PTSD made Sam Haley steal from people

| February 9, 2012

In Fresno, CA Sam Haley who supposedly spent 22 years in the military, decided it was a good idea to start ripping people off. He lost his real estate license more than 30 years ago, but somehow he stayed in the business long enough to perpetrate a fraud on several people and now mitigates his malfeasance with his military service, which remains in question. Says ABC30;

But Haley claims he’s just a military veteran suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Haley was expecting leniency in court because of his military service, and the mental troubles he says he’s suffering. But while the judge acknowledged Haley’s PTSD, he said that wasn’t what caused Haley to commit grand theft.

And DVA social workers decided they ought to help him foist this crap on the judicial system when Haley sought treatment for his PTSD upon the occasion of his arrest;

“Mr. Haley, although he managed it well in the initial years, in the later years it became very obvious,” said Herman Barretto, a social worker with the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Yeah, nice try, Goober. The prosecutor didn’t buy it;

The judge sentenced Haley to 180 days in jail, plus five years of probation. He also ordered Haley to pay the victims more than $35,000 in restitution.

Yeah, there’s a couple of million veterans out here who suffer from PTSD and DON’T steal from people.

Thanks to Stephen for the link.

In the PTSD vein I found this link this morning:

http://rhinoden.rangerup.com/i-have-ptsd-so-what/

The thrust of the article is that “I have PTSD, so what? I manage it, and the rest of the world needs to get over it”.

Flagwaver

I have PTSD and am in rather poor financial straights, but I’m not stealing. That’s an excuse and excuses are not part of this training block.

Poohbah, Lord High Everything Else

Reading this has caused me to suffer severe PTSD. I think I’ll go down and steal from the local Occutards–they don’t believe in private property anyway, so it wouldn’t be stealing, right?

Pretty disgusting…

It is so sad how PTSD as a term and concept has been so cheapened in our society by these people, both veterans and non veterans alike.

It keeps feeding itself and growing and growing.

Now everyone and their brother automatically claims PTSD.

From the veteran whose entire service consisted of serving mess at the chow hall, to the stolen valor types who never served one minute in the armed services, PTSD is the cure all for whatever ails you.

I truly wonder how many in the military claim PTSD and get benefits from it, that never served in a combat role or in theaters of combat.

Just Plain Jason

Having PTSD is not an excuse for bad behavior. This shit needs to stop we have a responsibility to combat this perception. I was an asshole and treated a lot of people poorly, but that wasn’t because of my PTSD. My PTSD my have been a factor, but I am the one in control of me. Until, we as a group start holding ourselves and others accountable this shit won’t stop.

@Tman: PTSD isnt just from combat. In my PTSD support group we have folks who were never in combat but still have some pretty serious issues. Theres a female who has PTSD from being raped and some guys who have PTSD from some of the wonderful places our government has sent them that werent considered to be combat zones. Hell even cops, firemen, and paramedics can have PTSD.

@JPJ: Youre right we are in control of ourselves regardless of whether we have PTSD or not. See the problem is that if we can blame everything on something else we dont have to be responsible for ourselves and it makes it easier to just be an asshole.

@5 someone in my unit claimed PTSD I know that he doesn’t have it and is bullshit claim. He is already a POS soldier half assing jobs. Our mission was convoy security in Iraq. He stated that he was able to the PTSD claim that each time going out of the wire was so stressful. Never once hit a IED. Just goes to show that there are people who just say they have it for the money.
