The screen door on a submarine
Has anyone seen a more embarrassing Senate hearing than the one we watched last week as Chuck Hagle did his best imitation of a doddering old fool? If that wasn’t proof that the ill-prepared ex-Senator is being nominated because he’s just going to be an executioner for this administration’s defense policy then nothing will ever prove that. If any Republicans confirm him, they need to start packing up their offices. There’s a difference between bi-partisanship and condemning our troops to the leadership that Chuck Hagle won’t bring to the Defense Department.
Even Jennifer Rubin at the Washington Post thinks that Hagle should be sent back into his retirement;
It is precisely for this reason that the burden falls on Republicans to rescue the country, and I use that term deliberately. If Hagel had been nominated by President George W. Bush, not a single Democrat would vote for him and he would be scorned by the mainstream media as a dim, inappropriate candidate; they know as do Republicans that he is unfit for a serious job and the absence of a capable and competent defense secretary places the nation’s national security in jeopardy. No president who cared about the Pentagon or wanted the best and the brightest would have picked him. However, Obama did — so draw your own conclusions. And unless one party stands up to him and the Democrats, Hagel will be confirmed on a near straight party-line vote.
Of course, in a link sent to us by ROS from Time Magazine, they think that Hagle earned his third Purple Heart last week;
While many in the national-security community have endorsed Hagel’s nomination, some GOP lawmakers have argued that he is too soft on Iran, anti-Israel, and too eager to cut the U.S. nuclear arsenal. Hagel denied the charges, but he did stumble, and many of his answers seemed tentative. He said, most notably, that the Obama Administration endorses “containment” of Iran’s nuclear ambitions, when it actually embraces “prevention.”
The consensus among congressional aides late Thursday was that Hagel will likely win committee support, largely along party lines, and also ultimately confirmation from the full Senate. But their mood was less certain late Thursday than it was on Wednesday.
Anyone who cares even a little bit about our defense will not vote for this idiot. Like I’ve said before, Hagle stepped up for paratroopers and pushed National Airborne Day through the Senate for us, but calling the surge a military blunder was undermining our efforts there. And did I mention that VoteVets likes him?

I’ve already called Senator Ayotte’s office asking her not to vote for confirmation if it comes to a vote. I won’t bother wasting my time calling Senator Shaheen.
That scene in “Ice Age” with the dodos keeps coming up in front of me.
I keept telling myself I’ll wake up from this nap and everything will be like it was when Reagan was in office. Things made more sense then, somehow.
I’ve wasted my time calling the fake indian and the office of the soon to be secstate to voice my disapproval last week as I am certain I know their votes, but I did make the call to tell them Hagle is not appropriate to the task at hand.
Of course I am also thinking of calling Kerry’s office and mentioning he should vote against himself as secstate because he’s not fit for that office either….so I am not sure how seriously they will take my concerns.
It’s amazing that of all the dems available Kerry is the one they chose for state, I guess the only upside is Mass will lose the senior senator. It doesn’t mean that we will elect anyone else of value however.
This bit of news showed up this morning:
http://worldnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/02/04/16834867-show-of-force-us-south-korea-hold-naval-drills-amid-norths-nuclear-threats?lite
I don’t judge the accuracy of NBC’s reference to nuclear tests and the possibility that they may use enriched uranium. However, I will be waiting to see who does get the SecDef seat.
I’ve “corresponded” with Hagen (Dim-NC) for the last week. She might be vulnerable since she is up next year. Of course, that didn’t stop her for voting for John F’ing Kerry.
Probably the worst high cabinet confirmation hearing in a long long time…worse than Sen. John Tower’s 1989 hearing for SECDEF. Bad as it was, Hagel will get the votes. Listened to a few key Republicans and they seem reluctant to spend political capital on this…not a lifetime appointment – SECDEF leaves when President’s term ends. The GOP want to conserve capital for the debt ceiling, taxes, immigration, gun debate etc…
There has been concern for awhile about Hagel. He has no experience administering a large bureaucracy in private industry or gov’t…the DoD is is the biggest, most complex bureaucracy on earth. Maybe Obumbles just wants a figurehead at the Pentagon who won’t push back (like Panetta did w/ defense cuts)…let Deputy Secy of Def Ashton Carter and CJCS Gen Dempsey do the actual job of running/ruining the DoD….Chuck gets in though minus a few Republican votes.
‘Maybe Obumbles just wants a figurehead at the Pentagon who won’t push back’ — I agree with that assessment.
Our vote-the-party-line Senator Mark Udall already voiced his support of Hagel. I’m sure the other one, Michael Bennet, will do the same.
I’d hope for better senators next time around, but I fear Colorado is too far into the blue now for that to happen. Not to mention that our Republican Party has a knack for supporting bad candidates that implode right when it’s too late to find someone else.
Chuck made Joe Biden look and sound like the president of Mensa
It’s Obama’s call, his pick and when Hagle shows he is an incompetent idiot he will go the way Hillary did.
All Hagle is there for is to take the fall when the real Secretary of Defense screws the pooch.
Every American will see that the Obama administration is full of incompetent assholes led by an incompetent POTUS.
In the liberal democrats world, ideology trumps common sense.
What difference does it make if people die?
Favorite quote: “A long-time Capitol Hill Democrat astounded by the hearing tells me, ‘It is very clear from the testimony that Sen. Hagel will not be bringing the potato salad to the next Mensa picnic.'”
