Yountville, CA Veterans’ Home under seige
According to a number of news reports, a gunman is holding three hostages at the Yountville Veterans’ Home in Napa Valley, California – the largest residential facility in the country with about 1100 residents. The media is reporting that the gunman has body armor and an automatic weapon, but you know, those terms can mean anything. One of the FBI’s Hostage Rescue Teams is on the scene and prepared to negotiate with the criminal.
From what I’ve heard, the gunman is holed up is in an area of the facility that is home to Iraq and Afghanistan veterans.
From Fox5;
Police said at least 15 to 20 shots were fired in Building G, starting about 10:30 a.m. It was not immediately clear if there were any injuries and there was little information about the shooter.
FBI sent a SWAT team to negotiate with the shooter. As KTVU’s Mark Ibanez arrived at the scene he was told by SWAT to stay behind something, “because this guy has an automatic weapon.”
From ABC7;
Sheriff John Robertson with Napa County said law enforcement knows the identity of the suspect but would not release his name. Police, he said, have tried calling the man’s cell phone but he has not answered. Robertson said they do not know what motivated the man to begin shooting or take hostages.
Larry Kamer told ABC7 News that his wife and six other women were attending a going away party for another employee when the suspect broke in with a rifle. The gunman, Kamer said, let four of the women go, including his wife, and held three hostage.
Category: Dumbass Bullshit
Been there a few times. American Legion holds a picnic there for the vets. Last time we were there they were talking about closing it, a lot of the residents were pretty upset about it. Wonder if that’s related to this.
Prayers for all involved.
Unfortunately, the media is probably just foaming at the mouth over this.
Up next, David Hogg and Emma Gonzalez will appear as expert commentators on CNN, telling anyone who will watch how it’s the fault of the NRA.
In 5…4…3…2…….
News reports I read say sadly the three women hostages were murdered by the gunman who then shot & killed himself.
Uuhhhm, isn’t having an Automatic Weapon sans registration and a Class III Permit already illegal? That and taking hostages? If the perp turns out to be an illegal alien I’m sure the State of California will apologize to him immediately.
And you can’t legally purchase an NFA/Class III/Title II firearm in The People’s Republik unless you are Hollywood… who ironically possesses the largest amount of Class III/NFA/Title II firearms in the US and has the most haters of firearms in the US and produces the most violent films and TV shows in the US starring the most anti-gun people.
I blame the NRA, Trump, and the Secretary of Education. /sarc
That being said, i hope everyone comes out of this without a scratch.
You forgot to blame the Mayor and the Dog Catcher as well!
Pleased you brought that to his attention. Had you not done that, I might have compelled to do so.

From ABC7;
“Robertson confirmed that “many bullets” were fired from both sides but reiterated that they do not know of any injuries to the hostages, suspect or deputies.”
If that means that the police were firing into the building, well, that’s phuked up.
The media: “Yes. The gunman – a known member of the terrorist organization NRA – fired tens of bullets from his AK-15 Glock.”
The truth: angry veteran that was fucked over by the VA and is in need of help but denied has an old but reliable 1911 and is about to or doing bad stuff.
They are calling it an active shooter but of course it is not. It is actually a hostage standoff.
I hope the vets are waterboarding the perp to death.
People like this jerk are the reason I will carry a $10 roll of quarters in my purse from now on.
ex-PH2…..no, hell no….get a cow magnet!!
Cow magnet – not big enough, desert.
There’s also your car keys on your key ring. Car keys, house keys, any kind of key even if it’s a blank, can be used to jab someone. Pointy things can be very painful when applied correctly.
With all the self defense tools available nowadays a roll of quarters is pretty much obsolete.
I sell rechargeable flashlight/stun gun combos for $30.00 at gun shows and flea markets. They hit with 260 million volts of zap and having experience with accidentally hitting my pinky with one I can tell you that they work extremely well.
There are also tons of things you can attach to your keys that have pointy ends on them and fit in your had quite well.
So check out self defense tools on eBay, you’ll be surprised at the stuff available.
There’s a self-defense kit I think I can get through the Wallyworld of Everything is For Sale. It has pepper spray, a cat-head shaped punching tool with pointy things, a rape whistle and maybe a stun gun.
A small cattle prod also works for me.
I do hope that this #%!@$$@##! has not hurt anyone so far, and that this ends on a positive note for the people he tried to frighten.
“I do hope that this #%!@$$@##! has not hurt anyone so far….” That’s what I am thinking about the police in this situation. Police are not trained to fire into places where innocents are being held hostage, even if they are being fired upon. Gunfire begets gunfire. It takes on a life of its own w/o command and control.
If you are small statured as you have hinted, you may find a roll of dimes easier to wrap your hand around and you will get your fist up to speed faster. It will still be effective.
Thanks, David. I’ve considered dimes, too, and I find that the papered roll of quarters is easy to handle, even when partly opened, because what the bank gets comes from the Federal Reserve Bank and is probably machined into those paper wraps.
The quarters are heavier than dimes, but I may get dimes, anyway.
Get the roll that still allows you to completely close your fist, with the face square to the back. (Likely dimes unless you have large hands)
If you strike with the fist too open, you tend to pop joints and break bone. Yours.
My Aunt used to keep a sawed off piece of pipe in her purse, cut to the length of the bag. She lived in a decaying neighborhood, and on several occasions induced major dental and hospital bills on a number of would-be muggers. She played tennis into her sixties, and had one heck of a backhand.
Don’t hit hard things (like heads) with your hand if you can avoid it. Hit hard things with -harder- things.
Do they have rolls of Eisenhower/Kennedy half-dollars? Those have got to pack a wallop.
You could ask for a roll of Sacagawea dollars, but the teller would look confused. Like when kids these days see a $2 bill.
I used to collect the Sacageweas when they first arrived on the scene. I used them for bus fare. Handy to have. I haven’t seen those in a while.
But the quarters fit right in my hand in a closed fist. I do not have itty bitty baby paws.
.380 fits really well in your hand and your pocket…..
Or the SCCY, 9mm. American made and a really well built firearm.
Also, I use a full size carabiner on my keychain. Makes a hell of a brass/aluminium knuckles.
Get them at REI Co-op.
The widely available Monkey Fist keychain is very useful at throwing ship lines to docks. They makegreat keychains.
My keychain has a 2″ chrome steel bearing inside with a 12″ lanyard.
I live in the cesspool known as “California” where if X = Fun, then you can’t have it.
The Monkey Fist appears to be legal in my cesspool as decided in People v. Golden until the Legislature needs more stuff to bitch about.
From a casual search on Google, the Monkey Fist appears to be legal in all states but I am not a lawyer nor do I play one on TV.
Quarters and socks are not illegal until the libtards cause our currency to collapse and we can’t afford socks because no currency.
According to a 25 min-old report from an NBC affiliate out there, three employees are being held by the guy and “State Senator Bill Dodd said the suspect was reportedly a veteran enrolled in the PTSD program offered at the facility, but had been asked to leave earlier this week.” For some reason, the station found it necessary to say that the suspect is armed with a rifle but it’s not known what kind. (Um, that would be the kind that dispenses bullets, but that’s just my guess. I know. They are praying it’s an AR-15 with a bump stock.)
Aren’t both essentially illegal already, along with kidnapping and shooting at a LEO?
Of course. The type of rifle used matters to the station, not to me. My belief is that the station would like the suspect to be using an AR-15. The popular talking point to be served by that is that the scary black rifles are the weapon of choice among assholes who shoot schools up and such. In that regard, why do you think pics of AR-15s are featured in every one of these stories? It’s as if the weapon is to blame for what some murdering SOB did with it. It’s part of the re-education process.
Hell, they’ll likely write the story to make it sound like the rifle made him do it.
The real lesson to be learned about the media has several parts to it.
1 – 95% of the people who work in “media” are almost intentionally uninformed. They also lie like dogs to get their ‘story’. See the Parkland school stories before and after the facts started to come out.
2 – They are more bloodthirsty than any shark ever thought of being. They almost live for blood on the pavement.
3 – The means of producing blood is less important than that it produces a blood flow. A short sword or a nail gun is just as deadly, but they don’t know about those just yet, so they use what they think they know, e.g., AR-15/bump stock/assault weapon. No one has yet explained to them that my cast iron skillet is an assault weapon if I use it that way.
4 – If something bad happens, they get to be on TV and that counts as high as the bloodlust.
Let’s see, a combat veteran needing VA help, the VA talking about closing the facility, the veteran does not take kindly to the closure or maybe how the wonderful VA serves his needs, and the noise in the background are the other combat veterans cheering him on. Otherwise, they would have taken him out given the opportunity, not to be confused with the armed Florida sheriff’s deputy at the school who cowered.
I’ve known about 4 Soldiers and one Marine who went through the “Pathway Home,” which is a month-long program hosted at the Veteran’s Home. It’s a wonderful program and helped out my close childhood friend and got him on his feet. It’s a beautiful property – I ride my bike with my son there all the time and use the nearby driving range to take a load off.
I work in the hospitality industry in Downtown Napa, less than 9 miles from the Home. Needless to say, my fellow associates haven’t shut their traps ALLLLLLLLLLLLL DAY since 1030am about the NRA, Scary Black Rifles, and of course – the “crazy vet” meme. It took so much inside of me to cool my jets and not rip their heads off. “PTSD,” “and guns,” and you name it, they couldn’t shut their mouths. I even asked my boss to go home an hour early I was furious.
Been on the police scanner and local online paper all day. The guy is my age – I’m hoping it’s not someone I know personally. Someone that could have had a conversation with me (or another combat vet) that could have sparked a “no-go,” don’t do it, type of moment.
Please pray for Napa and the families/friends involved. We’re a tight-knit community.
Scouts Out!
It is what it is, M19D. Some people are quote comfortable presuming to understand things they do not. Your best bet is to work within yourself to dismiss their smug foolishness and vent here or wherever you are at ease, which is most likely around other Vets.
Stereotyping is what simple minded people do. It’s heavily discouraged to do so by race, creed or color but encouraged by the media when it comes to gun owners and veterans.
No IDs yet on either the gunman or the three hostages, but the stereotyping will not be slow in coming on this.
He killed the hostages and himself. Should look into this guys background and service history as many are saying he received a dishonorable recently, tried to get VA benefit, was turned down and in response this happened (VA center is at Yountville and the office personnel he killed).
If he is the recipient of a DD then he was forbidden from owning or possessing a firearm.

The episode is ended and it didn’t end well. Three female employees at the center were murdered in what were revenge killings for real or imagined wrongs committed by them, specifically, or the center, generally. And that’s that, except for the lifelong suffering of the victims’ families. We have no idea what the killer’s demons were or how long they haunted him. We do know that his murderous acts accomplished nothing, save for his momentary twisted satisfaction of destroying those he blamed. And then he killed himself.
When evil meets free will.
Sad.
Prayers for the victims and their families.
Yes, the media is this stupid:
“Wong had been an Army infantryman who served a year in Afghanistan from 2011 to 2012. He held a number of service awards, including one for expert marksmanship with a rifle.”
The link, naming him:
http://www.foxnews.com/us/2018/03/10/gunman-victims-idd-in-california-veterans-home-standoff.html
Don’t ask how stupid. They take it as a challenge.
And before the trolls ask why I only say prayers for those involved at this point, best to consider we know zero details at this point, and speculation invariably does more harm than good.
OH, good. Now the rest of the veterans’ community will start getting the Evil Eye from the leftred media.
Lessons to the rest of us:
It sucks to be a hostage.
It is often -fatal- to be a hostage.
So resist becoming one. Escape if you can’t avoid. Never stop trying to turn the tables, and understand that you likely became “deceased” as soon as you are grabbed, so you have -everything- to gain and -nothing- to lose by escaping from and or killing the hostage-takers. The longer you are captive, the harder it gets to escape, so go big early. Never quit. Grant neither mercy nor pity, for your killers will certainly not do so. Never lose hope. Never give up. Be shrewd and ruthless.
Plenty of folks on this forum can give the “pro tips”. But always FIGHT.
They mention rifle, but no mention yet if it was the scary black variety.
If it was of the scary black variety, I imagine the media would be shouting it from the rooftops.
My sincere condolences to the families of the victims as well as the shooter.
One or more of the reports I saw yesterday identified his firearm as an “M-4”, with no further elaboration. Likely the media throwing feces at the wall to see what stuck.
Not much on the news today, at all, about the whole thing. Then again, our local news is fixated on water that has PFAS in it, and wherever any trace of it might be found across the country.
Unless, of course, David Hogg and his sister weigh in on this. Then it’ll be front and center on the media.
UpNorth, there was no mass slaughter, just the deaths of those three women plus the gunman. Obviously, they were targeted for some reason, probably because he’d had some altercations with them – something like that. We’ll never really know.
But the media wants nothing so lowkey. They want, as I said yesterday, to see the waters red with blood, and carrion crows floating above the scene. The more I see of the kind of trash that went on regarding the Parkland school shooting, the more I think that most media people now are mentally ill.
I agree, they are mentally ill. And that the media probably was disappointed that this was, comparatively speaking, low key.
The shooter supposedly had been kicked out of the program he was in by the head of the program, Christine Loeber, over a threat he made. She was one of the victims.
