Makin’ Movies of Themselves
We give Hollywood (and much of the rest of the entertainment industry) well-deserved grief for generally being a bunch of self-centered left-leaning j-holes unconcerned with reality. But that’s hardly unique to today; we’re hardly the first to do so. It’s been obvious for decades.
Give this a listen if you like – it was released more than 45 years ago. IMO the late Walter Becker and Donald Fagen had them pegged. (Fair warning: the lyrics contain a single occurrence of a word that is generally considered highly NSFW/around prudes, children or clergy at approximately 3:54. Consider this and your environment if you choose to listen.)
I’d probably have found Becker and Fagen too far left for my taste politically as acquaintances. But the duo were perceptive indeed.
I’m still kicking myself for not seeing Steely Dan in a small venue when I had the chance 3 or 4 years ago – while Becker was still on this side of the dirt.
Category: Pointless blather, Who knows
…Becker and Fagen were unabashedly liberal, but my Gawd, could they make music.
Skunk Baxter
BAM!
While Baxter was at one time a member of Steely Dan (he left after “Pretzel Logic” when Becker and Fagen decided they’d quit touring and use studio musicians to make future albums), that’s not him playing guitar on “Show Biz Kids”. Various sources say that’s Rick Derringer.
Baxter’s an interesting dude for other reasons, though. Since the 1980s, he’s done serious high-level consulting for the IC and DoD on topics such as terrorism and missile defense. Apparently he has other skills besides guitar. (smile)
Tanks for the memories Hondo. Didn’t know that tidbit about Baxter. Like you, I liked a good portion of their music, their politics…not so much. Maybe I started turning into a crabby old man about 1980. After all I did vote for Reagan.
Yeah, I just posted that because he’s all I ever liked about Steely Dan, not that I thought he played the studio riffs on that particular song.
Of course Rick Derringer is also awesome AF!
Thanks, Hondo – now I’ve got to go back and listen to my Steel Dan albums!
