Charles Layton; phony Korean War POW

| June 11, 2017

Someone sent us a link to the story that Charles Layton told to KFOR4 in Indiana about his time serving in the Korean War with the 22nd Ranger Battalion, the 7th Infantry Division, the 2d Infantry Division and his 18 weeks as a POW.

In the early 1950s, he spent four months in captivity in the bitter cold, suffering daily beatings.

“The pain was so intense,” said Layton. “I couldn’t speak for several days. I wish I could rip it from my memory, out of my head. Even with shoes on, I can still feel the pain.”

The memories, now 65 years old, haunt him still.

“I knew I had to do it for us to escape. I had no alternative but to kill the guards,” he said. “Taking somebody’s life is not a happy memory, and I felt tremendously guilty and carried that guilt a long, long, long time.”

He thought he was going to die.

“They were butchers,” Layton told CBS4. “They would slap you. They would hit you. They would punch you. They would kick you.”

He survived, and so did dozens of others because of his heroism. He led a group of POWs into the fight for their lives.

“When the guards came on duty and got warm and they were intoxicated, we made a noise at the back guard. And he came in and we took him down,” said Layton.

It took more than 60 years for the hero to share the story. No one knew, including his wife and children, until he wrote it in his book.

Yep, the stories didn’t start until he wrote a book “Escaped with Honor” about his experiences as a soldier and a POW.

Lucky for him, it looks like his records were destroyed in the famous National Archives records Fire of 1973;

Even Senator Richard Lugar’s office couldn’t help;

They were able to confirm that Layton served;

Someone we know was able to read his book and they tell us that the timeline of the events are fairly erratic. He was drafted in November and by March, Layton was on his way to Korea. Between November and March, he supposedly went through basic training, infantry training and then he went to Ranger School (which was 60 days in 1951) and graduated as a Military Operative – such a Military Occupational Specialty didn’t exist in the 1950s.

Layton also claims in his book that on the boat ride to Korea, he and another soldier decided to take a dip in the ocean while the ship was underway – they dived over board and then climbed back on the ship. Totally legit.

In the book, he claims that in Korea he was assigned to BOTH the 2nd Infantry Div AND the 7th Armored Division. The 7th Armored Division was inactivated on October 11, 1945 in New York City. In the article, he claims he was assigned to the 22nd Ranger Battalion. The Ranger Association says that there has never been a 22d Ranger Battalion.

Layton claims that he was awarded a Purple Heart for his wounds (hit in left forearm, right leg, and torso according to the video at the link), that the pain from those wounds haunt him every day. But not enough to ask the VA for treatment. He filed for proof of his service for compensation for his sole injury in 1994 – hearing loss and tinnitus;

No one can find any proof of his Purple Heart award. In his book, Layton claims that his family was notified that he was Missing in Action, but the DPAA lists only one Layton who was Missing – Robert Van Layton whose remains were recovered in 2004 and returned in 2006;

If his family had been notified, there would be some kind of record somewhere in the Defense Department, but there’s not.

Here are some screen shots of his claims from the video;

The point of the article is that Layton is looking for the other 3 dozen POWs he helped to escape, but he doesn’t know the name of even one, because they were dirty and bearded. Apparently, people who are bearded and dirty don’t share their names with each other.

To me, it looks like he discovered that his records were lost in the 1973 fire and set out to create a record for himself.

Even with his shoes ON!

He can still feel it in his head people!

There is no shortage of those who will crap on honorable service and steal valor from the deserving. Since we cannot kick their teeth in, all we can do is pity them.

What’s next, is he going to recall his seekrit missions in Paprika and/or getting shot down over Macho Grande?

terrorologist

“Over Macho Grande??”

“No, I don’t think I’ll ever be over Macho Grande…”

Hondo

It’s easy to get over Macho Grande. Just have a competent pilot (that rules out certain disbarred lawyers, of course) fly over this location:

He is looking for someone dirty and bearded? Has he thought of reaching out to Daniel Bernath?

Like our boy Chris Ford…

Charles Layton has seen things you wouldn’t believe.

Fire ships off the should of…
See Bees or C-Beams glittering near the Tannhauser Gate.

Moments lost!

Oh yeah and his book got 6 reviewers giving him 5 stars. Surprisingly, nobody is calling him a phony.

John Robert Mallernee

@ C 2 SHOW:

Since you wrote that, at least two comments have been posted there stating that the story is false, and Charles Layton is a fraud who is stealing valor from real Korean War heroes and Prisoners of War.

C2Show

Good! need enough reviewed to wipe out those fake 5 star reviews

From above “In the book, he claims that in Korea he was assigned to BOTH the 2nd Infantry Div AND the 7th Armored Division.”

However, on the hearing loss document it states under the column of “Organization to which assigned” = “HEADQUARTERS 7TH INF DIV ATTY”

jack goodwin

It is heartbreaking that real Korean War POWs like Jack Goodwin have to even comment on stories of Stolen Valor like this. God bless all of our REAL POWs of the Forgotten War.

Sparks

Thank you, Sir, for your service and your sacrifice. God Bless both you and your family.

USMCMSgt (Ret)

Are DPAA’s records accurate?

I looked up Jack Goodwin and didn’t see his name there.

MrBill

DPAA’s Korean War “accounted-for” list is incomplete – http://valorguardians.com/blog/?p=62516

So I wouldn’t draw any conclusions about Mr. Goodwin based on that.

USAFRetired

Hondo posted an article archived under the Military Records tab at the top of the page.

Here’s an extract

On the DPAA Vietnam “Accounted-For” lists, those who escaped captivity and who returned alive from same are included in those lists; they are explicitly identified by their status code as having returned at the end of the war or to have escaped. (They’re also broken out on separate lists for ease of review.) In contrast, the Korean lists do not appear to include those US POWs who returned alive during/after the war, or who may have escaped from captivity during the war itself and returned to US control.

What first tipped me off (some time ago) regarding this issue was when I looked at the consolidated Korea “Accounted For” list and found it had around 300 names (even today it only shows 322 names). This is far less than 10% of the number of US POWs documented to have returned alive during or at the end of the Korean War.

justsayin

Jack P. Goodwin is a confirmed returnee. Captured July 5, 1950, released/liberated Aug 29, 1953.

Claw

Yep. He was assigned to the 4th Platoon, C Company, 1/21 Infantry, Task Force Smith.

Gimlets Forever!

just type in jack goodwin korean pow and you can all the proof you want

Animal

It seems things are picking up on his FB page.

Roger in Republic

I am 70 years old. When my father went of to the Korean war in 1951, I was four years old. How can a man 5 years younger than I am go to war with my father? This story is so full of holes it wouldn’t hold rocks. This ass was really too young to have seen the Vietnam war much less the Korean conflict. Shame on this lying sack of bull shit.

John Robert Mallernee

@ ROGER IN REPUBLIC:

He says he is 88 years old.

I’m 71 years old, and my father, now deceased, was in the Second World War and the Korean War.

Green Thumb

Tool.

John Robert Mallernee

Charles Layton’s FACEBOOK page has been shut down.

Animal

The FB page has gone dark. Bet there are some unpleasant conversations taking place right now.

IDC SARC

amazon has some new reviews for his book

John Robert Mallernee

@ IDC SARC:

I just now noticed that.

Green Thumb

The only intense pain this turd felt was in his ass as it was being piled on….

John Robert Mallernee

In the photograph of him wearing his Class A dress uniform, there appears to be an armor unit’s distinctive unit insignia on his cap, with “6” on it.

Sixth Armored Division?

John Robert Mallernee

The book is no longer available at the AMAZON web site.

John Robert Mallernee

The book is still advertised at the AMAZON web site, and folks can post comments about the book.

But, it’s no longer being sold.

gitarcarver

Most likely that is because the publisher is a self publishing company so they make a limited number of hard copies and that is it.

The model of self publishing is changing (indie publishing as it is now called) and many companies now offer print on demand, but the publisher still lists him on their site.

Here’s another article rockin’ the story:

http://currentnoblesville.com/sharing-his-story

The book appears to have originally be published by Wine Press, another self / indie publishing company that went out of business after accusations of mismanagement and fraud from authors and artists.

Birds of a feather, I guess.

IDC SARC

This guy says he escaped with 30 bearded dirty prisoners. The POW Network says a total of 670 escaped during the war and all of the escapes were from temporary holding facilities near the front lines. So, there’s another EEI that doesn’t fit Chuck’s narrative.

IDC SARC

You’d think an escape of 3 dozen prisoners would have been well documented and widely corroborated….but nah

David

let me guess, he got ’em out through a tunnel named Tom, Dick, or Harry?

Skippy

Well it won’t let me review the toilet paper called a book
But there is more then one way to skin a mangee dog

JACK GOODWIN

he needs to give the money he made on that book and donate it to the prisoner of war or the purple heart people

JACK GOODWIN

no you keep erasing my words

MSGT_RET

Amazon just needs to move his book over to the Fantasy section. Problem solved.

Bill

If you can hold down the vomit go to 1.09 and see the purchased Purple Heart and the POW medal.

JACK GOODWIN

he said he killed two guards and escaped with 36 other men that he does not remember not a single one of there names and he is looking for one of them to help him tell his story if he would have done what he said he done they would be looking for him to thank him for bring them out we know the # 36 is all lies that is the reason no one is coming out

Green Thumb

This turd is not even a loud queef.

More soft and shit.
