House passes bill requiring proof of U.S. citizenship

| April 11, 2025 | 21 Comments

The House passed a bill mostly along party lines that would require proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote. This would be applicable to federal elections. Almost all Democrats voted against the bill while some joined the Republicans. The Democrats argued that this bill would disenfranchise voters. The Republicans argued that this measure would help restore confidence in our voting system. This is the second attempt that the Republicans made to pass this bill. The Democrats controlled the Senate during the first attempt, so the bill didn’t pass then. This year, the Democrats have the filibuster option to fight back.

From AP News:

“It pushes women out of the democratic process,” she said of the documentation requirement. “And it’s not a coincidence. It’s part of a strategy to make voting harder, to sow distrust in our elections.”

Democrats also said the bill would disproportionately affect older people in assisted care facilities, military service members who wouldn’t be able to solely use their military IDs, people of color and working-class Americans who may not have the time or money to jump through bureaucratic hoops.

“The SAVE Act is everything our civil rights leaders fought against,” said Rep. Nikema Williams, a Democrat from Georgia.

Republicans have defended the legislation as necessary to restore public confidence in elections and say it allows states to adopt procedures to help voters comply. They have disputed Democratic characterizations of the bill.

Four Democrats voted in favor of the legislation: Reps. Ed Case of Hawaii, Henry Cuellar of Texas, Jared Golden of Maine and Marie Perez of Washington.

“The truth is, those who were registered to vote would still be able to vote under their current registration,” said Rep. Chip Roy, a Texas Republican who sponsored the bill. “We have mechanisms giving the state fairly significant deference to make determinations as to how to structure the situation where an individual does have a name change, which of course is often women.”

On Thursday, Roy said Cleta Mitchell, a key figure in Trump’s campaign to overturn the 2020 election results, “had a significant hand in what we’re doing here.” Mitchell, a longtime GOP lawyer, has played a central role in coordinating the movement to tighten voting laws across the country.

Every other country in the world…

Of course.

Hack Stone

India requires a government issued photo identification in order to vote, but that is because they are racist to people of color.

Hack Stone

It’s racist to require a government issued photo identification in order to vote.

But it is not racist to require a government issued photo identification to board an airplane.

But it is not racist to require a government issued photo identification to purchase alcohol or tobacco.

But it is not racist to require a government issued photo identification to cash a check.

But it is not racist to require a government issued photo identification to enter a government building.

A better example would be the requirements to carry a pistol that are in force in many states. That is at least a constitutional right and the above are not.

Many places in the US the purchase of alcohol is still illegal, no matter how old you are. No bank is required to give you a checking account, no airline can be forced to let you fly.

SFC D

It is not racist to require a government issued photo identification to receive federal benefits, i.e. welfare.

How about the demoRat national convention.

Allowing non-citizens to vote in any election is not only allowing the camel to get it’s nose under the tent, it is opening up the tent flap to let the camel move in.

Not a citizen? You can’t vote…period!

Strangely Mexico requires proof of citizenship AND photo ID to register to vote.

Where is our resident communist narcissist to explain and apologize all of this away? Is he still in “I’m never coming back here again phase VIIb”?

Reciprocity is on Monday. Call or email your Congress critter and let them know your eye is on the ball on that one too.

When I struggle to understand the left, I tune into NPR or one of the Progressive stations to hear what they think. This one about requiring proof of citizenship to vote disenfranchising women really had me puzzled.

The straight-faced argument is women change their names when they marry and then it doesn’t match their birth certificate.

I almost drove off the road laughing. Or because my IQ was dropping listening to the rantings of the insane.

The bottom line is that D-rats want it to be easy for their people to vote illegally so they can win elections. All their rationalizations are bogus.

That’s the best they could hatch and all the media folk got the talking point memo.

How does this make things tougher on women. Both my sisters have figured out how to get a Goverment ID, they also figured out how to join the Army and the Air Force.

I’m sure he was referring to democrat women (Karens). Women like Pochahantis E Warren types. Too stupid to even know they’re not Indian. How could they possibly figure out how to get an ID, all the instructions at voting locations is confusing. Things like get your ID at your Dept of Motor vehicles. Free. It’s tough for a demoncrat to figure that out.

Say, why didn’t we have this before?

Democrats, that’s why.

My doctor’s office now requires an ID at every visit. Patients are fraudulently using insurance of other people. (Possibly illegal immigrants using false IDs are involved) My last ER visit they wanted a picture id and insurance info up front.
And you can use a military ID for voting, at least in WI.

WTF! For reals even? Seriously I can’t even think up scams like this. I really am a frigging Boy Scout…well, except for all those WestPacs and some things that may have happened in the PI.

But people wouldn’t do that– Democrsts said so why trying to refute fraud DOGE found with Social Security! /sarc
