Combat troops win one against POGs

| September 19, 2011

USAToday runs an article today about some findings by Midwest Research Institute in regards to Gulf War syndrome. i doubt their research, actually, because it’s based on so few Gulf War participants and I’ve always been leery of people who claim to be victims of the ailment. But I’m no doctor, so what do I know?

Anyway, MRI claims that many of the ailments associated with Gulf War Syndrome seem attached to the use of pesticides that never made it to the frontline troops and apparently were horded by people other than grunts (POGs);

Insecticides used in rear areas are only considered potential causes. Only Army support troops used a 70% DEET insecticide and lindane powder, which is no longer used in the Army. Insecticides now contain only 30% DEET. DEET contains the same chemical that causes problems in nerve agents, but the Environmental Protection Agency has determined it’s safe as long as it’s used as directed by civilian manufacturers.

Soldiers also used the insecticide permethrin on their clothing. It’s designed to last through six months’ worth of washings, but the researchers found that improperly trained soldiers applied the solution once a week or even, in some cases, daily.

I never saw any pesticides among combat troops…which wasn’t odd for Desert Storm. Combat troops saw very little of the equipment they needed. For example, we didn’t get our desert camouflaged uniforms until the day before the Ground War started – but every fucking forklift driver in the port had three sets. I couldn’t get socks or boots for my troops until a member of COB6’s platoon went down and hit up his wife in the support battalion for some socks and she gave us enough to replace the socks for every member of the company. I had to go to the IG to get one of my platoon members a pair of boots after he walked out of three pairs because our S-4 NCO (who later killed himself with what I hope was the .45 Colt Commander I threw in the amnesty trailer) said he didn’t have time to look for one pair of boots for one private. While he was being a dick, he had himself at least one brand new pair of desert boots.

So you pogue fucks that were hording the equipment that was supposed to go to the front finally got what you were asking for – you poisoned yourselves with your greed. And the grunts win one. Not that we would have been pussies and used the pesticide anyway.

Sorry, i just needed to get that off my chest.

Wow, you got desert BDU’s BEFORE combat operations??? I got mine about a month after….and the boots were too small, my 13 year old son wears them now….. We sure looked good with desert covers on our Kevlar buckets and greens everywhere else though…

John Curmudgeon

This is definitely one of my favorite posts by far. Fuck the POGs, long live Combat Arms.

Old Trooper

You threw a .45 Colt Commander in the amnesty trailer!?!? I will remember this when you come to the HHC next itme. I may have an “amnesty trailer” set up just for you 😛

ObamaGirl

what a ridicolous post, first you claim that Gulf War Syndrome is made up then you say all “POGs” deserve whatever health problems they mave because they were greedy and horded all the deet for themselves but grunts wouldn’t have evened bothered to use it because they aren’t pussies.. Your point being?

Your unit not having it’s proper equipment is the First Sergeant and Platoon Sergeants of your companies fault. Maybe if you would have had the guts to speak up your platoon would have been outfitted with their equipment. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. Spineless Platoon Sergeants such as yourself who only care about their NCOERs often screw over their platoons. I am sure you always had new boots and new socks.

Flagwaver

When I was a Supply Sergeant, my boys came first. I damn near missed a convoy because I was threatening my S-4 for doing the same shit that you describe, but it was for IBAs for my Scout PLT. Yeah, an entire platoon of Scouts that didn’t have their IBAs and were told they would be shipped to them at Anaconda… Yeah, Fuckin’ Right.

However, the S-4 in Kuwait had a brand new IBA hanging in his office right next to his helmet and pristine weapon (decked out with PAQ-4, PVS-14, underslung Masterkey)… yeah, the POG thought he was a super trooper with all the shit that the actual guys needed in the field.

I was just a 94-Yankme, but I still humped a ruck alongside my troopies. I gave up my shit to make sure my guys had what they needed. Socks, beans, bullets, even my extra pair of boots that would fit one of my troopies who tore the entire sole off of his.

Bulldog22

I did 03-04 in Iraq. We didnt get IBAS until the beginning 0f 04. I had to wear the tanker BS kevlar pullover shit. I finally wrangled up an old John Wayne flak vest for a couple of my crew. We were sucking for supplies for a long time. When were you at anaconda? We got to the outer ring of anaconda in November 03. Bulldo Troop, 1/10 CAV, 4ID

Frankly Opinionated

Anyone who would preface their comment with a name as utterly idiotic as “Obamagirl”, has already shown that said comment is worthless.

Bulldog22

she is in a bag of dicks, not here.

BooRadley

Jonn, I was going to say “rant respected, noW back to remembering we’re all on the same side.”

But now all I’ve got to say is ” FUCK YOU OBAMAWHORE”

Bulldog22

obama girl couldnt possibly understand making do with what you have. We all bitch and moan up the chain to get more shit for our troops. We never get what we want or need from higher or supply. It isnt the supply guy who is out with the troops that keeps it. Usually, it is the remf way back in the rear with all the gear that gets the good shit. It was hillarious when my troop finally got to anaconda (way on the outer ring of anaconda) We went to one of the kbr messhalls (YUMMY) all the remfs were walking around with their M4s loaded down with everything a mall ninja would drool over. Not a scratch on any of it. We were all missing parts from our 9s and M4s.
There might have been a few 1SGs keeping the good stuff, (I had one like that)but not too many platoon sergeants.
obamagirl is most likely a troll??????

Bulldog

OG has been trolling around here for awhile. She has either never been in the military or was a REMF because everyone knows an E7 can just snap his fingers and get whatever he wants for his men….

Bulldog22

I thought she was. I have been away from here for a few months and was guessing that she was trolling.

I was in military I was a National Guard MP attached to 3rd ACR at FOB Rifles East in Habbaniyah in 2003. I met my BF there who was an 11B in 1st ID there.

Bulldog22

Perfect example OG. I bet you left the states with IBAS and everything else, didnt you? You probably got a shower every other day as well, while in country.
Dont dog the PSG. I was a section sergeant Bulldog22, 1/10 Cav, 4ID. I served as PSG when our PSG was out. 99% of the PSGs in a cav troop or other combat unit wear holy socks so the young guys can have the new stuff. That is why we get the job. Hell, our maint platoon had to remove an engine from an Iraqi PC when theirs blew. We couldnt even get parts.

I also served in DesertStorm, Assassin Company, 4/34 Armor, 3ID. I did see after the war, when I got to make my first phone call home, the POS refms that were in the rear with all brand new shit, while we were wearing the same MOPP Suit for days on end. I had to tape the soles on my tanker boots. 100 mMPH Tape to be exact. So it does piss us off a little bit when we are stuck with the old beat up broken shit and we are up front and in the middle and the others get the good chow and parts and gear.

Bulldog22

3AD

Wino

HAHAHA….I was with 3rd BDE, 3ID attached to the 1ST AD and I didn’t see desert camo on anyone once we left the port except our ALO attachment. They gave us our Desert BDU’s 7 days before we got on the plane to go home so we could look good for the families getting off the plane. And none of it fit..LOL.

CI

I was 1/502d….I was peeved that we had two sets of DCUs from Oct to Apr. Guess I was one of the lucky ones in that regard. Although I can attest to the fact that DCUs appear to take on a hardened, ballistic armor quality, when going unwashed for months on end.

We didn’t have pesticide. PB pills we had. But no pesticide.

Bulldog22

Wino,
In DS, they gave us DCUs prior to flying home at KKMC and they wanted us to give them back when we got back to Mainz. We didnt of course.

“I met my BF there who was an 11B….”
Some BF, too coward to show up and make his point, to sorry to be true to his girl, (as he goes to Minn for some “strange”), and full of shit up to his forehead.

Flagwaver

Bulldog22, I was with HHC 2/162 (National Guard) attached to 1st Cav. We deployed with the 39th Arkansas Asshats in late 03 and 04. We were only in the outskirts for a week or three before being hoisted off to Baghdad.

As for DBDUs, I has my wife buy them for my soldiers on our charge card and ship them to me. I had to make some major drug deals to get GSA to reimburse her for those.

Frankly Opinionated

In the early 60’s, I was in the 101st Airborne Div. (C/1/506 ABG), and we had an average of 7 men per 11 man rifle squad. We also had in the Battle group, and S-4 Officer that saw opportunity to serve his troops. He continually put in for more gear, using the TO&E 11 man figure for his needs. Surveyed anything even remotely worn, so that if the shit did hit the fan, we would leave equipped as needed.
On maneuvers in the Phillipines, (prior to the M-14), I was amazed at how under equipped the Filipino army was. Front sights wired onto the barrel, fatiques with patches on the patches, and even a 3 legged jeep. They had an M-38, with a 4 X 4 for a left rear wheel.
Today’s Rangers tell me of shortages o’seas that is ridiculous, and most of it could be found in the rear.

ObamaGirl

@20 What are you talking about Frankly? Have you run out of Government meds already? You still have a while to go before the 1st of the month LOL!!

Bulldog22

Flagwaver,
They sent my squadron to anaconda after a bunch of rocket and mortar attacks. We were the QRF when the rockets came in. We ended up being more of a magnet then a QRF. We did get to to eat a little of their kbr chow before we left. We stayed there for a short and moved on. We never really settled anywhere for long. Before that we were sitting on the East Side of Tikrit, across the river, working the AO to keep the attacks off of 4ID HQ.
As far as wives, if it wasnt for my wife that year, I dont know what I would have done. She sent me everything she could and more. Mail was slow, but always put a smile on my face.

Is the story I heard true that Jimi Hendrix was 101st in the early 60s? I always thought it was BS, but you would know more than I.

malclave

I’ll joke about being proud to have been an REMF (I was a 92B “medical laboratory specialist” in the late 80s), but I always knew that my job was to support the guys in combat arms doing theirs.

2-17AirCav

I think I wasn’t at Campbell a week before I heard the Hendrix stuff. There was a place for troops to play, somewhere near the bowling alley as I recall and word was Hendrix used to jam there before he got tossed. I never bothered to check the story out.

Back in those days, being NG meants always having to say you were sorry. Obamagirl reminds me why that was so.

Bulldog22

to OG,
If you really were in the NG, and if you really did serve in Iraq, why in the hell would you even want to be associated with 0bummer? How can you not understand what the left thinks of you? What goes on in the head of a vet that votes for the left? What could the left possibly have that a vet wants? Hell, the bastards are now trying to take away retirement from us.

PurpleDragon

This is slightly off topic but somewhat related.

You could have been guarding a supply dump with to few men and no back-up ever coming which is the beginning of the the story in, IIRC THE LAST CENTURION by John Ringo.

It’s a very good read that I think most of you will enjoy and will cause O’girl’s head to explode.

@28 – Ah the old there aren’t liberals in the military/the left hates the military canard.

It never gets old…..really.

Bulldog22

CI,
No, it isnot abunch of BS. Oh I know there are libs in the military. I heard them all aplaud 0bummer like he was a fricking rock star at Hood after the shooting.
Does the left hate the military? IMHO, yes. I served under Reagan, Bush1, clinton, clinton, Bush2, Bush 2. I know when I am hated. Reagan never paid troops to get out! I know that when bush is out of office and still has time for the troops, he liked us. I know, I havent seen clinton around a base since…….. They despise the troops, because they know that they can never win the military vote. That is why you see military ballots from overseas disapearing in areas where libs run the voter offices

CI

@31 – I served under the same Administrations, never felt hated. Still don’t, serving as a Contractor.

You have my sympathies for your career long perception.

ObamaGirl

@28 Oh and the right and republicans care about the military? They only use it as their coroporate strong arm. Who profited the most from Iraq? Dick Cheneys old company? How many prominent conservatives have served? And the ones who have like John McCain and Chuck Hagel you all hate because they dared to question Bush. The reason why alot of people didn’t have the equipment they needed was becasue like Rummy said “You go to war with the Army you have not the Army you want” If Obama said something like you all would be shitting kittens

2-17AirCav

Liberals in the Army are rare. Liberals in the Marine Corps are rarer. As for the remaining branches, I’m not sure about the Air Force but I understand that the US Avy is the most liberal. (Used to be called the Navy but that was before the highest-ups banned all words beginning with the letter N.)

CI

@33 – Experiences, like opinions, will vary. They weren’t a rarity in the Infantry….not my units anyway. Haven’t met a Marine who I knew was a Democrat….so I can’t make any determination there.

jcrue

Sorry you all didn’t get the gear you needed until too late. I wonder though how much of a difference would it have made had you gotten everything you needed?

My brand new chocolate chip stuff? I bought it all at Saigon Sam’s outside LeJeune on my own dime and didn’t wear anything that was intended for combat Marines.

However the anti-pogue portion of your rant seems a bit broad in my opinion.

As for Dems in the Marines, we have some. They are all WMs I think….

DirtyMick

OG you were in the National Guard, You’re a female, an MP, an obama supporter and you’re probably fat. Ya you definitely got banged out by the grunts when they came back off mission. I bet you’re like a deployment 7 and a stateside 2.

Talking about? Your bf? Is this the same bf that you come on here to (?)defend(?), the one who claims service that he can’t back up? The bf who is going to have backup when he casually shows his creds? The one who is a no show? The one we all know as Sphincter?
Unless you are a common thief and stole your handle, you are the one I am talking to. POG.

Bulldog 22:
I was at Ft. Campbell most of the time between 9/60 and 4/64, except for TDY (schools), maneuvers, etc, and never heard about Hendrix. One company commander in my Battle Group was Captain Bobby Lane, QB for the Detroit Lions, my platoon leader was the son of Robt. McNamara, but other than them, I don’t recall any celebrities being stationed there.

Elric

Glad OG had the time to find herself a “boyfriend” while deployed. Probably met him at the Green Bean or Baskin Robbins.

Desert Storm E/2/2 ACR. Didn’t see anyone outside our cav troop from December to April…excepting Iraqis. Same story, guys with boots held together by tape, uniforms falling apart. Not even MREs…just Dinty Mores and shelf bred. Been without real food so long we all got sick when we finally got back to KKMC. Issued chocolate chips two days before redeploying and were ordered to sew all our patches on by hand before getting on the plane home.

Kind of hard for NCOs to find equipment for their soldiers when they are out in the middle of nowhere. But a fuckin REMF wouldn’t know anything about that.

As an XO/S3 we forced all the staff to strip all of their goochy attachments off of their weapons and give it to the line troops until every scout had what they needed.

OWB

Well, I kinda wish she’d leave that crap at the door. She is the type that made life difficult for the rest of us gals who went to work and went to war for the same reasons all the guys did who weren’t drafted.

Duty. Honor. County.

Nope. Nothing in there about whining. We did what needed to be done, under all sorts of conditions, some days with enough equipment to do it well. I earned my pay and my retirement as did most folks posting here.

To those who made our lives miserable back in the day – good riddance.

Wino

Bulldog, I think it was KKMC were we got our DBDU’s also right before we went to Kobar Towers. We burned up all the shit houses and temp showers and Top was pissed, we were supposed to take them back to some depot LOL. Right after that it was a day or two at Kobar Towers then flight back to Frankfurt and on to Aschffenburg.

NHSparky

Baskin Robbins? KBR mess halls?

Fresh milk? Mail? Sunlight?

Fuckin spoiled bitches. LOL. At least Achmed hasn’t figured out how to swim yet.

TopGoz

I was a POG during Desert Shield and Desert Storm and we were issued our chocolate chips before we left the States on 3 Sep 90. I’m sorry the Army didn’t take care of you latecomers, but your bitch is with them, not those of us who had zero input in such matters.
I never did see any pesticides, nor do I have any delusions about suffering any sort of syndrome from DS/S, OIF or OEF.
And for all you non-POGs (i.e., Grunts), especially my fellow Marines, in regards to the close air support, you’re welcome.

Mr. Chips

I was a medic in 1st Cav during Desert Storm. We were issued 2 sets of chocolate chip uniforms a few days before we deployed. We never got the desert boots or any new uniforms while on deployment, unless you count the couple of cases of Iraqi army issue boots that we liberated (if you were a size 9, you were in luck).
When I went to Baharain for Passover (nothing like celebrating a Jewish holiday in an Arab country) the 1CD contingent, along with most of the other troops from more forward units, noticed that the POG’s all had new desert boots, new uniforms (desert), etc., while we were wearing our least unserviceable stuff. At least some of them felt a bit sheepish about the disparity.
After a beer or ten, however, we really didn’t care.

Bulldog22

We all bitch about not having the shit we needed, but deep down inside, we wouldnt have it any other way. That is how it is when you are a trooper. Suck it up and drive on. We only bitched when we were done with the mission.
Give a trooper a mission and half the equipment he needs and he will make it happen some how.
I do remember that it was uphill both ways when we ran PT!!!

crucible

(USMC 2nd Med during DS here) I wasn’t a grunt, but I went through the breach at zero dark thirty with the main ground attack into Kuwait just the same and MLRS’s firing over my head. Like jcrue above stated, we had to buy-with our own money mind you-desert covers out in town before we shipped over as there were none to issue us. (We were given one set of desert cammies before deploying-used. I still have them and it’s still easy to see were the oil rain drops hit them by all the little black splotches that wouldn’t wash off). The MOPP suit I was issue before going over had holes in the outer package from rats. When I spoke up and said WTF, I was told that’s all they had to give so suck it up (I stole another from an Army supply depot when I got there-along with a lot of bottled water an other things we needed bu didn’t have-thanks guys!) The FLAK jacket (no real body armer then) I was issued was two sizes or so too small and I couldn’t close the damn thing, nor find one to swap, so I sucked that up. (Did I mention I tried to quit smoking then and that was a bad friggen time to try it? Going to MOPP 4 multiple times before the ground war even started for real, I was rather like Lloyd Bridges in Airplane.) We did get desert boots, but that was literally right before getting ont he plane home-gotta look good for the cameras don’t cha know. I don’t know about GWS as a syndrome, but I can say that there were numerous times our chemical detection folks had real alarms for airborne nerve agent, and that we came across a couple of instances of piles of dead sheep/goats in the middle of the desert, with no visble wounds. Correlation is not caussation and all that, but it was wierd. As was the experimental drugs we were told to take and that sickened more than a few folks (even the docs stopped… Read more »

Wow Jonn, you’ve broken the hearts of many pog’s and REMF’s out there who thought you had their back here, lol.

They’ll regroup no doubt.

Obamahater

Who the fuck is this cunt?

To the Top!

Clearly she never actually deployed but stayed back in the rear. I can’t claim to have gone through what you guys did in Desert Storm, etc. as I cam in the surge 2006. However I do know what it is like having no boots or servicable uniforms as they are full or holes, no soles, etc. Walking for hours and hours with gorilla glue and 100 mph soles suck. My IBA? SAPI plates that cracked after getting in a rollover so my vest fit better than before. Having to tie your body armor shut because it just doesnt fasten anymore. Good times. Obamaslut just fucking whines and whines and needs to hurry the fuck up and croak to be honest.
