Washington Post: After Charlottesville, the U.S. military grapples with its history of racism and extremism
Dan Lamothe who currently works at the Washington Post wrote an article today entitled “After Charlottesville, the U.S. military grapples with its history of racism and extremism” which really doesn’t say much of anything about the military grappling with racism or extremism.
Speaking from my two decades of service in the military, I’d have to say that the military community is the least most color-blind segment of American society. But Lamothe drags out four examples to make his case – Tim McVeigh, the Oklahoma City bomber, James A. Fields Jr., the fellow who mowed down several demonstrators last weekend in Charlottesville, Dillon Ulysses Hopper, a leader of some white supremacist group and Nathan Damigo, another founder of some racist group.
Four people out of how many millions of veterans, active duty and reservist servicemembers? Lamothe admits that the number is small;
To be sure, the percentage of veterans who subscribe to extremist views is tiny.
So tiny that it’s hardly worth mentioning, but here it is.
It’s an ugly return to the past for the Pentagon, which took steps to stamp out extremism in the 1990s, especially after the Oklahoma City bombing and the 1995 murder of a black couple near Fort Bragg, N.C. In that case, two soldiers — Malcolm Wright Jr. and James N. Burmeister — were found with a Nazi flag and white supremacist pamphlets. They were eventually convicted.
The Left loves Tim McVeigh and the Oklahoma City bombing – it gave them an example of “right wing extremism” that they can point to and say “See? Veterans are dangerous right wing terrorists.” Except that there are millions of veterans who go to work everyday, raise their families, pay their bills and not one of them knows how to wire up a bomb in a rental truck.
I’m disappointed that Dan Lamothe would stoop so low as to refer to McVeigh in the first paragraph of this piece.
And using James Fields as an example of “extremist veterans” is equally vacuous – Fields’ military career can be measured in weeks before he was booted, for whatever reason. It would be more reasonable to blame his high school education for his actions that day in Charlottesville.
Meanwhile, the services are still grappling with what to do with the incorporation of Confederate history into military culture. Ten Army bases are named after generals who fought for the South during the Civil War, including Fort Bragg, Fort Hood, Fort Polk and Fort Benning.
Yeah, it’s not even a topic of discussion in military circles, let alone something that they’re “grappling with”. By the way, I was stationed at all four of those bases during my career, so I guess I’m a suspected extremist, now. If having military bases with those names should be re-titled, there must be a reason to bother with the expense and the confusion that it would cause.
Thanks to Chief Tango for the link.

I’m white and I’ve knocked out more damn push-ups and flutter kicks under black NCOs than I could ever count.
Definitely racism and extremism. So obvious.
Having been in the Navy during the 60’s I might have done at least on pushup, I’m not sure. But I can damn sure say I polished a lot of urinals and swabbed one hell of a lot of decks under supervision of an African American petty officer.
But that’s impossible, the reason only white people are racist is because blacks and other minorities have NEVER been in a position of power over white people!
More than half my immediate leadership and commanders were non-white in my career.
The left likes to use that as an example of racism. That minorities make up a proportionally larger percentage of enlistments, it’s an example of how the racist government unfairly entices poor minorities into service.
You can’t win with these types.
Same here… and have had a few women as CO/XO/CMC in my career.
In my case, one woman was tied with one guy, both white, for worst ever. And of course, both were promoted anyway. Even with all the shitty things they did, illegal, regulation violating, army value defying shitty things.
In Desert Storm, my platoon leader was Black and the four squad leaders under us were all Black. Somehow we all came home alive.
It must’ve been because Aliens saved you all for a future purpose only they see.
Shit, I served under all colors of the rainbow in all positions from GO on down, officer and enlisted. The press is really pissing me off with their willful ignorance of all things military.
I was in the Marines from 81 to 85 and aside from black Marines and white Marines keeping a bit separate in the barracks and hanging out with their own race during liberty, I did not experience any racism personally. For the most part we all got along just fine. I had several black senior NCOs and Staff NCOs and all were great to serve under. I heard more squawk about Woman Marines than dark green Marines. But today in the civilian world……..this is horrible. But,not for the blacks as I see it. Diversity and Inclusion is a form of racism in my opinion. If you are male and white in the business world today, you don’t stand a chance.
If we are to change the name of everything, how about changing the Washington Post to the “Washington Pravda”?
You have to follow the “correct” process and eliminate Washington. Pravda and Izvestia are insufficient.
Least? Are you sure you didn’t mean “most color blind segment?”
Thanks, I started to say “least racist” but changed my verbiage mid-typing.
Don’t get too excited. I’ve spent enough time around SJWs to know that being colorblind is also a bad thing, which white people claim to ignore oppression and maintain the status quo.
I always thought we were following the words of MLK by being colorblind. But nope, we’re just continuing to be racist.
SJWs are the most entirely useless human beings you could ever meet, I swear.
It seems so paradoxical that I can’t believe SJWs have brain power to think about anything else:
“you have to acknowledge him for being black but you can’t acknowledge that he’s black because that’s profiling him because he’s black, but you can’t identify him as black, though you need to so you can acknowledge that he’s black, but you can’t see that he’s black although you should see that he’s black because its so tough to be black…..”
Gotta love those mobile goalposts, right? One day, something is racist, so you change it. Then, the opposite is racist and they want you to change it back, which you can’t do because it was racist…
The very interesting (and frightening) thing is how effective these SJWs have been in their destruction of civil society. Proof that logic and reason are not necessary for gaining power.
No worries. You are correct, Jonn, and i appreciate this post. The military, to me, was the best example of a raceless meritocracy I’ve ever experienced. Were there some exceptions? Of course. However, I still put the military as an institution up against almost anything in the US.
I wonder if Lamothe, Horton and Szoldra believe the tripe they spew forth, or hold their noses while writing garbage for a paycheck. I get it, the rent needs to be paid, but sheesh.
They are probably “true believers”, they actually believe the tripe they churn out.
Paul Szoldra writes The Duffle Blog. I think you mean Gibson-Neff.
Yeah, him too. But Szoldra…

At this point, if Trump were to discover the cure for cancer, many people would be celebrating, but liberals (especially hollywood and political types) would be tweeting about how evil he is because he just put thousands of medical and scientific types out of work for discovering a cure for the disease they work so hard because of.
Someone on here wrote the perfect statement the other day that fits hand & glove with this article: even the military has its share of liberals; from E-1s to O-10s.
In case this maroon (as Bugs would say) is also friggin blind, the military is still, to a greater degree, a meritocracy type system. My life long, best friend is black. He’s way more liberal than any friend I’ve ever had. He gives the military (Navy) full credit for his success. I say it’s a two-way street – he outshined a lot of other folks and got the reward for it.
He retired as a CWO4. His background landed him a job with a defense contractor shortly after retirement. He’s been with them for over 20 years now.
It’s that meritocracy thingy to which so many lefties object. If folks earn what they have then they don’t need the lefties to keep them dependent upon handouts.
The left wants to keep everyone down… except for the”chosen few” that are “enlightened”.
Just like crabs in a bucket, if one crab tries to get out, the rest of the crabs pull him back into the bucket!
Let’s turn this around…..”The Washington Post grapples with its history of racism and extremism”.
I’m sure that, equal time period for equal time period, more examples of racism and extremism could be found in the WaPo bird cage liner then the US military. Wanna go there, WaPo?
I’d be curious to see what the demographic make up of their staff/employees is. Same for NY Times, and so on.
The Army Times did a $hity article about the white supremacist at Fort Bragg in the 94/95ish my unite was just getting out of the box in JRTC and everybody was cringing at the article glade to be away from Fort Bragg and the $hit storm. Then a bad thing happened. Two of our troops recognized the secret off base location of the interview and photo shoot as one our NCO’s new apartment they helped him move into the week before we left for JRTC. Needless to say the food chain had a conniption. In under 30days she destroyed his career his life savings sold almost everything he owned and had her new boyfriends take out around $20.000 in new credit cards in his name. The collection of polaroid’s photos showed most of it going to nose candy.
Interesting.
No mention in the article of Micah Xavier Johnson, the Army Reservist who shot 12 people in the Black Lives Matter Protest in Dallas Texas last year and killed 5 Law Enforcement Officers, two who were Marine Corps and Navy Veterans:
http://www.military.com/daily-news/2016/07/08/dallas-police-shooter-identified-as-former-us-soldier-reports.html
I was thinking that – why didn’t they point out other individuals “of color” that have committed crimes of hate. In fact, I can think of one they failed to mention….
Nidal Hasan
hey the guy who shot and killed 2 Kissimmee Florida officers was a black 20 year retired USMC MSG.
Oh and 1 officer was black and no BLM>
How about the 4 blacks that kidnapped the young man and his girlfriend and the despicable things they did to him in front of her, the the horrendous things they did to her…I could have come up with some ‘WONDERFUL” tortures for those vermin, color be damned!!!
Wasn’t the asshat DC “Sniper” an Army veteran? Strange how that was left out of the article.
The Kuwait grenade chucker in 2003 could also be called an extremist and a racist. Again, strange how he was left out of the article.
And let’s not forget the pieces of shit Nidal Hasan and Hasan Akbar.
Those don’t count. They don’t support the approved narrative.
But they were Muslim and therefore oppressed by the white man, victims of evil whitey. It wasn’t their fault, it was “workplace violence” after all.
HERE you go using FACTS which ARE NOT in line with the Washedallup [Com]Post’s White Guilt Propaganda Agenda!
Oh yes, McVeigh & OKC bombing truck. Was working at Ryder when that fiasco went down. We, the employees of Ryder didn’t have one thing to do with that except for the company name on the truck he possessed, were “bombarded” with threats on our lives and facilities for weeks on end. Same damn thing went on after the WTC parking lot bombing, too. Yep, a lot of veterans employed by Ryder were walking on pins and needles. So fuck those four assholes and the dipshit that wrote his story for WaPo.
Oh, do let’s hit all the emotional strings and twanger gears possible! He sounds like a whining so-and-so to me. Three is no point to his article. It’s a shopping list, in my view. Pick your favorite whine – that sort of thing.
Remind that clowndog that the military is all-volunteer, so no one is forced into military servitude to suffer the slings and arrows of snootiness. Such a jerk. And no, ships should not have their names changed unless they’re named after whining twits like harvey milktoast.
Scuse me, but my cat is pestering me.
Hey Ex. Your cat sure is active. We have 4 here and they are pretty much sofa slugs.
Well, she saw a goldfinch in the sunflowers this morning, and the day just went straight to hissy fits after that.
If I remember correctly when I went in the Army, income tax day 1968, we had black, white and Hispanic drill sgts. They seemed to hate us all whatever color.
RTC San Diego had a few Filipino CPO’s as RCC’s… they hated everyone.
RTC San Diego had a few Filipino CPO’s as RCC’s… they hated everyone … EQUALLY.
There, I fixed that for you. (^_^)
Thanks… not enough coffee this morning.
Yeah, I had black, white and Hispanic DS’s that we all thought were at least 75% Satan DNA!!
Yep!
It is proof that the military is doing a terrific job of weeding out the nut cases when we see so few with military training become involved in extremist activities. This clown demonstrates that reality quite nicely while forgetting about guys like Hassan. Silly boy.
The veteran Timothy McVeigh? The Post is talking here about the Lee Harvey Oswald of the Oklahoma City bombing, with everything that that implies. McVeigh was as likely a militia extremist as Oswald was a Communist. Can anyone say “false flag?” See my “Upton Sinclair and Timothy McVeigh.” http://dcdave.com/article4/010602.htm As for James Fields, see http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2017/08/something_stinks_about_charlottesville.html#.WZZBPM7NGwM.twitter
Ithink you guys have it wrong I pretty sure this guy never served in our Military, he used to work for that commie rag the Marine Corps Times and was sent to Afghanistan , but he never served..
https://www.linkedin.com/in/dan-lamothe-0a81b7b
You’re probably right. We were having a discussion on FB one time and I asked him where he was during Leon Panetta’s time at the Pentagon and he answered “Afghanistan” and I took that to mean he was stationed in Afghanistan as a member of the military, so I probably got that wrong. My fault.
After the initial head shaving everyone looks the same and is treated with the same distain.
NSFW
Thanks for posting that movie.
I thought I’d seen it before, but as I watched it, I couldn’t remember having seen any of it previously.
Naturally, my experience was different, as I was drafted (after volunteering for it) into the United States Army on Thursday 07 December 1967, and took my Basic Combat Training at Fort Lewis, Washington in the Second Squad of the Third Platoon, Company “D”, 3d Battalion, 1st Basic Combat Training Brigade.
We trained with M-14 rifles, not M-16s, and I also used the M-14 rifle during my Advanced Individual Training at the Southeastern Signal School at Fort Gordon, Georgia, and when I was in Germany at Kleber Kaserne in Kaiserslautern with Company “A”, 11th Air Defense Signal Battalion, 32d Army Air Defense Command.
I didn’t get an M-16 rifle until two years later when I arrived at my new assignment in the Phu Lam Signal Battalion in Saigon, Republic of Viet Nam in December of 1969.
They issued me an M-14 rifle, and immediately had me hand it back in, after which they issued me my M-16 rifle.
It was something to do with Army paperwork which I don’t understand.
Loved that movie!
It motivated me and a couple of my High School friends to join the Marines, plus i had to keep up with my family tradition of service.
I couldn’t wait to join, so i attended the summer devil pup program out of Camp Pendleton to experience a mini boot camp.
I soon realized this is not for me and had MAJOR second thoughts but ended up joining anyways…lol
This pretty much sums up my opinion.
Warning: Strong language for some, it a damn shame I have to warn people that telling the truth might be offensive to some, suck it up princess.
https://youtu.be/78ICiQKdO-Q?t=13s
You pussy. You couldn’t make it through three weeks of this.
A female friend of mine who spent several years in the Marines once told me how she was called a “fucking gonorrhea-infested cum-dumpster” on her first day in boot camp.
Dayummmm … I couldn’t understand a single word she was saying.
That’s WM foreplay. 🙂
I keep watching and their uniforms just keep falling off.
That gas mask scene – were some of them coughing because they didn’t the fit mask correctly? Or was it too big? It’s supposed to seal tight to your face, isn’t it?
@ EX-PH2:
If Marines do things the same way the Army does, when in the gas chamber, you remove your gas mask and are not allowed to leave the gas chamber until you sound off with your name, rank, and serial number.
In my case, I had to stay there longer, because the Second Platoon leader was in charge, and I kept insisting that my platoon, the Third Platoon, was the best platoon.
He finally let me leave.
The Army requires three things that must be done every year in order to remain in the United States Army, i.e., pass the physical fitness test, qualify with your assigned weapon, and go through the gas chamber.
The Army also uses tear gas during war games.
I’m in LUST!!!
I’d never make it in the United States Marine Corps!
Why?
Marines apparently speak a language other than English, for I couldn’t understand anything that was being said by anybody.
Obviously, everything has changed since I was in the United States Army.
What kind of rifle are they using?
Can I buy one from my local sporting goods store?
What kind of gas mask is that?
It’s different from the M-17 Protective Mask that we used in the (old?) United States Army.
Even their web gear and packs are completely different.
I don’t think I’d make it in the Women Marines!
My daughter did the US Army version of BCT.
I am so proud of my Veteran baby girl !!!
Of course, she could have kicked my ass back then, with no problem !!!
Thanks to all the ladies that served out there.
To the point of renaming Army bases, will the debate also include renaming the 16 Leesburgs in the US; Jacksonville(s); cities named after Beauregard and Davis? After all, if this debate is appropriate for US military facilities, it should apply to civilian locations also. A simple Google search returns numerous lists of counties, roadways and cities named after prominent Confederate leaders.
As Jonn stated above, changing these names would be confusing and expensive. Who would select new names for all these places – and pay for it? (Just kidding – we know who would pay for this exercise in futility).
Need an example of how well this worked from the past?
Check how many places and roads have”Hilter” in the name in Europe seventy years after World War II.
Well, gee whiz, then Washington, DC will have to be renamed, too, won’t it? And you can’t even use District of Columbia, any more, can you? No, that will have to go, too.
After all, if you’re going to cleanse all those painful fake memories that only came up with a chance to be on TV or in the news media, why not just rename every Goddeamned offensive town and city in the freakin’ country?
Why, there’s absolutely no limit to the crazypants stuff,is there?
“why not just rename every Goddeamned offensive town and city in the freakin’ country?
Why, there’s absolutely no limit to the crazypants stuff,is there?”
Everyone can play!
Just come up with a reason to be offended.
All those foreign sounding names need to go. /s
Let us also remember that Arlington National Cemetery was once Mary Curtis Lee and Robert E. Lee’s home. Mary inherited the 1,100 acre estate from her father, George Washington Parke Curtis, the grandson of Martha Washington who was adopted by George Washington after his father died:

Mordor. Descriptive and accurate.
WTF are they going to rename the State of Washington?
Marx
I can see how naming a state after Groucho would be a good thing. But what about Harpo, Chico, Zeppo, and Gummo? Don’t they get states too?
That’s the silliest thing I evah hoid!
HOLY FUCKING SHIT!!! THOSE ASSHOLES HAD BETTER NOT RENAME THE STATE OF WASHINGTON!!!!! Id damn near advocate for seeing if British Columbia would annex us…but I think even the Canadians wouldn’t want the part of Washington WEST of the Cascades. Vancouver (BC) has all the things that Seattle has to offer in a more scenic location. Central and Eastern WA are agricultural powerhouses, the Columbia River provides a boatload of hydropower, and well people seem to be more like people over here. Ive lived on both sides of the Cascades, the urban effect on civility is something the Id not wish on my family or friends.
KEEP WA, WA! # WA Matters
more manufactured reality…golly gee whizz what a surprise
I always thought it was interesting that, from its inception, the Navy had no restriction on black men enlisting. Annapolis was a whites-only institution, but black men were free to join as enlisted Sailors. Once in, they were free to advance in any rating for which they displayed aptitude, free to promote, and could (and often enough did) “climb through the hawse hole” and get become commissioned officers. Throughout the 19th Century, many a white seaman served under a black officer or chief.
Then in 1913, the newly-elected president forced a draconian level of racial segregation upon the Navy. White men could no longer be placed under black superiors, and nearly all black officers and chiefs were forced out. Black enlisted seamen were limited to menial labor jobs, and were barred from most ratings. Black Gunner’s Mates, Bosun’s Mates, Machinist’s Mates, Signalmen, and Yeomen were suddenly relegated to peeling potatoes. Men whom the Navy had spent lots of time money training to operate million-dollar engines and weapon systems of the most powerful warships in the Fleet suddenly could only be stevedores or cooks. A new and toxically-racist mentality was created in the Fleet that would hold for the next forty years.
And who was this president, who dragged the Navy backwards a hundred years or more in the Civil Rights department? Why, that would be the hero of globalist democrats, Woodrow Wilson.
Maybe the (D) party should “grapple” with its own history of racism and extremism instead of just pretending it didn’t happen and blaming everyone else.
Huh, I was gonna blame Trump until you said Wilson. Now I don’t know what to think.
For those who might not be aware of it, Lamothe is a former Marine Corps Times writer who has a couple of journalism degrees but has apparently never served in the military, according to his own bio. His column “Checkpoint” in the WaPo is one of those standing “beat” features which can be a mix of either straight opinion or fact-based news.
What might have happened on this piece on military racism is that Lamothe set out to look at a problem with expectations that the problem was more serious than it turned out to be. Since that was the case, instead of dumping the results of a failed effort, he wrote a tepid column based on what he had.
As Gertrude Stein once said about Oakland, “There’s no there there.”
Sadly, it is getting out of control: http://dfw.cbslocal.com/2017/08/18/confederate-monuments-removed-vandalized/ “Confederate Monuments Removed Or Vandalized Across US” “Confederate monuments are being removed around the country under pressure from those who say they honor a regime that enslaved African-Americans. The pace has increased, however, in the wake of last weekend’s deadly confrontation at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. A look at monuments that have been removed, covered up or vandalized in recent days: ___ ANNAPOLIS, MARYLAND A statue of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Roger B. Taney, who wrote the 1857 Dred Scott decision that upheld slavery and denied citizenship to African-Americans, was removed from the grounds of the Maryland State House Friday and trucked away to storage. Three of four voting members of the State House Trust voted to move the bronze statue, which was erected in 1872. HELENA, MONTANA The city removed a granite fountain Friday that stood in a park as a monument to Confederate soldiers since 1916. One of a few people on hand to oppose the removal was detained when she defied orders to vacate the grounds of the fountain. She was later released. ___ BELLINGHAM, WASHINGTON The city near the Canadian border removed signs identifying Pickett Bridge, which was named for Confederate Capt. George E. Pickett. North of Vancouver, former highway markers honoring Confederate President Jefferson Davis were splashed with red or black paint at a park on private land Friday. ARLINGTON, TEXAS The Dallas-area theme park Six Flags Over Texas will no longer fly the Confederate flag. The park named for the six flags that have flown over the state said Friday that will now fly six American flags. ___ NEW YORK Transit officials will alter subway tiles at a Manhattan station that have a cross-like design similar to that of the Confederate flag. The design at the 40th Street entrance to the Times Square stop isn’t flag-related but transit officials said they want to avoid confusion about their meaning. Earlier this week, plaques honoring Gen. Robert E. Lee were removed from the property of a now-closed Brooklyn church. Meanwhile, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has called… Read more »
I’m sure they’ll be toppling headstones and vandalizing the Fayetteville confederate cemetery again soon.
Too bad they don’t show the same enthusiasm for things like…work.
Funny how these folks also vandalize Jewish graves…..makes no sense.
actually they vandalize the veterans graves there too…my kids and I spent a day replacing flags that were ripped away one veteran’s day. Union and Confederate flags.
Anticipate blow back from even moderate southern constituents as this escalates.
Several interviews from main stream Georgians expressed dismay at the attacks on the valor of Confederate soldiers, regardless of the cause of the fight.
Desecrate a hallowed site and watch the radicalization of the counter protest.
Some calmer heads should press hard to tamp down activism and bring some sense of dialogue.
The Primitive Baptist church my grandparents attended in northeast Georgia has a cemetery pre-dating the Civil War. As such, there are quite a few Civil War veterans laid to rest there. Every Veterans Day and Memorial Day, the membership puts flags – US and CSA – on their graves and US flags on those of veterans from otger conflicts. Every time they’ve done this in the past year, the CSA flags disappear. It’s infuriating and disrespectful. We just can’t seem to catch them in the act.
You have to be willing to stay there overnight, preferably with pepper spray in large cans and maybe shotguns loaded with buckshot, birdshot or rock salt – anything that will sting.
Hmmm… rocksalt claymores?
So here we go on the slippery slope, and somewhere below the SJW crew decides the Vietnam Wall memorial needs to come down as a symbol of imperialist aggression, and racist oppression of “the bothers” who had to fight for the white man. Never mind all those white boys who had to fight too, including them would only complicate the outrage paradigm. Consider the media potential:
Political pundits would be able to speculate on unconfirmed reports that a top White House adviser might have possibly once been photographed wearing a ball cap appearing to have an alleged MAC-V patch. Maybe.
Maxine Waters could demand the impeachment of President Trump for the time he bombed Haiphong Harbor in 1988, saying, “Those people in South America didn’t do nothing to us.”
Hillary Clinton might offer to burn her brassiere on the Capitol steps, but nobody would take her up on it.
UC Berkeley students in tie-dye could march and chant, “Mr. Trump, tear down that wall!”
In the words of that wise American Yogi Berra, “It’s deja vu all over again.”
Hell, they went as far to vandalize a monument to Joan of Arc in New Orleans:
https://pjmedia.com/trending/2017/08/17/new-orleans-joan-arc-statue-vandalized-take/
WTF role did she have in the Civil War? Hell, she had bigger balls than all Frenchmen did (or ever will have).
same reason they vandalized a peace memorial yesterday…theyz stoopid
White Christian woman. The only thing worse is an old white man.
“White Christian woman. The only thing worse is an old white man.”
reply
da fuq? what am i doing worse than a white Christian woman?
except the sex stuff… they may be worse at it than me:)
So what will they say about the black men who volunteered to fight for the Confederate states? I’m thinking heads might explode.
what about the almost 4,000 black slave owners?
Lowell, Michigan has a “showboat” which doesn’t really float, it’s a stage on the water, constructed to look like a paddle-wheeler. It was named the Robert E. Lee. The special snowflakes on the city council took it upon themselves to re-name it, starting yesterday.
Just as an FYI, nobody called it the Robert E. Lee, everyone called it the “Lowell Showboat”, but somebody might have been offended.
The largest Jewish military cemetery outside of Israel is the Jewish Confederate cemetery in Richmond, Virginia.
I’ve been told that some folks don’t like the Scottish flag, because it is a white Saint Andrews cross on a field of blue.
I fly it from the cab of my pickup truck whenever I go to a Scottish gathering or Celtic festival.
Just to be clear about the statue getting torn down in Durham they have arrested 5 people so far. All of them happen to be members of the Communist Party USA. That doesn’t sound co-ordinated now does it?
This topic reminded me of a KKK billboard I used to see in Fayetteville,NC when I was stationed at Fort Bragg in 1974-78.
You couldn’t miss it as it was on the main road coming out of the Fayetteville airport. It was old and faded in the seventies and I’ve got to believe it was eventually removed.
http://www.alamy.com/stock-photo-ku-klux-klan-sign-fayetteville-north-carolina-racism-racist-1960s-50559994.html
There used to be a giant billboard on the side of the Interstate highway which folks would see when crossing the state line from Virginia into North Carolina.
It was a HUGE depiction of a Ku Klux Klansman sitting astride a rearing stallion, and holding a large Confederate banner, with the words,
“WELCOME TO NORTH CAROLINA! THIS IS KU KLUX KLAN COUNTRY!”
“help fight communism”. Guess who Antifa is? Guess who it was that tore down the statue in Durham, NC? The extreme left Communists and the even more radical left KKK have been at each others throats since the 20’s. Both support Socialism but the Nazi’s want it State Controlled and the Communists want it World Wide. Other than that they are much the same
Bingo.
Anyone who thinks otherwise, I recommend a great book by Jonah Goldberg, entitled “Liberal Fascism.” It details the origins of fascism and how closely it in fact dovetails Soviet-style communism, and how many of the leaders in Italy, Germany, and Russia/Soviet Union followed many of the same teachings and ran in many of the same circles.
Of course, let’s not forget how our so-called “progressives” have kept minorities down, from the old Democrats, to Wilson, to FDR and LBJ, just to name a few.
The press has the worst history of racism.
I wonder what today’s mainstream liberal Yellow Journalists would say about it if these SJW snowflakes would go to smaller towns such as Columbus GA, Phenix City or Eufala AL and try their shit there?
When I was in the United States Army, there was a LOT of racial hostility, complete with rioting in the barracks, and any reports of violence, disobedience, and/or disrespect were concealed from the news media.
The entire command structure was under strict unwritten pressure to not reveal anything but racial harmony in the ranks, and even the NCOs were afraid of antagonizing the blacks, who segregated themselves.
We were all forced to attend Race Relations classes, and we were forced to sign on our Enlisted Efficiency Reports that we supported Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action policies.
Also, during my time in the United States Army, rampant, almost universal use of illegal recreational drugs was a MAJOR problem in every unit and every installation.
Without ever participating in that activity, but merely by being in that environment, I received a thorough education in the various narcotics and their application.
Can confirm some of JRM’s account above.
Ft Hood – summer 1975. All troops in my unit were recalled to barracks and issued batons in case we were called up as supplementary MPs. Restricted to BN AO for most of a week until worst of episodes subsided. Many troops were finishing up service following Vietnam and were all FTA along with other issues.
Racial unrest kept part of the post pretty hairy for several months. Can’t find a single reference to any of that today.
I just now thought of something.
Ultimately, it is the POLICE who are entirely at fault for what happened in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Yes, they were ordered to stand by and do nothing, BUT – – – ,
As sworn peace officers, when they witness a crime being committed or about to be committed, i.e., violence, rioting, assaults, and/or vandalism, then no matter what the mayor may have “ordered”, they have an obligation to ignore any such “orders”, and intervene to apprehend the offenders and protect the public.
Disagree with your statement that “the Police were entirely at fault…”
Surprised to read that statement from you since you served in the US Army (and you also stated you served as a law enforcer).
Are you saying it is ok to disobey orders given by a Chain of Command whether it is civilian or military?
I’m saying a police officer is ALWAYS obligated to enforce the law, preserve lives, and maintain order, regardless of what any mayor, governor, or even the president may have erroneously “ordered”.
I read the Mayor never issued those orders.
I also listened the Charlottesville Chief of Police statement on how they tried to handle the situation.
We are all entitled to our own opinions. I just disagree with you on your statement. Plus, you did not answer my question. But that is ok. Not interested in your response anymore. Have a great rest of your Sunday!
The worst racists I saw while in were black and they were a very, very small number of people. The overwhelming majority of black, hispanic and other soldiers Enlisted or Officers were professional and great people. Someone I know who is in now tells me it has become rampant with favoritism, sensitivity classes, outright negative actions against non-minority soldiers such as sucky duty, etc…Got much worse under Obama.
Lamothe and Horton now whining WAPO wasn’t included with Mattis trip. Oh boo hoo:

@DanLamothe
Mattis will make a trip starting tonight to Ukraine, Jordan and Turkey. Washington Post is among several news outlets not invited.

Against my better judgment, I read the story.
There’s several minutes of my life I’ll never get back.
I am just sick of the fucks on the left and all the crap they throw.
The worst part is that the lameass media treats them like they are above anyone else in America.
They are going to pick a fight they don’t want that will come with a result they can’t handle.
Not sure any more whether it is the lefties driving the media or the media driving the lefties. It may not make any difference, of course, except in the appropriate tactics to use to neutralize the threat they pose.
I didnt notice ANY overt racism during my CDN military career either.(except for the odd dumb joke) There is not a huge Afro-CDN population in the CF, but there is a very large Native Indian presence. Larger than the general population anyway. We even have a Pre-Basic training course designed to familiarise those from remote Native communities, to the bustling ‘Southern’ life. Most Inuit recruits have never seen a tree in person before! So yeah, major culture shock within the same Country, or even Province.
The closest thing we have to ethnic tension is the (mostly) friendly rivalry between Anglo and Franco troops.
The Franco’s would always kick our asses in the soccer match every sports day!
Somewhat OT… take a few minutes to check this out. If you don’t believe that some of these “groups” have an agenda against anyone that doesn’t follow their way of thinking, think again

just watch the censorship and group-lead reporting creeping in on Youtube. The defunding and censorship of web-based reporters that don’t suck the liberal agenda balls deep.
Theses aren’t supremacists or racists, they are simply people that disagree based on factual coverage.
“group-lead reporting”
What I mean by that, is groups of people that immediately report posted videos authored by certain people as inappropriate or offensive as soon as they come up. It has nothing to do with content, but instead is an effort to have differing opinions eliminated. Youtube is deleting people more and more using that tactic. I’ve seen videos deleted right after I read them or they just disappear before I have a chance to get to them.
Isn’t that why Don Shipley started his own channel?
yes…exactly
So far, these efforts to overthrow the whatever of the USA have gone wanting. The number of people appearing for these wanton activities is dropping. It’s probably best that since the monuments get vandalized, they are put into storage until these little crapweasels find something else to do.
After all, until Pres. Trump showed up in the White House, where was the noise, the angst, and the hooliganism? His presence is just an excuse to act like damned fools in public. Maybe it’s time the poh-poh turned the firehoses on them. The streets need cleaning, you know.
So as I read that the statue of Roger B. Taney has been removed from outside the Maryland statehouse is the next logical step in the left wing to remove the USCGC Roger B. Taney, the last remaining ship afloat present in Honolulu during the Pearl Harbor attack, from Baltimore harbor?

Columbus next …
OK, Columbus only got it half right, and did many evil things once he found his way to the west.
Lets rename the City?

We might see some of the more ill thought suggestion die down as people consider the amount of resources involved in changing things.
Charlottesville, Boston, phony outrage over a war fought 152 yrs ago ? Why is that ?? Easy explanation..” Hillary lost
Well, that, and nobody smacked these idiots on the behind when they threw tantrums as 4-year-olds or made them pick up after themselves.
