The folks at POW Network sent us their FOIA results on Michael Jeffrey “Rock” Harris. We wrote about the super-soldier here, here, here, here and here. In the interview that he did with Jane Moon of the Fayetteville Observer, he claimed the following list of awards and medals;
3 PH
2 SS
1 BSM
23 ARCOMs
31 AAM
6 Overseas Service ribbons for combat
His records say a little different;
His records say he was awarded a Bronze Star Medal with a “V” device for service in the Gulf War, however, his BSM award says that he was received it for merit not for valor – there’s a difference;
He claimed he was a sniper in the Ranger Regiment, but his records say he was a 13B artilleryman in an artillery unit;
So that’s almost like being a Ranger sniper – only completely different. And, oh, yeah, during his exploits in Somalia, he was an NBC NCO in a National Guard unit in High Point, NC – almost as dangerous as a sniper in Mogadishu, wouldn’t you say?
Category: Phony soldiers
Whether he received the Bronze Star Medal for valor or for merit, it’s still a damn high award, and he should have just been proud of that. He should have been proud of having served his country, in combat, in a combat arms unit. Instead of making shit up, and stealing the valor of a dead guy.
Douche. Bag.
Why the hell is it NEVER enough with these guys?
I know, Sparky, I wonder the same thing.
But now that I look at the certificate more closely, doesn’t his name look off-centered in the narrative? It almost looks as if a name was whited out and his name added.
I don’t know, Jonn, I will have to look at one of mine and see if it does the same thing. I know that some 71Ls would whip those out without being too concerned about lining them up better on awards certificates. That’s just my take.
Looks identical to the ARCOM I got for Desert Storm, funny, the verbage is damn near word for word….must have some template they use for that stuff!
I looked at my AAM and it’s not like that, but then, again, I don’t know if thy had these pre-printed and just filled in the blanks but they didn’t do that on my AAM or GCM.
@Jonn There have been desk pilots who were able to get bogus decorations put into their record. The way to spot those is to cross-check the general order number on the decoration with the order records in the national archives in Maryland. Something tells me however, that if the Rock were going to put a bogus medal on his record, he would have aimed higher than a BSM. Of course this is a guy who was actually in the Army but thought he could get away with claiming 23 ARCOMS. Also Jonn, don’t forget to add his DSC to his bogus claims.
What a dipstick! That was a damn decent service record he had there (I think)somebody tell me if I’m wrong. Shit he definitely screwed the pooch, big time screwed the pooch!
No Street,
That was a fine service record, certainly better than mine…effing loser…
Wow, they gave out Bronze Stars to Corporals for doing their job in DS/DS – they’d be lucky to get an AAM these days…
Dipshit aside, I’ve been to Highpoint and I would venture to say on a Saturday night after a bender on high grain alcohol there are certain sections of town that are pretty damn dangerous. Maybe not Mogadishu dangerous, but at least Hells Kitchen dangerous.
1 Bronze Star, 5 Army Commendations, and 4 Army Achievements in 9 years of service….subtract time served for bootcamp and this guy was getting an award every 10 months or so.
Why try to embellish that?
Yeah, that record was nothing to sneeze at. No one below E8 got a BSM on our deployment in ’06.
