Saturday morning feel good stories
From Hammond, Indiana;
A man died Friday morning after he was shot while apparently attempting to rob several people in a home in the 6400 block of Woodward Avenue, police said.
The man, who has not yet been identified, reportedly entered the home’s front door just before 7:30 a.m. and told several people he knew of a safe inside and intended to rob them, police Lt. Steve Kellogg said.
Witnesses told police they believed the man had a gun, Kellogg said.
The man led three people to a room in the basement. As he led the three out, a fourth person — who had been in another room — confronted the man and shot him multiple times, police said.
The people in the home called police and are cooperating, Kellogg said.
From Bridgeport, Connecticut;
Police say two suspects entered a home at 903 Kossuth St. around 5 p.m. with the intention of robbing someone.
The homeowner shot one of the suspects, who was wearing a mask, according to authorities. They say the two suspects then fled in a pickup truck that police pulled over at Barnum and Central avenues.
One suspect was arrested and the other was taken to Bridgeport Hospital for injuries from the shooting.
From Marion, Virginia;
Police say they received a report of a possible breaking and entering at a residence.
When crews arrived at the scene, they said that the resident of the home was still at the scene.
Officials say that early investigations show that shots had been fired and one person was reported injured.
The suspect was later found by police suffering from two gunshot wounds. The individual was then taken into custody and transported to Smyth County Community Hospital.
Police say he is reported to be in serious, but stable condition.
From Pensacola, Florida;
The man broke through the front door of the Pensacola Village Apartments building around 5:30 a.m., according to Pensacola Police Department spokesman Mike Wood. The occupant inside was the suspect’s ex-girlfriend, who Wood said was in fear for her life and shot the intruder in the leg.

Shit like this makes me wish I had the money to afford a rifle. I’m 20 so I only have a year before I can purchase pistols in Florida, but once I’m old enough and can afford it, I’m definitely buying a Glock and carry that around.
I would not plan on carrying it around; too heavy and too many folks willing to snatch it and shoot you with it. Too much paperwork and jail time for having a firearm outside the home. Willingness to carry implies willingness to use. half the felons you will ever meet made that first mistake.
A marlin .22 makes a good home gun (short and light) and works wonders on pigeon and crows. An over/under .22/.410 can make a decent deer or snake gun, still light and fun to use.
Good to know, thanks. I was also thinking about getting a Ruger 10/22 to plink with it, with how cheap .22 is. That, and I’ve always wanted my own AR-15, I’ve been interested in getting one from Fulton Armory because they have a specific version that replicates the original M16-M16A1 from the Vietnam days. I just want a simple rifle without all of that mall ninja shit.
As for being willing to use, if it means I live and whoever is attempting to kill me gets their ass capped, I’m all for it. I have no problem getting a CCW permit because unlike some other people, I actually want to defend myself and others when the time comes.
Great, I accidentally put a period in my name. Just amazing. Now I have to wait for it to get through moderation.
“replicates the original M16-M16A1 from the Vietnam days”
Armalite M15 carbine.
A bit shorter and just the handle.
None of that “picadilly” stuff.
With respect to alternative opinions aired here, I would not purchase a rimfire rifle with the goal of personal defence. It’s better than nothing, but for a young fellow on a budget, you can get more bang for your buck. The AR design is a respectable one, but for your first long gun I have two other suggestions. The first is a basic shotgun. The gauge matters less than you think, because the pellets don’t know what size of gun shot them. The only real difference is how many pellets. That said, 12 gauge is ubiquitous and if you can handle the punch (not as bad as you’d think, especially with modern stocks) it’s a good way of communicating your displeasure. Plan B would be an affordable carbine in a pistol calibre. My first pick would be a lever action in something like .357 Magnum. Before you laugh, a well loaded .357 out of a carbine has, within the first 100 yards, more energy and more momentum than a .223. The ammunition is also compatible with a revolver you can purchase later. Alternatively, for people on a tight budget, allow me to recommend the Hi-Point carbines in .45 or 9mm. I have the .45 to go with one of their .45 pistols. I know, it’s cheap, it’s ugly and it makes people laugh. I’ve won competitions with the pistol, and the carbine works just fine. They share magazines and eat any shop bought ammo I’ve put through them without complaint. For personal carry without telegraphing to the world, consider a shoulder holster. Especially leather ones are nice and comfortable, and with even a flannel shirt over it, it basically vanishes from sight. But most important of all: training. Rather than getting a fancy Kimber, buy a Hi-Point .45, and spend the rest of the money on ammunition. Don’t just punch paper, but find a competition near you, like IDPA or NRA-standard bowling pins. Go weekly. Practice, practice, practice. Don’t just practice gun clearing drills; shoot so much that clearing a malfunction becomes second nature. When you can do that, you… Read more »
Thanks, with a budget like mine (no fucking money), I don’t have the capital to keep buying guns, so I just planned on learning to shoot with what I have.
I definitely wouldn’t mind owning a nice 12ga shotgun, like a Mossberg 590 or a Remington 870. A shotgun that I’ve REALLY wanted is the Franchi SPAS-12, but it’s more for the looks and how it’s in a lot of my favorite video games. I’d still definitely shoot it, I’d rather not have it collect dust in a gun safe. Plus, it’s easier to hit an intruder with it because of the multiple pellets. That can be a problem too because a pellet may miss and go through walls. Just another reason to hit what you’re aiming at.
Oh yeah, the .357 is a pretty stout cartridge, I wouldn’t mind getting a gun chambered for that, as long as they don’t break the bank. I’m not too sure about owning a revolver, though. For one, most only hold six shots, so I’d rather not use a revolver for concealed carry. For me, 9mm is what I’m looking for. While 9mm isn’t as powerful as say .45, it’s much cheaper and most pistols can hold more than .45. I’d rather have more rounds of a less powerful ammunition than fewer rounds of a more powerful ammo; if I miss during a firefight, then that means I have to reload sooner if I had fewer rounds left.
As for training, that is imperative for me. Buying a fuck ton of guns and not knowing how to shoot any of them is a brain-dead thing to do. I’d rather have only a few guns, but know how to shoot all of them.
Also, this was the rifle I wanted. (pls dont ban me)

A lot of people bitch and put down the Hi Point firearms as being junk, but from what I hear their rifles are actually not badly made and they also have the lifetime warranty on them that covers anything.
You can get a used shotgun from a lot of places for a couple hundred bucks and a pump shotgun is probably the best choice for a shotgun to begin with.
12 or 20 gauge is a great caliber and there are so many out there they won’t break the bank buying one.
If you’re in Texas the pawn shops here are overflowing with cheap firearms.
You can also take them across state lines without too much of a hassle.
Go to the NRA website, they have a ton of information, all of it free, about firearms, what to look for what not to look for and why your personal choice should be the best fit for you and not the gun salesman.
You can join the NRA, it pays dividends in a ton of different ways.
There are blogs, information pages, political commentaries, self defense training videos, basically anything you could possibly imagine for self defense for you, your kids and your wife or husband if you have one.
Take care and enjoy yourself.
Self defense isn’t so much of a firearm or other equipment but a mindset, and practice, practice, practice makes perfect.

Quick follow-up:
The spread in pellets between similarly configured 12 and 20 gauge is basically the same, the only question is how dense the pattern is. To Daedalus I would say: at home and personal ranges, the size of a pattern is the size of the palm of your hand. The fact that it’s a shotgun doesn’t make hitting anything easier. If that’s your reason for a shotgun, get a rifle instead.
Thunderstixx: I can back up what you say about Hi-Point. My .45 developed a minor and occasional reliability problem. I called them, explained it, shipped the gun to them and got it back, repaired and cleaned, with a letter of apology for the inconvenience. Can’t ask for more than that. They stand behind their warranty, and behind their guns.
Back to Daedalus: If you know you’ll want a 9mm (adequate choice for your use case) on a budget (because you are broke) then get the Hi-Point 9mm carbine, and enjoy the fact that 9mm ammunition is extremely cheap. When you’re in shape to purchase the pistol, get the matching pistol and share the magazines between them. Spend the money you saved on a bucket of cheap 9mm rounds, and go shooting.
Oh, and for the love of all good things, get ear protection. Too many of my friends have lost hearing to gunfire. Don’t fool around. I double-bag my ears; earplugs and shooting muffs over them. You want to be able to hear intruders, not just ringing in your ears.
Even a .410 has more muzzle energy than a .44 Mag; do not turn up your nose at a ‘smaller’ shotgun like a 20. I second the recommendation on used guns; after the first round you fire it’s used anyway. I missed a nice solid .38 Model 10 yesterday for $200 by about 3 minutes, had some holster wear and little endshake but the price was right. And I’d bet cash money it shoots better than I do. Used 9mms are super common; get someone who knows guns to go with you to shop.
“The occupant inside was the suspect’s ex-girlfriend”
Never go back to an “ex” anything.
Focus on the letter “X”.

I’m sorry I bothered to read the comments on that article- The Stupid is strong there.
it is the land of fruit and nuts, but it was definitely a good shoot anyway you look at it. I lived in Hunting beach for a bit and for such a beautiful physical place, it has to be one of the Ugliest cross sections of America.
Hope the Cop gets a fair shake…
