House Democrat: Trillions for reparations is a moral obligation
Summer Lee, a Democratic representative, plans to roll out a resolution titled “Reparations Now Resolution.” Lee argued that reparations are both a legal and moral obligation for Americans. Lee’s resolution calls for spending trillions of dollars to this cause. Lee also claimed that President Trump’s policies are “anti Black” on steroids and insinuates that the direction that Trump is taking the country is inconsistent with the direction she feels we should go.

A House Democrat plans to introduce a resolution calling for the U.S. to spend trillions of dollars on reparations for Black Americans this week.
Rep. Summer Lee, D-Pa., plans to introduce the Reparations Now Resolution on Thursday. Lee met with other lawmakers and activists on Capitol Hill on Tuesday at an event titled “Why We Can’t Wait: Advancing Reparative Justice in Our Lifetime.” She argues that reparations are a “moral and legal obligation” for Americans.
“This is a moment in time where societies are shaped [and] new societies are built. We should be the ones who are shaping it,” said Lee.
“Their real intention is to build up whatever comes next in their image,” she said, referring to the Trump administration, “and we better fight like hell to make sure that we’re building it in our image.”
Lee added that “it took nothing but a stroke of a pen,” for President Donald Trump to dismantle diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs across the federal government.
“That’s why we recognize that the fight to restore Black folks has to be so much more substantive,” she added.
Lee’s resolution cites U.S. slavery, Jim Crow laws, and other racially discriminatory laws and policies to justify spending trillions of dollars supporting the descendants of Black Americans in the U.S.

Here’s my 2 cents: when does it stop and how can you possibly determine who is eligible or how much they get? By stop, I mean this near-endless “apology” tour that some have decided needs to be their priority. What about the Chinese or Irish? What about blacks that owned people? Why should someone who never was even remotely associated with slavery now could have their money given to another person that never suffered harm? Next, which black people? All of them? Those with at least 3 ancestors that were slaves? What if the ancestor sold slaves, as some Africans did? Do they need to pay as well? This endless need to apologize and “make good” is nothing more than virtue signaling, and all it does is continue to enflame passion and vitriolic thinking.
Playing the devil’s advocate here, repression, racism, segregation, systemic racism and straight up nastiness was still very widespread in the US 100 years after the last shot was fired in the Civil War. If someone showed up in 1920 and was the wrong skin color it didn’t matter, they were colored and treated as such. The fact that an equal rights struggle had to take over 100 years is quite telling.
Not my problem. Not only was I not alive 120 – 300 years ago, very few individuals I know were. I posit that this systematic discussion is pushed to keep individual citizens apart from one another. Once one apologizes for something one has no control over – how far back should this be done? Who is accountable? Who gets the “goods”?
There is no way to sort that fairly for payers or payees.
Should Eve apologize to Adam when she said eat this? Is that how far back we have to go?
Weren’t black people sold into slavery by other blacks, only to be bought up by black slave owners in the new world? Will black descendants of black slave owners be willing to pony up a few bucks for their role in all this?

I wonder if ole Summer Lee would agree that the American Indians had their land taken from them and in some cases still live on reservations to this day and thus deserve a slice of his pie? Didn’t all slaves have the option to return to Africa after the war? Wasn’t that why Liberia was founded? Not sure why anyone else should be responsible for the decisions they made. If this had been proposed immediately after the war and compensated actual slaves, that’d be a different thing, but this ship has long since sailed. Equal rights struggles have taken as long or longer in other parts of the world, or for other groups, and at this point, the entire concept is bullshit. My ancestors were greeted with “Irish need not apply” signs everywhere, yet they persevered and overcame, instead of playing the victim..

General Order #15 issued by General William Sherman gave 40 acres and a mule to every former slave family. Most never saw it, those that did see it often lost it in lawsuits and then were forced into sharecropping arrangements. Those that did well with it were often either lynched or driven off by the klan once the Army departed.

If i remember correctly there were reparations made to those Japanese who were interned in WW2 by the US. Those who were still alive in the mid-1980s recieved something from the government.

Plessy v Ferguson was their basis for separate but equal aka segregation. They instituted Jim Crow Laws, the poll tax, and fought against Civil Rights with record setting filibusters. Trapped blacks in inner large inner cities run by Democrats with failing schools and a welfare state that rewards staying poor. They tried the ‘Party Switch’ strategy that only they believed. Somehow, I can’t figure out why, but blacks have been voting 75% plus for Dems since FDR, but they’re still in the same place. Latinos and Asians have blown past them as new immigrants, but they stay loyal to the Dems…though some a seeing the light with Trump. Hell, the Dems are trying to steal Abe Lincoln from the Republicans. If anybody owes blacks in this country reparations, it’s the Democratic Party.

Take the money from what the Federal and State governments plan on giving to Planned Parenthood. Well not “all were losing their shit”, the only Confederate statue I like is “Dual Destiny” located in Winston County Alabama. When Alabama seceded from the union to fight for slavery; Winston County had practically no slaves and no use for the war so they seceded from Alabama and established the free state of Winston.
Their statue looks a bit different and is more reflection of their war experience.
