Monday morning feel good stories

| January 29, 2018

From Jackson, Tennessee;

It happened around 10 Friday morning on New Deal Road. Investigators say the homeowner grabbed a weapon and fired at the suspect. The suspect then ran away. Deputies were then notified of a man with a gunshot wound at a local hospital later that day, who has been identified as Marquese Wood. Authorities say Wood admitted he had been at the residence.

The suspect was treated for minor injuries and then taken into custody.

From Lexington, Tennessee;

Lexington police Lt. Jackie Newman…said officers were called to the home invasion on the 200 block of Old Todds Road at about 2 p.m.

The two males who kicked in the door ran after being fired on, and it was unclear whether either of them was hit, Newman said. She said late Saturday afternoon that no one had shown up at a local hospital with a gunshot wound.

From Hampton, Virginia;

A preliminary investigation revealed three armed, masked suspects approached a group of people at the Red Roof Inn. As they approached the group, the suspects began firing.

One of the suspects, 19-year-old Robert Woodford Jr., was shot by his accomplice and died on the scene. Two other men were also shot and taken to local hospitals.

Police have arrested a 17-year-old male in connection to the homicide. He has been charged with one count of murder, one count of use of a firearm in commission of a felony and two counts of maiming.

From Houston, Texas;

Houston police rushed to the 10500 block of Hammerly around 10 p.m. and found two wounded men in the parking lot outside the Spring Woods Village apartments.

One was shot in the back and the other in the side and hand, police said.

Both men were taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Police later said it appeared the two men started shooting at each other after one tried robbing the other at gunpoint.

Also, from Houston, Texas;

According to police, a man was walking to his car when he spotted a stranger pointing a sawed-off shotgun at him.

The car owner told police that he pulled out his pistol and opened fire on the stranger.

Police say robbery was a possible motive.

The shotgun holder was transported to the hospital in stable condition.

According to police, the driver holds a government issued permit to carry a firearm and will not be charged.

From Lakeland, Florida;

Gabriel Jacobs, 19, was shot by Michael Ives, 66, after Jacobs broke into Ives’ home, according to police.

Michael and his wife Charlotte were awoken shortly before 3 a.m. after hearing their doorbell ring. According to the report, Charlotte went to notify police as Michael attempted to communicate with Jacobs through the front door.

Police said Jacobs continued to repeatedly ring the doorbell, yell profanities, and kick the front door. Michael continued to warn Jacobs that he was armed with a shotgun and to stop, police said, but Jacobs ignored the warnings and kicked open the front door.

Michael again warned Jacobs not to come any closer or he would shoot, police said, however, Jacobs continued to walk through the doorway toward Michael, and was shot in the chest.

Jacob was transported to Lakeland Regional Health and remains in critical condition.

Had to look it up. Rather common name.
Noble title and all that.

Like Jackie Gleason says “And Away We Go!!”, here are today’s results from the Mach Two spinning of the TAH Name Scrabble (Home Version)®™ Whiz Wheel:

Marquese Woods (WOT) – 28×2= 56

Gabriel Jacobs (WRT) – 27×2= 54

And today’s winner of the Darwin Certificate of Achievement:

Robert Woodford Junior (BLDAM* resulting in DRT) 37×5= 185. Ding, Ding, Ding!!!

Robert Woodford Junior’s Darwin Certificate of Achievement will look so nice with his post office pic in the obituary section.

RANGE TIME !!!!
Lot’s of wounded but no DOT or DRT multipliers…
Yep, head to the range boys and girls and shoot center mass.

Hampton, Va. had a DRT. Shot by his own accomplice.

Dunno what Michael Ives had in his shotgun, nor the gauge, but he needs to switch to 00 buck or slugs, IMHO.

David

with all due respect, I’d suggest reducing the shotgun to firing a single ‘bullet’ kinda castrates its best feature, the ability to fire multiple projectiles at once. Actually you get more energy per load and a higher pellet count with #1 buck, but the selection of loads is much smaller.

Graybeard

I understand that sentiment, David, but here is my reasoning:

From the report, Gabriel Jacobs was walking through the door towards Michael Ives. Not knowing for sure the dimensions of the room and the location of Mr. Ives therein, but I’m going with 10′ to 15′ between the shotgunner and the intruder.
If one cannot hit center mass with a shotgun at those distances, especially given ample time to take a stance and shoulder the weapon, then some serious remedial shotgun instruction is in order.

The charts I can find quickly on foot-pounds of energy from various shotgun slugs
( http://gunnersden.com/index.htm.shotgun-slug-ballistics.html )
all show muzzle energy being 1,300 to 2,000 foot-pounds of energy.
I’m not finding any quick references in 12 ga 00 buck, but one 20 ga 00 buck lists around 1,700 footpounds.

At 10′-15′ the 00 buck, depending on barrel length, the buckshot is not going to be spread out to any significant degree. (Per “The Box of Truth”, 2.5″ to 3.5″ at 12′) (https://www.theboxotruth.com/the-box-o-truth-3-the-shotgun-meets-the-box-o-truth/ )

Either one will do the bad guy significant harm. At that range, there is no advantage, in terms of point of impact, between slug and 00 buck.

The slug will penetrate further, most likely, and the buckshot has the chance of finding multiple pathways through the body and doing more overall harm.

For my personal druthers, I favor 00 buck over slugs, but either one at 10′ to 15′ has the same need to do more than spray-and-pray, and the same consequence that the bad guy quits being a threat.

If, as I suspect, Mr. Ives was using birdshot, all the bad guy gets is a gouge out chunk of flesh.

When I was working for Brink’s, there was an AD with a shotgun that put a hole in the truck’s cab ceiling filling it with the OO buck shot so when the truck made a turn you could hear the pellets rolling around. In due time, the shot got into the nook & crannies and you didn’t hear the shot anymore. Had another one when we moved to the Brooklyn Navy Yard and a new employee had an AD which hit a piece of duct work at the roof level. Another one back in the early 70’S when an employee had an AD in A&S Dept. Store in Brooklyn NY and put a slug hole in the ground floor ceiling in front of the elevator. Reason for the shot gun in the store was that the Company had a tip of the crew being held up, so hence the shot gun and a back up crew.

Graybeard

Hate it when that happens. The ladies in the store really don’t feel good about having you around when you put a slug hole in the ceiling. Makes it hard to get a date.

Ex-PH2

One of the suspects, 19-year-old Robert Woodford Jr., was shot by his accomplice….

I know this is rather tragic, but…

Fell off my chair, laughing. Startled cats.

Graybeard

It is tragic if you fell off your chair and startled the cats. You or they could have been hurt!

UpNorth

One should always make sure your seating is secure when reading the daily Feel Good© stories, falling from one’s chair and startling various pets can be counted on two or 3 days of the week.
