Netflix.
As the Wikipedia page on Michael Yon quotes him “If a writer wants to make money, he should avoid truth and tell people what they want to hear. Yet to win the war, tell the truth.” I guess he opted for making money.

TSO: he’d lose the suit. None of the info in Yon’s FOIA was information protected under the Privacy Act. I know because I’ve seen the whole FOIA document on Yon. Everything in it is information publicly releasable by law under the FOIA without the consent of the individual concerned. (Photos, if contained in the OMPF, are indeed releasable.)

I have no doubt that it’s clean as a whistle, given your high profile and the nature of the people you have pissed off, if it wasn’t it would be out there. I also don’t doubt you have a copy of it.

Not 100% certain why, but based on the Ebay sales it looks like he is in need of funds. The Bowe posts, attacks on SA, Medevac articles, and now the defense of Rieckhoff…all to get his followers in a tizzy. Any bets the next move is to solicit a legal fund from his fans?

taco bell: for some reason, the characterization of discharge is not an item that is routinely released under the FOIA. Characterization of discharge (honorable, general, etc . . . .) is routinely redacted.
I’d guess it was to offer some degree of protection to hose receiving general and/or undesirable discharges from bias, but I don’t really know if that’s the case or not.
is there a writeup why you dislike Yon so much? My father brought up in conversation that he started reading his articles and the name rung a bell but I couldnt place it till I saw this post.
@39, Yon used to be a bit of a hero of mine, and then one day he just seems to have snapped. I don’t really get it to be honest, but he just started going off the rails. Dustup with TSA (Don’t you know who I am -type thing) then CJ, then Medevacs (he had a point until he said that folks should refuse deployment to avoid violating the Geneva Conventions) dustups with SF guys at Professional Soldiers etc. Just do a search on Yon in our search thing above and you’ll see the full list.
I never followed Yon’s writings, but always heard decent things about him from fellow Soldiers. When he got into it with Uncle Jimbo early last year, I saw how far off the deep end he seemed to be getting. The hilarity that has ensued since only reinforces my opinion of him.
@ # 38: Aren’t less than Honorable Discharges INTENDED to earn bias? The courts I sat in on seemed to make that point.
CarlS: didn’t say I necessarily agreed, amigo. Just giving a possible explanation as to the why. However, the World War II (and later) era undesirable discharge was at times abused, and people receiving same indeed faced significant post-discharge bias. This would be my guess as to what led to type of discharge not being FOIA-releasable.

I finally unfriended Yon yesterday, after I saw his latest invective about Jonn and TAH. I followed him for years, and while he focused on the mission, he was a great journalist. Every time that he opined on anything else, he revealed himself to be a Nancy efftard (no insult to ladies named Nancy intended or implied). He engages in petty battles that don’t even matter. I don’t get it, but I won’t contribute to his numerical popularity.He’s dropped about a dozen fans since I unliked his page. For the record, at that time, he had 48,746 fans. He is on a downward trajectory and will crash eventually.
