How an Army Helmet became emblematic of the World Champion Red Sox
Look, my blog, my rules.
OK, maybe not entirely, but once or twice (if Tom Brady can find a receiver) a year I get to brag about the greatest city in the history of mankind: Boston. I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but whatever city you are from (if not Boston) will always vie for a second place finish. So allow me my day. (Even you Yankees fans.)
Even today I heard Mike and Mike on ESPN wondering why one of our bearded champions, Johnny Gomes wears an Army helmet for the celebrations. It’s actually a nice military-related story.
From the US Army:
NATICK, Mass. (Oct. 24, 2013) — On a late June day at Fenway Park in Boston, Master Sgt. Miguel Chacon was looking on with great pleasure as Red Sox players signed autographs for his three children and dozens of others when he felt something hit him on the side.
Chacon, in uniform, looked down to see a pair of batting gloves, which he assumed that some fan had tossed down to be signed. A moment later, an usher tapped Chacon on the shoulder and told him that it was Red Sox outfielder Jonny Gomes, known for his unwavering support of the U.S. military, who had thrown them over.
Later, he was able to thank Gomes personally for the unsolicited gesture, but Chacon wanted to do more.
So when Lee Cummings, who works at the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine at Natick Soldier Systems Center, offered him tickets to the Sept. 15 Red Sox-Yankees game at Fenway, Chacon, the USARIEM senior enlisted advisor, brought along the Advanced Combat Helmet that he had worn in Iraq and a bag of “recruiting goodies.”On a pre-game tour of Fenway, Chacon showed the helmet to a club official and told her that he had brought it for Gomes. She escorted Chacon and fellow USARIEM Soldier Spc. Travis Crook below the stands and to a door outside the Red Sox clubhouse.
“About three minutes later, here comes Jonny Gomes through the door!” Chacon said. “I reached into the bag and I said, ‘This is the helmet that I had in combat.'” Chacon told Gomes that he wanted him to have it.
“Are you serious? This is cool. This rocks,” Chacon recalled Gomes saying. “He was just taken by that helmet,” Chacon said. “He loved it. He lit up.”
As they talked, Gomes pulled down his right sock to reveal a tattoo that stretches from his knee to his ankle. The tattoo includes an American flag, the Statue of Liberty, and a target with the date Osama bin Laden was killed.
“I’ve met some players,” said Chacon, “but I’ve never met a player as patriotic as Jonny. Never.”The helmet — with Chacon’s rank, roster number, blood type, an American flag and a Special Forces sticker on the outside — has become as much a celebratory icon as the beards worn by the Red Sox, now facing the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series. Chacon didn’t part with it lightly.
“Things that I’ve taken to combat and back, they have a lot of value to me,” said Chacon, who has set aside the gear for his children to one day give to theirs. “This is the stuff that dad went to war with. I wanted to give a piece of the battlefield back to Jonny.”
Chacon’s helmet couldn’t have found a better home than Gomes’ locker.
“It’s an honor to see him wear that,” said Chacon, adding that Gomes, in turn, “honors the military. That’s bigger than anything. I’m glad it’s getting them through the battle that they’re battling through right now to win the World Series.”
I’m headed to Tulsa on Saturday, but I’d rather be lining up to watch the Sox on the Duck Boats and hear a little Dropkick Murphys!

Brady’s killing my fantasy football team.
There is no such thing as too much talk of the Red Sox today! great story!!
Great story. So are you saying the Red Sox won the World Series? I’m just throwing out a guess on my part, since I didn’t pay attention to it this year.
Bahston – “greatest city in the history of mankind?” The city that brought us the “Big Dig” fiasco and that wonderful example of sanity called “Haarvahd?” GMAFB. I’ve been to Boston – once. Once was enough.
Congrats on the World Series title, TSO, but don’t use it as an excuse to go ridiculously overboard. (smile)
Sadly, yes…. despite being from the actual greatest city in the country, the Cards just did not play as well. Pedroia apparently grew 30 foot arms and St. Louis just didn’t have either the pitching or the bats. Despite being married to a terminally obnoxious Red Sox fan (OK, that’s redundant) I have to concede that over the Series, they just plain hit better than we did. I don’t mind losing once in a while… I just hate being the go-to team when Boston is trying to snap a streak.
I’m just sayin, my boys in DKM provide a morale boost for every Boston team ever. Hats off to Ken Casey and Scruffy Wallace, plus Jeff DaRosa. And who that guy is with the deep voice, no fucking clue. He’s not from the Murphys, this much I know.
Fun DKM fact: Scruffy (bagpipes) and Al Barr (singer) both wear Ranger shirts on stage, and DKM is involved in the ‘Claddagh Fund’ charity, which, among other things, gives to veteran charities in the Boston area.

Special Forces sticker? Hate to be a stickler, but that’s no SF combat patch and I don’t see any wings, etc above the left breast pocket. Just saying!
Since the Red Sux took out my Tigers, no love here. But I’ll tip my hat to Jonny Gomes.
Ok I’ll give you one day. One.
But that is a pretty cool story.
Don’t care where I am or who sings it, that song always brings a tear to my eye and joy to my heart.
Don’t much care for pro ball, at all, but I’m glad the Sox won.
And what’s noo ta love aboot thae Murphy’s?
@5 David, at least we did not sweep you this time.
Also in BoSox favor- their catcher wore a Sgt Bergdahl POW bracelet during the series, it was reported.
If anyone has tentacles into the BoSox org, the family would like to thank ’em…
@12 – thank God for that. I suppose this is karmic payback for all the Series the Sox lost to the Cards during their long dry spell.
Now you want to talk about a REAL long drought…. Cubbies haven’t won in almost 110 years. 1908 was it? And they were the team Boston beat in 1918.
It was a wonderful & stressful series and I couldn’t be happier! 🙂
What was eerie to me is that my dad was born the same year as the last World series win in Fenway: 1918. He’s still around, too. Gonna be 95 in December. Former Navy Corpsman in WWII in the Pacific.
The other nice thing is that my Brother-in-Law is a die-hard Cards fan. I’m sending him a BoSox ball cap for Christmas.
Sox? The White Sox won the World Series again? Why didn’t someone tell me? I never watch baseball.
Yeah, one day, one time. Enjoy.
@15. You’re a lucky man.
AW1 Tim: 2/17 Air Cav is right. Treasure the time you can spend with him.
Please also tell the guy an old soldier – whose dad and uncle he just might have served with, since both were Navy during World War II before my father “saw the light” after the war and joined the Army Air Forces just before or as it was transitioning to the USAF – sends his best. And says thanks. (smile)
Jury is out on this one… the special forces sticker…
@ AW1. Agreed. I wish my dad could have been there last night. Me and my son, two freckled faced dumbasses just watching a great game. Dads are good!
“So allow me my day. (Even you Yankees fans.)”
3 hrs, 16 mins to go.
Don’t think he’s SF. The FB page for the USARIEM Senior Enlisted Advisor Change of Responsibility shows him without the long tab:
https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.624284514256456.1073741830.178584842159761&type=1
Of course, he’s not actually claiming anywhere that he’s SF. He just put the sticker on the helmet. Note that he had a bag of “recruiting goodies” mentioned in the article. That could have been among them.
Great story and it’s nice to see professional athletes support the military. Back in the 90’s the Phoenix Suns (Charles Barkley and company) let some of the local recruiters in the locker room after home wins. Good stuff.
The Bruins had a Multi cam jersey so maybe somebody ought to send the Pats something. In any case my wife is from MO so I couldn’t really enjoy this one as I should have. I had to keep the yelling to a minimum. Now that the civil war is over and we won I can get back to Mr.Perfect..Thomas Patrick Brady and my beloved Pats.
Okay, TSO, you had your day–and then some. First, Boston sucks. But, hey, don’t take my word for it. Get yourself a copy of “Another Bullshit Night in Suck City: A Memoir.” Second, those beards are reminiscent only of the guys on the cough drop box, except the guys on the box look dignified, not silly. Third, all of those one-year contracts for Manny, Moe, and Jack certainly paid off for the gang. Nice player development there, I must say. And Big Popeye I’ll give you. He had an outstanding post season and Series. At 37, I’m absolutely convinced he does not take any substance that he ought not–even if hje couldn’t bring himself to issue a denial when the question arose. Lastly, did I mention Boston sucks? Where else can one spend over two hours traveling four miles by car?
2/17 Air Cav: NYC, DC, LA, SF, and (probably) Chicago and Philly. And I’ll pass on them for anything other than a visit or business trip, too.
Okay, I’m good with the Bruins because a kid I played hockey with from my home town won a Stanley Cup with them. I grew up down the road from U of M so I always pull for Tom Brady. But the Sox? No love here! BTW, a begrudging congrats to the Sox.
@28. Hondo: I don’t consider SF or DC to be part of the United States at all. LA is only partly in the US and DC and NY drives allow one to sightsee. Boston? Nothing to see but the guy in front who speeds up to close a 20 foot gap and the guy behind you that will sooner than not be playing tag with your bumper.
@29. Yeah, the Bruins were okay because they were nearly all from Canadia. Bobby Orr was great and also from Canadia. Boston sucks. And don’t even mention the Celtics (pro. Sell Tix).
Wow, I wish I could have kept my government issue helmet from Iraq. I had to turn mine in or pay hundreds of dollars.
…not unlike the player of the game ACU jacket the Bs award every game. Too bad it didnt help them against my Blackhawks!
And I love the Murphys, but that was not a great version of the Anthem, imho…
