Smells like BS
Patrick and Alan both sent us a link to an NPR broadcast they heard on the radio on the way home about a guy who calls himself Leo Webb and claims he was a sniper. And “watched half my squadron die” – whatever the hell a squadron is, since he says he was in the Army. It doesn’t help his case that he’s at Occupy Oakland. There’s no record of a Leo Webb on AKO, not that it means anything, there could be several reasons why he’s not there, but it doesn’t help him with me;

Snipers and SDMs do see faces
Umm…the Army has plenty of squadrons…cavalry squadrons in all heavy and Stryker brigades and two Cavalry Regiments with six subordinate squadrons. So they are out there or else I’ve been in the wrong place for a major portion of my career.
There is a lot of confusion in the First Cav Division at Hood where infantry and armor battalions have kept the name, honors, and lineage of units that were once true cavalry squadrons.
I’m pretty sure that with the exception of the Custers 7th Cav and 1/7 Cav at LZ Xray in Nam, we haven’t had any squadrons close to being overrun or becoming combat ineffective due to casualties.
And Jeff, +1. I always thought that was part of the psych screening for snipers was the ability to kill even after growing very familiar with your target before killing someone in a deliberate act even though they were not an immediate threat to yourself.
SFOD-D has squadrons… but this guys cleary is full of shit and wasnt with them. He deserves a medal for his chest… a lead metal.

I was in a squadron when I was in the Army.
It was a long time ago, 1974, at Fort Hood, Texas.
I was a scout in “C” Troop, 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division.
But, other cavalry units I was in were designated “company” and “battalion”, and I don’t know why.
So, go figure.
Back then, a Cavalry Scout was MOS 11 D 20, but they’ve changed that, so I don’t know what it is now.
Also, back then, a scout automatically got his spurs, just by being in that MOS.
But, today, spurs have to be EARNED, by completing a “Spur Ride”.
When I was in, we reconnoitered just like the “RAT PATROL” on television, in jeeps fitted with pedestal mounted M-60 machine guns, two jeeps per scout team, three men in each jeep, a driver, observer, and gunner.
Boy, I loved doing that!
Our distinctive uniform consisted of spurs, a black beret, and a traditional brass “US” belt buckle.
Other variations of scout vehicles (because the Army was trying to figure out the best way to do that job) were the M-551 Sheridan tank (a failure), the M-113 Armored Personnel Carrier fitted with a TOW missile, M-2 machine guns, and M-60 machine guns, motorcycles mounted on the sides of UH-1 “Iroquois” helicopters, and the M-114 Scout vehicle (a failure).
Anyway, all that stuff was a long time ago, and I ain’t got no idea what cavalry scouts are doing these days.

He pitched AA for the Cubs? I don’t know much about baseball, but I’m pretty certain that the fucking Cubs aren’t AA. Also, how does one get hurt so bad they can’t play baseball, but then finds themselves in the Army as a Sniper? You’ve got to be a little bit of a badass to be a sniper.
Not going to find very many reluctant snipers. I did a bit of time attached to the Grunts in the Corps, and have the privledge to actually be in an Infantry Battalion for 3 1/2 years and two pumps. As I recall every time there was an opening in The Scout Sniper Platoon there were about 15-20 Volunteers at least per each spot. They were all hard-chargers. The idea of randomly snatching some poor kid out of a rifle platoon or admin and making him a sniper is unreal.

hey i used to be engaged to that guy. as soon as i saw that story i knew it was bullshit. the only thing true he said was he had a daughter, with me. and we have not heard from him in 13 years thank god!!! i know for a fact he has never been in the military, never played for cubs, and does not even try to contact his daughter. i am always listed. he does not know how to dial 411 either. the only thing he is good for is drinking, drugs, prison, yep every one up and down the california coast, oh and beating up woman. so there you have it boys thats you hero. the ex katrina

with all of these army ranger sniper special forces SEAL commandos coming home from the army and navy… who in the hell was fixing equipment, processing paperwork, packing chutes, flying transports, driving trucks, fixing meals, issuing supplies digging holes, building bridges/roads/FLS, etc?

Also, the Army DOES have a squadron. They are the Golden Knights Who Say Ni-Wop.
Ex-PH2: don’t think those are encouraged either. I was never a sniper, but as I understand it the idea is to send the guy to see Allah posthaste vice trying to make him a living Darwin Award candidate. (smile)
I was in a Cavalry Squadron when I retired at Bragg in November…. 4th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment (and our C Troop had a sniper platoon).
I’m not saying the guys not a turd wrapped in an enigma just saying the Army does have Squadrons and in an Airborne BDE they number about 400 troopers…so about 1/2 the Sqdr would have been about 200ish (Pretty sure that would have been front page news)

The really sad thing is NPR swallowed this phony’s story because it fit their Liberal left-wing agenda, They wanted it to be true.
I could see faces through my ACOG, what kind of magical scope did he have that he could clearly see his targets, reach out and touch them, but not see their face? Other than that minor detail, I’m sure hes legit…
In the Cavalry, a Squadron is our designation for a Battalion.
Just as a Troop is our designation for a Company.
Or as in the Artillery a Battery is the same as a Company.
