35 Russian diplomats ordered out of US

| December 30, 2016

Fox News reports that the Obama Administration has imposed sanctions on the Russian diplomatic mission in the United States and they’ve ordered 35 Russian diplomats out of the country in the next 72 hours.

The threat came after U.S. President Barack Obama on Thursday imposed sanctions on Russian officials and intelligence services over alleged Russian interference in the U.S. presidential election, as American political sites and email accounts were hacked. Thirty-five Russian diplomats were ordered to leave the U.S. in 72 hours and two facilities closed.

Russia has continued to deny accusations by the U.S. that it hacked and stole emails in order to help Trump win. Trump commented on the matter saying the U.S. should move on. Trump is planning on meeting with U.S. intelligence leaders next week to learn more.

Of course, Obama never would done such a thing before he became a lame duck president. He allowed Russia to run roughshod over Eastern Europe for years without a peep.

Good Morning America reports that Vladimir Putin will not respond in kind to US sanctions;

Russian President Vladimir Putin said today he will not expel American diplomats, despite the recommendation from his country’s foreign minister to do so.

Putin said he views the latest moves of the outgoing Obama’s administration as a provocation aimed at further undermining U.S.-Russia relations.

Democrat Party officials still aren’t denying the content of the leaked emails.

Bold move, Barry…bold move.

Next time you should send a strongly worded letter….because nothing says “Im kinda serious” like a UN grade bromance break up letter.

The JEF having another meltdown… it’s all about him and his legacy. That’s all he’s been worried about for the last eight years – his legacy.

Franklin Pierce and Millard Fillmore will soon move up the list of unpopular POTUS.

desert

Well…he keeps shytting on his legacy DAILY!

Hondo

And we see the current DC clown krewe soon to be former feckless Administration’s foreign policy strategy in action:

When in trouble or in doubt,
Stamp your feet, then whine and pout.

This reminds me of a spoiled brat throwing a temper tantrum because he lost some game, and I predict it will be just as effective. Plus, it also manages to make Putin appear the responsible adult here – more responsible and adult, frankly, than the POTUS.

But that last point is old news to anyone with 3 or more working brain cells who’s been watching world affairs for the last nearly 8 years. Love or hate him, one has to admit Putin has certainly consistently worked to protect his country’s national interests over the past few years. The same can’t be said for the current US gang of idiots Administration.

Reaperman

Yeah, the first thing I thought was how much this makes Putin the bigger man. Obama served that move up to him on a platter. What could the desired outcome for that move possibly have been?

PFM

I’m convinced he did it to screw with Trump – although now Donald has an opportunity to make nice with Putin. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Trump pull a ‘Nixon goes to China’ move and show up at the Kremlin for a visit. Just goes to show you how a former community activist and professor stacks up against a former KGB colonel in geopolitics – one had theory and the other practical experience.

Fjardeson

And don’t think for one minute that Putin doesn’t know this is just No-bama throwing a lame duck temper tantrum. How childish. Michelle should slap him upside the head.

It should be 35 DUMOCRAPS BEING shipped out of the country, including obozo and michael!!

The Other Whitey

Whether the Russians were behind it or not–and the evidence for “not” grows stronger by the day–Obama has done a great job of making sure this entire episode plays out in Putin’s favor. Sure, it’s likely the 35 diplomats in question probably include at least one or two spies, whom the FBI most likely knew about before they set foot on US soil and the administration didn’t do a damned thing about until now.

LC

I’ve been out of the loop on holiday travel for a few days, but what growing evidence is there that this wasn’t the Russians? Last I saw, there was considerable evidence that they were behind it.

As for the spies, I believe the compounds in Maryland and New York were under surveillance for quite some time. We knew. They probably knew we knew. But that’s how the game is played. I still need to read up on all of the latest, but I’d be very interested in hearing what other courses of actions President Obama should’ve taken instead. It’s easy to say, “That’s so stupid!”, but, as an open question, what was a better option?

ex-OS2

For the life of me, I am unable to find any information of the voting computer system that could have been hacked by the Russians.

Recent reports indicate that Putin is allowing our spies to remain in Russia.

LC

I’ve never claimed they hacked the elections – and the DNC and media who do claim that need to stop being idiots. But they did meddle in our elections. Not by hacking voting machines, but by wielding directed influence via timely releases of legitimate material that made the Democrats look bad.

No disagreement on the fact that it was all accurate information, or that no votes were changed, but it’s still foreign influence on our election process. Something which we should seek to minimize, be it through shady donations, ‘hit pieces’ in media, hacking, etc.

Let’s look at this a different way – suppose there was a video tape of the President-elect doing something bad (racist comments, sex tape, whatever). And the RNC got the only copies of the tapes and put them securely in their headquarters. And then some operatives from France broke in, copied the tapes, and released them to the media jut before the election. What would your reaction be? I’d guess most conservatives would be upset that a foreign power was releasing information, even if true, designed to make one candidate look bad. And most liberals would shrug and say it wasn’t fake, so this is stuff we should know. That’s an off-the-cuff example, in reverse, of what we’re seeing here.

No, nobody hacked election machines. But a foreign power is wielding considerable influence to achieve an objective, and regardless of which side it happens on, we should seek to minimize that. We’ll never eliminate it; the BBC could do a pro-Clinton story and people in the US who watch it would be influenced. We’re not going to sanction the BBC though. But we need to understand and reduce this influence, and that should be bi-partisan.

ex-OS2

Fair enough.

So it is safe to say that Obama is a hypocrite for engaging in similar behavior towards the Israeli elections. The anti-Netanyahu campaign was funded by the State Department.

LC

Oh, everyone does it – the US has a long history of influence, either direct or indirect, in foreign elections. It’s basically up to each country to play defense and stop that as much as possible.

We’re never going to stop it here, either – one can certainly argue that Saudi funds going to the Clinton Foundation were (indirectly) seeking political influence with a suspected Clinton presidency and that’s equally bad, sure. The difference is prior to this case, most foreign efforts targeting the US sought influence with specific politicians, whereas in this case they sought to influence the voters. It’s a new kind of attack and deserves some attention.

All in all, I’d place damn good odds on this operation influencing the election far less than Clinton’s own words when she called a whole bunch of people ‘deplorable’, so it isn’t why she lost or some sort of apocalyptic event,.. but it still deserves attention and vigilance.

Hondo

But they did meddle in our elections. Not by hacking voting machines, but by wielding directed influence via timely releases of legitimate material that made the Democrats look bad.

So, how is that different from what US political parties do during an election campaign? Remember the “National Guard memos” supposedly “found” in 2004 and provided to the press that turned out to have been invented out of whole cloth?

Be careful what you wish for, LC. Political parties and foreign nations look for dirt on their perceived opponents constantly, by pretty much any means available – including outright fabrication and theft. They then make it public whenever and however it suits their interests to do so. The only effective way to prevent that is to muzzle the press worldwide. That in turn implies government control of the media – and thus the end of freedom of the press.

I certainly detest what the US mainstream media has become today: a bunch of transparently partisan shills for any and all “Progressive” (AKA, leftist/socialist/communist) causes who simultaneously lie through their teeth by claiming to be objective and neutral. However, as much as I detest what the press has become today, I wouldn’t suggest doing away with freedom of the press.

11B-Mailclerk

LC,

How is it “new”, or even “newsworthy” that the Russians meddle in our elections? They have been doing this since the 1920’s.

The only really “new” thing here, is that a) the Dems finally acknowledge Russian mischief and b) that maybe this time they -didn’t- acct in support of the Dems.

Thus the Dems are carrying on like “woman scorned”.

But I rather doubt Russia was the primary leaker. I am convinced Obama did it, in his usual petty back-stabbing payback way, to zing one more time the Clintons who were such a pain in his posterior, and his only serious rival for control of the party.

He has a “next” in his plan, probably UN-related, perhaps a try for SecGen. He has neutralized the only folks who might have spoiled his efforts to gain power and prestige on a new stage.

desert

Obozo meddled in Israel’s election too, but his meddling was as productive as everything else the clown has screwed up!!

Club Manager

ex-OS2, I am probably the most knowledgeable about voting equipment and elections that posts here (I’ll spare you the resume), and you are close to being accurate if by “voting computer system” you mean the voting machines. You would be off if you are referring to the voter registration systems each state has on-line and two of those were illegally accessed. However, since NO voting machine or ballot tabulator that I am aware of are connected to the Internet, then they cannot be hacked. Election night results are transmitted via the Internet in many states and I suppose that system can be accessed and results changed. But there is the paper trail and media backup back in each county election commission.

Eden

Club Manager, there are many precincts where there is NO paper trail. You can guess which party has the upper hand in those precincts (and it doesn’t start with R).

PFM

Innocent until proven guilty only applies to Americans – thought we had this same problem with illegal immigrants being covered under the constitution, and look how that turned out. Accusations of Trump wanting to start WW3, and here we have the sitting President poking the bear in the eye based upon…what evidence, again? Oh, right, secret squirrel ultra classified CIA reports that we little people won’t ever be privy to…

LC

There’s actually considerable evidence -not absolutely conclusive, but about as close as you get in cyber ops- that links the DNC attacks to the Russians. If you want some links, I’ll post them – not just the CIA report, but multiple independent non-governmental operations that looked into it. Companies that do this sort of thing and stake their reputations on their conclusions.

Am I 100% certain Russia did it? No, because there are some things that aren’t quite clear, and some contrary data points. But on the whole, those contrary data points are outliers to a large amount of evidence that points directly at Russia.

PFM

With the stakes for stupidity being pretty high, you’d better be damned sure that your ducks are squared away before trying this. Not convinced this is anything other than political grandstanding and a poke in the eye to the incoming administration.

LC

I’ll put the links I posted last time below; these aren’t from the IC, they’re from three independent companies, all reaching the same conclusion – that is, there’s evidence Russia was behind the ‘hacks’.

I think what happened is pretty clear – without an equally sized mountain of evidence for a different scenario, you can’t ignore the one in front of you. Russia was almost certainly behind this. That doesn’t mean that the response to this is not political grandstanding and a poke in the eye to the incoming administration, but that’s a separate discussion. And, honestly, I haven’t read up enough on it yet to have a solid opinion on that. I’m just speaking to what happened, not what we’re doing in response.

Here’s a few links from top-tier cyber-security firms and their analysis. No connection to the government, and staking their reputation on the findings:

gitarcarver

The thing is that there was no hacking of anything. This is one of those cases were words matter. “Hacking” is probing a system looking for and exploiting vulnerabilities. What the DNC got caught in was a “phishing” scheme. They were sent thousands of emails from spoofed domains saying they needed to change passwords, etc. When the DNC did that, they gave others people access to the emails.

It was their own stupidity that caused this.

This is not my assertion, but rather the governments in their report found here: https://www.us-cert.gov/sites/default/files/publications/JAR_16-20296A_GRIZZLY%20STEPPE-2016-1229.pdf

Quote:

In summer 2015, an APT29 spearphishing campaign directed emails containing a malicious link to over 1,000 recipients, including multiple U.S. Government victims. APT29 used legitimate domains, to include domains associated with U.S. organizations and educational institutions, to
host malware and send spearphishing emails. In the course of that campaign, APT29 successfully compromised a U.S. political party. At least one targeted individual activated links to malware hosted on operational infrastructure of opened attachments containing malware. APT29 delivered malware to the political party’s systems, established persistence, escalated privileges, enumerated active directory accounts, and exfiltrated email from several accounts through encrypted connections back through operational infrastructure.

In spring 2016, APT28 compromised the same political party, again via targeted spearphishing. This time, the spearphishing email tricked recipients into changing their passwords through a
fake webmail domain hosted on APT28 operational infrastructure. Using the harvested credentials, APT28 was able to gain access and steal content, likely leading to the exfiltration of information
from multiple senior party members. The U.S. Government assesses that information wasleaked to the press and publicly disclosed. .

The DNC is a private entity – a private “club” if you will. The president of the United States has now come out and instead of defending national interests (such as Israel), tried to retaliate for the actions and the stupidity of that private club.

LC

I agree with what you say regarding ‘hacking’ (or, if you want to be really pedantic, ‘cracking’) vs. phishing… but to be fair, in this case, it seems like a bit of both. The phishing lead to the installation of custom malware, made by hackers. So while the initial access wasn’t granted by using a remote technical exploit, there were still elements of ‘hacking’ involved.

No disagreement whatsoever on the assessment that the DNC is stupid, though.

gitarcarver

LC,

With all due respect the words do matter.

HACKING: to circumvent security and break into (a network, computer, file, etc.), usually with malicious intent

PHISHING: to try to obtain financial or other confidential information from Internet users, typically by sending an email that looks as if it is from a legitimate organization, usually a financial institution, but contains a link to a fake website that replicates the real one.

A real world equivalent would be someone breaking a window or a door to get into your home versus you handing the keys to someone to get into your home.

The Administration is using the term “hacking” because it conveys a certain person and action from the “bad guys.” In fact, what happened was the DNC and Hillary’s staff were stupid. They and they alone gave the keys to the emails away. But that doesn’t fit the image that the DNC and this President wants to convey. They want it to seem as if the Russians were totally responsible for their emails being exposed.

It is a narrative that doesn’t fit the facts, but too many people will go with it.

Words matter.

F’n computer just told me to slow down. I have half a mind to teach it tic-tac-toe.

LC

No disagreement, words do matter – but when it comes to computer issues, the media and countless people worldwide are clueless. ‘Hacking’ is seen as the word of choice, not just by this administration but by damn near everyone, to encapsulate any kind of unauthorized access.

There’s even a generational divide among ‘hackers’ now, where old-school ones who did (actual) hacking called themselves ‘crackers’, but nowadays younger ones just stick with ‘hacker’. But so do ‘script kiddies’ who just use others exploits. Basically, you’re in territory where words are shifting, and the most recognizable word for any sort of computer attack is ‘hack’.

If you’re trying to explain to a non-technical audience what happened, you say ‘hack’. Phishing, especially given the common homonym, just sews confusion. Do you think that grandma Jones has any idea what a ‘phishing’ attack is? Let alone a ‘spear phishing’ one? No, but she probably has heard of hacking.

The goal is to portray that the Russians had unauthorized access. And hacking does that better than phishing.

(Side note: I’d say hacking is the umbrella term. If someone accessed the systems via social engineering, that’s not remote-exploit hacking but they were still illegally accessed and I’d wager ‘hack’ would be the word used. If someone picked up a USB device dropped in a parking lot, and loaded it up even though it had a keylogger, keylogging isn’t remote exploits, but it’d be called a ‘hack’.)

2/17 Air Cav

“Vladimir Putin himself directed the covert cyber attacks against our electoral system, against our democracy, apparently because he has a personal beef against me.”He is determined not only to score a point against me but also undermine our democracy.” H. “Wide Load” Clinton. If that’s not the most pathetic piece of tripe ever served up by a loser, I don’t know what is. The bitch. Hey, if there ever is proof that Vlad ordered or was aware of the Gmail phishing scam that the DNC fell for hook, line, and sinker, I’m going to send him a thank you note for saving our democracy.

gitarcarver

The goal is to portray that the Russians had unauthorized access. And hacking does that better than phishing.

I would disagree. The goal is to say that Russians (as in the Russian government) was behind the release of the email rather than the DNC, the Hillary campaign and the President’s own party owning up to the massive screw up that they themselves caused.

The goal is to blame others for their failure.

As for “grandma” and her understanding of the terms, I would argue that the idea is to play off of that supposed ignorance. The idea is to portray the phishing as some sort of attack on a site or a group. That is not what happened and as such, is a lie.

The more that the President, the DNC and Hillary repeat the lie that this was a hack rather than successfully phishing, the more people will blame others.

THAT’S the real goal here.

Sonny's Mom

And nobody was handling their systems security? That’s Big Gubmint for ya!

Some things to consider:

The russians have sought to influence our elections since the 1920s.

This one time, they may have favored the Republicans, and all of a sudden the dems suddenly cry foul. They have been in bed with the russians so long, they thought thet were married/exclusive. The thought that their Red bunk-Buddies might be getting some “strange” has the donkeys in flat out “scorned woman” rage mode.

The person with means, opportunity, and motive to
leak emails is Barak Hussein Obama, who specializes in back-stab paybacks and petty outbursts. He owns the heads of intel agencies like whiny bitches, so they allude to “russian” meddling. Nope. One of BHO’s minions was the Jackass Judas for HRC.

11b-mailclerk

Does anyone think the NSA monitors email -except- HRCs bootleg domain? Any doubt that the discover couldnt wait to report it to the boss? That no intel folks said, “gee, i wonder what is in it?”

Nah. Backstab Barry would -never- stick one in a Clinton…..

11B-Mailclerk

Lol.

I believe BHO or his minions were the source of the “leak” to wikileaks.

Keep in mind much of the email damage was from court-ordered releases of what were public records illegally withheld or (attempted) destroyed. (Thought we forgot that, eh?)

Significant numbers of lefties have bought the party line that “the Russians interfered” and are pissed that their red-bed-buddies may have switched sides.

No contradiction there.

Communist/Opportunist/whatever-ismist/asshole Putin is irrelevant to the Dems screwing this up all on their own. The Donkey party is simply incapable of acknowledging that they well and truly screwed up by picking HRC as their candidate. They will do or say anything to avoid admitting this, and to avoid contemplating that their Lightbringer Obama (or his close minion) may have been the actual one to have thrown them all under the bus, out of sheer spite for his rival.

Your mockery fails to move me. You haven’t effectively refuted a thing I have proposed. You are usually fairly rational, so why not regroup and try again? Please don’t devolve into the same spluttering of our Zampolit. His stuff is lame and unintersting.

I know they are doing that very thing right now in Europe and causing problems. I am not naive as to what they’re up to, and what they have been up to, since the founding of that sorry socialist republic pooty poot so romantically longs for. Maybe you’re right and this is all just sour grapes on the part of the President, but I honestly don’t think so. Words, words, words! Semantics matter, y’know.

‘Hacking’ means that the damage was done by ‘other’ through forced entry into something that was off-limits all but a certain few.

‘Phishing’ means that the damage was done by someone ‘not other’ who was dumb enough to fall for the stuff that normally goes into my junk e-mail, e.g., ‘you have a Fed Ex message’, ‘your Gmail account password should be changed’, ‘your yahoo mail account…’, ‘you have an unanswered voicemail’, etc, etc, etc. And the damage is YOUR fault because YOU were dumb enough to fall for that crap.

This is something any computer geek wouldn’t fall for, but these know-it-all twerps in the DNC fell for it because arrogance led them around by the nose. If they admit to being that stupid, they also admit that they’re too stupid to run the government, never mind keep their eyes and ears open.

Personally, I wouldn’t let any of them handle the shopping I do for the birds in my neighborhood, because they would get bird food, never mind the brand I buy. They’d get Angry Bird video games and not understand my annoyance at being unable to follow simple instructions.

It’s their own fault, and just like the business with Benghazi, they refuse as a group to take any responsibility for any of it. Expelling diplomats is just another bit of bodaprez’s dimwitted moves, although it’s entirely possible that shrillary called him one last time and screamed bloody murder at him so loud it melted his Blackberry.

It’s their own fault, plain and simple. They can quite the blame game any day now.

That business sanctioning Israel? It’s just one more slap at the Jewish nation. Let’s hope that Trump can mend that fence soon.

IMHO B. Hussein 0bama is acting like a cross between a hissy-fitting toddler and a shitty tenant that knows he’s being evicted while doing all he can to trash everything he possibly could. It would be nice if he just went either to a golf course or on another vacation until January 20, 2017 a date which will be THE END OF AN ERROR.

Joe

We’re rapidly becoming a Russian satrapy. I know a lot of you strong-man worshipping authoritarians are just fine with that. But for those of you who stood against the old USSR, it must seem like you’re living in some kind of bizarro world.

“We’re rapidly becoming a Russian satrapy”

Big word there Joe, you might want to rethink that choice.

Remind me who has been our President for the past 8 years?

UpNorth

Joe saw that word on the board in one of the classrooms he mops and dusts. He thought it looked really kewl, so he decided to use it in a sentence.
He’ll have to go back to the school to find out who the preezy has been for the past 8 years.

ex-OS2

Super-kewl word.

Joe must have forgotten that Obama has been taking it up the ass from Putin for the past 8 years, I guess Obama is a strong-man worshipping authoritarian too.

Maybe “Joe” got the letters from ass-rapey jumbled in his attempt at a faux erudite comment.

Maybe “Joe” is an undergrad protege of Lars the Insecure, maybe a stoodint in some remedial class who thinks he can impress people here on TAH?

Yeah, you mean like the men who fought the Japanese, the Germans, the Italians and, a couple of times, the British. Shame on them (and us) for not hating them to this day. Hey Joe, the Cold war is over. We won that one too. As for satrapy, I never saw that word before. Put it back where you found it, will ya?

11B-Mailclerk

Joseph Strawlin apparently has been drinking the bongwater again.

W2

How, you gave it away with your comment “those of YOU who stood against the USSR”. I am guessing you didn’t. I served during the height of the cold war and I hate the commie ruskie bastards to this day (mostly for interrupting my eating paste and crayons, but that’s a different story). Pooty poot can kiss my red, white and blue USN ass. If you never stood a watch though, kindly STFU.

A Proud Infidel®™

I stand by my post about his being a protege of Lars the Insecure at UC Berserkely.

W2

Yup, spot on API.

For some reason that I don’t care to ponder, a few people here are nostalgic for the bad old days. Aside from that brief foray into Siberia, c/o that Progressive heartthrob, Woody Wilson, we seem to have fought everyone except the damn Russians. I’d like to keep it that way, thanks.

2/17 Air Cav

What was that word, straponsky?

ex-OS2

What Joe should have said was, Obama has made the US an Iranian satrapy.

Does everyone remember “SElected not Elected”?

Having lost to Bush, the dems sought to deligitmize Bush.

Welcome to “Russians Hacked the Election!” Cant allow that they lost. Cant acknowledge a legitimate Republican presidency.

“Heads, Dems win! Tails, CHEATER! CHEATER! YOU CHEATED!”

Childish shitbaggery.

I thought it really showed Al Gore Junior’s true colors when over 10,000 Military Absentee Ballots were the first ones his legal lackeys sued to have disqualified.

So, w/o benefit of evidence and purely for political gamesmanship, The Emperor expelled a few dozen Ruskies. And what did Vlad do in response? He took the upper hand and decided that he would not retaliate. Freakin oBaMa. Stupid bastard. He tried to act tough and Vlad laughed.

Sorta like Obama hooking up with a Victoria Secrets model and jizzy in his pants. Same reaction from the model.
