Steven Jay Perrino; phony sentenced for fraud

| February 21, 2014

Mary and Chief Tango send us links in regards to Steven Jay Perrino, a fifty-eight year old in Hampton, VA who was sentenced to 61 months in prison and repayment of $120,000 that he stole from the government. From the US Attorney’s Office;

On September 4, 2013, after Diplomatic Security investigative analysts discovered possible fraudulent passport applications, DS special agents, in conjunction with the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Office of the Inspector General, U.S. Postal Inspector’s Office, and the Hampton and Virginia Beach Police Departments executed search and arrest warrants, which resulted in Perrino’s arrest. On November 20, 2013, Perrino pled guilty to one count of theft of government money and one count of aggravated identity theft. According to court documents, Perrino assumed the identities of at least 5 different individuals dating back to 1986. Perrino was able to assume these identities by obtaining personal information and associated documents and then using that information to apply for official forms of identification such as United States passports and driver’s licenses. Perrino also enlisted in the Navy and Army under stolen identities. Following a 10-year fraudulent enlistment in the Army, Perrino applied for and received VA benefits in that person’s name. He was able to obtain more than $138,000 in benefits via the Montgomery and Post 9/11 GI Bills and federal student loans and grants.

So, he did serve ten years, just not under his own name. That was reasonably stupid.

I am surprised the VA IG did anything at all.

A fucking useless organization.

10 year enlistment? That is commitment to the job at least – Does this make these guys better than the stolen valor guys?!?!

Toasty Coastie

Just great…Hope Bubba has a nice pickle for him.

Beretverde

@2…he got a “two fer one” sentence. 10 years, go to prison for 5!

wink windsor

I predict he will never serve a full sentence and will never pay a full $120,000.
Our justice system is a revolving door and a joke.

Thunderstixx

WTF… Enlist under another man’s name and then stick around for 10 years ???

That makes no sense, he is either a really stupid SOB or an egomaniac !!!

Beretverde

@5…yes he will. Fed system up to 14 days a year credited for good time. The money will be garnished.

Veritas Omnia Vincit

That dude was dedicated to that identity theft, steal a name and serve 10 years in the Army to defraud the VA?????

If he had been that dedicated to a legal application of talent he would have earned those benefits…what the hell?

Ex-PH2

Speechless. WTF?

Do we know the name he used when enlisted (and dates)? We had some guy in our unit way back in the day who always seemed suspicious of identity theft. He constantly bragged about how it easy it was to do – as if it was his hobby (and I do remember him having cutting boards and x-acto knifes when we conducted barrack room inspections but never any passport materials or images. Just curious to know if it is the same guy….

Kind of weird. I could actually almost sympathize with the guy if he did 10 honorable years of service under another name. He actually would rate those benifits for his service. It looks like his ass-hattery ran much deeper than just trying to get an ID to enlist though.
