Obama won’t agree to Congress’ spending cuts

| July 28, 2013

Fox News reports that the President won’t agree to any budget that limits the government’s domestic spending nor will he negotiate with Congress’ proposals to cut spending;

[Treasury Secretary Jack Lew] also said the president was not going to accept a budget in which domestic spending is further cut to soften the blow to Defense spending.

“That’s unacceptable,” Lew, who appeared on three Sunday shows to re-enforce the president’s positions, told NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “He won’t sign that.”

Well, the president’s threats stand in stark contrast to his stance on raising healthcare costs on military retirees and reductions in military pay. He claims that he’ll veto any defense budget that doesn’t do both of those things, yet he’s immobile on domestic spending.

And at the same time he says that he’s not going to balance the budget on the backs of veterans. So, I’m still wondering what all of my veteran friends out there who thought that Obama was good for veterans and defense have to say now.

Self-delusion isn’t limited to hippie civilians, but it might be dramatically more commonplace. Either way, I don’t think anyone should be surprised by Lew’s statements. This is right out of the liberal playbook.

“So, I’m still wondering what all of my veteran friends out there who thought that Obama was good for veterans and defense have to say now. ”

Sadly, a number of fellow Soldiers have drank the Kool-Aid. When Obama was first inaugurated, my coworkers were all optimistic and generally of the opinion that it was time for “their” President to make some positive changes. I was the only white guy in the station, and I worked at a mall in a poorer section of town. Many of the stores there offered various shirts and other items aimed at enhancing Obama’s cult of personality.

Then when we started feeling the effects of the Administration change, with less than 2% pay raises and the delay in pay around April of 2010 or so, many of those coworkers grew apathetic or even outright hostile towards “their” President. One female senior NCO who had spent hours watching Obama’s speeches and appearances in early 2009 even made a statement along the lines of “he needs to stop screwing up our country” only two years later.

We Soldiers have short memories. I was at JRTC doing my duties as Sergeant-of-the-Guard election night last year. A female Soldier on guard started sharing her hopes of Obama’s reelection, and a number of officers and enlisted were openly excited when he won. I’ll ask them their opinions in another year or two and see if they have the same change of opinion my battle buddies in recruiting did.

The only cuts the POTUS will agree to make are to:

1. America’s nuclear arsenal and delivery capabilities
2. Combat organizations within DoD
3. Non-GS, non-union personnel within DoD

trillion 4 plus deficits are not just ok, but mandatory now? but we can cut defense while he wants to send troops to syria and iraq breaks down into another civil war.

this reminds me of a duffel blog article “congresswoman tells troops ‘Go F*ck yourselves’ comment taken out of context”

Oh, hey, boys and girls, this is nothing new. Most recent observations, from someone whose column I read regularly, makes some very good points: Here is the point. The summer of love is over. The sensible approach to debt escalation, which involves a combination of austerity and growth measures, is over. Countries (other than Germany) have agreed to give up on austerity measures completely as a way of returning to a balanced economic policy, in favor of only “growing themselves” out of debt. Yes, that’s right. The world will now focus on “growth” via spending, and no longer by cutting costs at all. Excuse me, but how is this any different than what led to the economic downfall of 2007-2009? It is not. Which is why we, the world, are going to once again be convinced that we can spend ourselves out of debt and into prosperity. It is a fiscal policy that is sure to win votes, but fail the people. On the surface, this is all for the well-being of the middle class. But the results of such government pronouncements in the past, under these circumstances, has been just the opposite. For a review of what happened the last time things were like this, just go back to the early 1930’s. Back then, we were going to spend ourselves out of debt and into prosperity by investing in the same government-led programs being pushed again today. It took a world war to bring us out of that economic depression. So this week we learn that Middle East peace talks with Israel and her neighbors will resume. We also learn that in the USA, Congress and the White House are headed to another showdown on the debt ceiling limit, due to arise in September. One side wants more austerity, and the other side wants only more spending. No one is backing down. Last week this columnist described the forthcoming period as “crazy.” It’s still crazy and it’s going to get crazier. World Peace or World Bankruptcy? It’s coming to a theatre near you. What was that song from the… Read more »

“America’s commitment to its veterans is not just lines on a budget. They are bonds that are sacred — a sacred trust we’re honor bound to uphold,” These are commitments that we make to the patriots who serve — from the day they enlist to the day that they are laid to rest.”

Yep, that was obamaman. Yep, that was just last year. Yep, some of you heard it with your own ears because, yep, he said those words as the VFW’s keynote speaker.

That B. Hussein 0bama Kool-Aid needs to have a warning on the package stating
“WARNING: CAUSES AMNESIA AND BRAIN DAMAGE!”.

Like JoAnn Watson said about BO: We Voted For You! Send Us The Bacon ! Emperor Barry knows which side his bread is buttered on.

Sniff … Sniff … I smell a Govt shutdown!

OWB

Fanatics, be they lefty fanatics or of some other variety, are intent on ruining this country. And since so many have been sleeping comfortably for the past 40 years or so as the fanatics have taken over just about everything in society, it looks like they will have their way with the rest of us.

Too bad. It really was a great country once upon a time. Back in the days when the productive were rewarded instead of punished.

B Woodman

Robert Heinlein has continually proved himself presentient.
I can’t find or remember where just now, but in one of his books (The Past Through Tomorrow?), in one of his stories, he talks about, gives “examples” of, and outlines The Crazy Years. We are living in those years now.

Setnaffa

I’m willing to bet there won’t be a shutdown. The Communist Party has the Stupid Party’s number. Speaker Boehner still thinks he can deal with those “rascals”…

Ex-PH2

There are too many economic and other similarities between Then (1930s) and Now (2010s). The heedlessness that permeates the current administration, and the perception that the head of state is asleep at the switch and can’t even make his own decisions, is worse than anything else. These things alone can cause an irreparable schism in this country that hasn’t ever been seen before.

just another OIF Vet

Just had my VA comp reviewed and cut from 100 to 70 for PTSD, guess I am magically cured now that the govt needs to save money. I am appealing, of course, but just further proof that 12 years and 3 deployments mean shit to the Obama administration

@12. “Speaker Boehner still thinks he can deal with those “rascals”…” That knucklehead IS one of the rascals! He just cries (literally) a great deal more than the others. He also has an R after his name. He wears a different colored tie. But all of that aside, he is a dyed-in-the-wool, lily-livered, jelly fish. At least with obamanam, we know what he is. With Kleenex Bonehead, he pretends to be something he isn’t.

Tactical Trunk Monkey

I never voted for him, and always said, after the elections, “well, I hope for the sake of our country that he has a successful presidency, but I won’t be surprised if he screws this up.”

Guess I wasn’t wrong…too bad. I really think, with his charisma, that he could have done great things for the US…too bad he went down the wrong path…

Ex-PH2

These people had great charisma: Jack Kennedy – definitely loved the job as President.

Clinton – like him or not, he at least took the job seriously

Ronald Reagan – definitely loved being the President

FDR – and he was crippled with polio

Not one of them was incompetent. That’s the difference.

OldSoldier54

@11 B Woodman : That would be Starship Troopers. It really does look like conditions are evolving to bring about “The Crazy Years,” doesn’t it?

Of course they won’t sign it. The looters and moochers gotta have their “free” shit!

Our ancestors would have been shooting by now.

Veritas Omnia Vincit

Wow, who could have predicted that a man who introduced a whopping 4 pieces of original legislation with zero executive experience would be struggling to achieve anything of worth domestically in repairing our budget troubles?

We’ve reached that point where a difficult conversation needs to take place, and neither political party is currently equipped to handle such a conversation.

They will continue to create a gridlock situation where compromise means just conceding a few elements on the fringe and not addressing a core set of issues that have been slowly bankrupting the nation. That’s hard work, it’s not sexy and it’s going to p1ss off the electorate. It’s easier to target veterans and the DoD because they don’t have enough votes to sway the election. When your votes can’t change elections, those in office don’t mind f#cking you as often as they can.

PintoNag

Until the people who cause all the pain are the ones made to suffer for it, we will continue to repeat the cycle of ecomonic idiocy.

Fjardeson

BO won’t cut domestic spending because the only way he can get anything done is to buy votes.

He knows most of the (productive) military won’t give him the time of day regardless, so why not take their funding? It’s only the defense of the United States of America, right? No one will get rough with us, right?

Uh… (teleprompter fails)

NHSparky

And this just off Drudge:

The WH is still closed to tours because of sequestration, but Obumbles is so tard from doing nothing over the last month since his last vacation he’s taking 75 staffers with him when he and the family go to Martha’s Vineyard in a few.

Sleep well, America.
